Meshuggah! They are the undisputed kings of math metal. Their drummer is a god, and their guitarist is pretty great too. However, take fair warning. To apprectiate them fully takes a great understanding of rhythm. Otherwise, chances are you will hate them.

Cynic is great, but don't be boring and just get focus, check out their demos too! You can see a progression from death metal to whatever the heck they became (let's just call it progressive)

Of course, you should have already checked out thrak by king crimson.

For something accessible (but amazing), check out kamelot.

Progmetal bands I like:

Dream Theater
Tool
Opeth
Mastodon
Fates Warning
Symphony X (people say they're power metal but they're far more progressive than any power metal band I know of)
Ayreon
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (Avant/RIO metal)
Pain of Salvation (I only have TPE1 which I haven't listened to in a while, it's pretty good....Scarsick is just painful to me though)
Porcupine Tree post Stupid Dream-era

lol@ past me

I still agree with all of these Tongue but I like PoS more because I own Be now....now to add to that list:

maudlin of the Well- Gleam in Ranks=crack

Cynic- strange case band, sometimes I hate them, sometimes I love them...it's really weird

Devin Townsend- holy a;lsdjf;saldjf;lsjdk this stuff is good...Ziltoid is a masterpiece on several levels

Between the Buried and Me- came out of left field for me, though Colors is the only entire album I like by them....select tracks from Alaska (Backwards Marathon, Selkies, etc.) and Mordecai from The Silent Circus are the few non-Colors tracks I like

Behold...the Arctopus- They will eat your mind with music

Boris- ok not prog at all but still rocksome

Blind Guardian- don't know if prog, don't care

Buckethead- this guy needs to be in progressive metal already, I don't care how all over the place his stuff is, just put him SOMEWHERE

UneXpect- only like their latest (their debut sounded a tad generic to me) but can't wait to see these guys (hopefully) next month!Tongue

1.- Dream Theater
2.- Opeth
3.- Pain of Salvation
4.-Katatonia
5.- Tool
6.- Death
7.- Andromeda
8.-Between the Buried and Me
9.-Ayreon
10.- Unexpect

Special Mention is deserved by Ayreon, and it's "Human Equation", which I think is the most significative, enjoyable, diverse and creative prog metal album ever!

Isis, Tool, and *shels are all up there for me. All atmosheric and slightley depressing.

All post metal is great, and definately against the grind, so if you dont like tech or classic metal, you like post! Or you're hopeless.

Well, I don't know how you're defining "casual" here (I guess I could be a casual fan of metal, as I don't listen to or like much outside of prog metal), but I don't find Lamb of God the least bit accessible.  Their music is way too heavy for my taste, I don't like their lyrics, and their singer sounds awful (this is all just my opinion).  And the reason I'm familiar with them is because my brother likes them a lot.

yeh i guess that was worded poorly...when I think of really difficult metal to listen to, stuff like Nile comes to mind...I hate the whole screaming instead of singing bit, but I think Lamb of God has more to offer than most metal bands I've heard in terms of composition of their songs. there are certain songs that I can't listen to at all but I do enjoy some of their stuff and they put on a great live show minus their alcoholic singer

Which song was it? From what I've heard, their oldest stuff("Remission" etc.) is a lot harder/"uglier" than their newer stuff("Leviathan", "Blood Mountain"). I dare say they're perhaps the best prog metal band nowadays. Blood Mountain is nothing short of a masterpiece.

If you're looking for darker, heavier stuff new Tool and any Opeth kicks ass. New Dream Theater is more metal too than the older stuff in my opinion and rocks hard.
Meshuggah can hit the spot too although occasionally they're a bit much for me to take.
Not sure if they're PROG metal but Lamb of God kick serious ass as well and are relatively accessible for casual metal fans. I used to be into Mastodon despite the brutalizing vocals but after seeing them botch live I've lost a certain amount of interest.
