by no means at all is adam jones of tool extrememly skilled. He, however, sits opposite of petrucci in the regard that his song writing and note placement and riffage in general is just so much more  . . . full. complete, as if every note works towards the end of the song itself, not just that particular section or solo.

Best metal guitarist? no. maybe the best musician (of the list) but not guitarist.

What are we using as a measurement here? Influence? Technicality? Songwriting ability?
 
Most influential would be Blackmore.
Technicality probably goes to Petrucci. (I'm not a huge fan of DT, but I must admit they are all rediculously good at playing their instruments)
I'd give songwriting to Akerfeldt.

I like adam jones. He is a real perfectionist, and is very creative. Petrucci? Ok, he lacks soul. Like, take his fan favorite, the solo on under a glass moon. He convulses between emotions so much, he seems schizophrenic. You know he's not feeling every single emotion in that solo, that'd be impossible. Now robert fripp, is he really a prog metal guitarist? I'm sorry, but no, he isn't. Otherwise he'd win handily. Hmm, fredrik thorendel. He is amazing. I could definitly go with him, even over adam jones. He has enormous talent, and equally enormous creativity. Schuldiner? Maybe, but I still like fredrik better. Now, paul masvidal, from cynic, is probably just as skilled as petrucci. He seems to have a bit more emotion, and I love his neckless guitar. I guess I have to go with Fredrik Thorendal, but it is close for sure.

Not Flashy, very subtle... he is the creator of post metal guitar playing, and Tool is not even a post metal band. Excellent guitar player, he gets my vote.

The chap from Behold...the Arctopus. I can never remember his name. Paul Misvada from Cynic is a runner-up.

Petrucci is always a candidate...it's undeniable how great the man is. What really seperates him from the rest is the picking precision...it comes out so natural and he should mess up more. Each one is tasteful besides the new stuff, he's a great player.

Adam Jones is not so great. To me, anyone that has a good sense of pitch can pick up the guitar and hit the right notes that are fitting to a song. His licks also get more rehashed then any other guitarist.

Petrucci. He's amazing and can combine perfectly technique and feeling. Despite what meny people say, he has a lot of feeling to my ears. And I'm serious, take for example the solo on Trial Of Tears, man, that's orgasmic! He has very few "playing fast to play fast" moments, IMO, to be pointed as a soulless guitarist. One of the best guitarist from the 90s, or at least, the most enjoyable to my ears from that period. Clap

The second place is for Michael Romeo, great technique and neo classical passages. He's more power metal, but definitely more versatile than your typical power metal guitarist (he uses modes a lot, and, well, odd times, etc). And he has great feeling and fits so good dueling with the keys. Thumbs%20Up

I was suprised when I heard Aeon Spoke and then watched the reunion show. I had the impression he turned gay.
