interesting.... been a lifelong fan and disciple of his.... the term muddy is one that is not really attributed to him. Try punchy and bright... I play the same model Rick as him... same strings... and trust me.. the sound is not muddy... at least to these ears now for muddy... try Jack Bruce

Mabe not the best bassist ever, but he is perfect for the band. If you put any of the "prog greats" in his spot, they would stick out like a sore thumb as they tried to solo over the top of the band and would ruin the trance-like mood.

I used to love the sound of Chancelors bass, now I'm not too sure if I like the whole trebely, thrashy bass. Still one of my favirote bands.

I think that Justin is an amazing bassist not because he is technical, but because he writes awesome lines. Technicality is not a prerequisite for awesomeness.

He is my favorite person in the band, but that might not be saying much. I think they are pretty cool lines.

While I do agree that he is wholly nothing fantastic...he's written some good lines for the band here and there albeit 90% in D minor...not, and nor are Tool really, a very varied output.

I saw Tool in Columbus a few weeks ago, and apart from the spectacle of the show itself, it was Justin's bass playing that really impressed me. He makes a lot of different sounds with the bass and I don't think he ever repeats himself as far as a particular sound throughout different songs.

I think Justin is a very underated player.Ok maybe 10000 Days isn't to everyones taste but to me JC's bass is the highlight on that album. Can't wait to see Tool live again.

His lines are good. Technically he's not that great though.

Geddy Lee & John Myung are really able and talented musicians. The fact that I prefer bassists (on the metal scene) like Martin Lopez and Justin Chancellor maybe lies to the fact that I prefer Anathema over Spastic Ink .

If I had to choose between DT and Tool, I'd actually go for DT because at least I could admire the virtuoso playing. Lateratus is THE most overrated album in the top 100 IMO. To see it above masterpieces like Mirage, In the Land of Grey and Pink and Meddle actually makes me laugh, it's so ridiculous.

His sound is an integral part of the TOOL sound...dark and moody. He is a great bass player!

Other than the fantastic riff on Schism I have not noticed him. This does not mean he is no good, his playing does not jump out at me.
