So, if I have an undefined taste and like Rap, Hip Hop, Disco, Trance, Raeggeton and Boys/Girls bands I'm less open minded than if i like Prog specially, but listen other genres ocassionally?
Absurd.

This is an interesting point which I have often thought about. The more genres someone listens to the more likely some people could assume that the person has an "undefined" taste. Of course this is wrong ... it might be undefined, it might be carefully chosen, there's no way to tell just from the list of genres.

If you think about it, this is kind of flawed. I mean, somebody could only listen to really popular bands that are from totally different genres, like 50 cent, the beatles, RHCP, linkin park, rammstein, etc. requiring little open-mindedness as compared to somebody who specializes in an unpopular genre, for example avant jazz.
|
I don't think that someone who specializes in any particular genre could be called open minded. Popular or unpopular ... doesn't matter IMO, the more narrow your bandwidth of acceptable styles is, the more narrow/closed minded you are IMO.
And don't you think that Avant Jazz is any better than Rap!
|
Well, as many things, what qualifies one as being open-minded is truly subjective and varies based on how one defines open-mindedness. These charts reflect a user's palette of musical genres, but if you consider open-minded to be the dictionary.com definition of "having or showing a mind receptive to new ideas or arguments," then open-mindness is how unique or unconventional one's tastes are. Regardless, the statistics are an interesting way to see music habits by genre breakdown, but I just don't entirely agree with the open/closed minded graph.

I'm pretty sure I'd like something in virtually any genre, it's just that I have a preference to certain styles and sticking to them yields a higher percentage chance of me really loving the album. I do like to experiment with genres and mix it up as much as possible, but I could never go into a store and buy a random rap album just for the sake of being 100% open minded, because chances are I won't enjoy it even if there is some rap I do like.

Well then it's not wrong Mike, not necesarilly correct will be more accurate.
I still believe that the averahge listener has an undefioned taste and listens whatever is popular.

^ So do I have a undefined taste simply because I just listened to The Eagles, King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, Secret Chiefs 3 and Le Orme?

Of course not, neither dio I for just listening Cat Stevens, Mercedes Sosa and Cranberries, but we are not the average listener that buys what their favorite DJ tells them to buy and listen.
We don't care of popularity, we know what we like, we may have a versatile taste, but lets admit it, not all the people is like us, we're not better, not worst, only more obsessed and different.

^ I just said it was wrong to tell from a diverse playlist that the person has an undefined taste. Still don't understand why you want to replace "wrong" with "not necessarily correct" here. The deduction is simply not valid. You can't tell from the playlist why the person chose these particular albums - could be random, could be very carefully chosen. Uh ... what was the subject again?

I seriously think all of this is utter bullsh*t. Being "open minded" doesn't mean you have to hear a small percentage of every genre known to man and not specialized into a genre. On the contrary, being "narrow minded" is not the same as listening a lot of your favorite genre and just a little of others.
I'd say being "open minded" is just allowing yourself to listen to any kind of music before giving an opinion on it instead of dismissing ir beforehand. Narrow minded would be the person who is presented with a new style of music and says "I don't need that, I have my prog (or jazz or whatever)".
So the person that listens 70% of prog and 30% of everything else is narrow minded...Because that stupid "chart" only takes anglo-european genres into considerations (and not even all of them)... where are all the other genres?
How many of you wise masters of prog have heard latin music? Oh, you're all so narrow minded!
No, you're not. You just haven't had the exposure.
But if you think this stupid chart says anything, well, congratulations...
... for allowing stupid internet devices tell you who you are.

^^^^ Don't take this too seriously Teo. It's just a silly chart and I don't think any of us is taking this seriously.

... for allowing stupid internet devices tell you who you are. | That's my definition as well.I already said this in some other thread, but open-mindedness has more to do with being honest with yourself and giving the artists/genres you happen to encounter during your lifetime an honest chance to impress you than it has about actually enjoying them. Imho, of course. Sorry about the awkward sentence, I hope I got my point across. As chamberry said though, these charts are just for fun, not to be taken too literally/seriously. I don't think open-mindedness can be calculated in any way.

I actually like this service ... and please don't take it so seriously, they have to work with the data which last.fm provides, and that's the tags which the user create.

I'm pretty sure of the Elephant 6 bands I've only listened to Olivia Tremor Control consistently, and since I own everything they've released on CD now it's unlikely to get listened to on my computer again As for power pop, I have no idea what's coming up as that. Ohh... Teenage Fanclub? Maybe I shouldn't admit to that
