^ why predictable? Especially in live situations he always introduces little variations.

Yes, I'm sure that's true and he really is a fantastic player, but after awhile one wants to hear something from inside a musician-- even technical players like Satriani, EVH, Randy Rhoads and Eric Johnson brought something uniquely special to their instrument.. I don't hear that so much in John Petrucci. I happen to love LTE, but I love the band more than the members. |

Petrucci has his set of trademarks ... but I know what you mean, they're not as "flashy" as EVH's dive bombs.

I must say in some way i agree, he's skills can't be denied but in the latter work some times feeling is missing i must mention, not for the skill or spedd, but for the "taste" and feeling of his solos, Brendt Allman

nobody has ever asked him about that... so who knows.... until I hear some denial, I won't say this is impossible...

I love John Petrucci and he's been nominated so many times here so I thought I'd nominate someone deserving to be here.
The alien himself....Steve Vai. |
he isn't God either ...in fact, he's so skilled and perfect that his playimg becomes mundane and predictable.
from the AR Team leaders! We knew we were doing the right thing when we invited you to join the team.... *they both run for cover from the wrath of Petrucci lovers everywhere* Seriously, I want to endorse what Zappa88 wrote earlier. Without the Man in Black, Mr Blackmore himself, many of those people you mention would've never picked up a guitar.. He may be not as technical as the Petrucci and Romeos of this world, but he's been hugely influential throughout the years - and his playing is so very full of emotion and beauty. |

indeed. When you hear Petrucci playing, you know, without a doubt, that it's Petrucci playing and noone else. Even though he's not that "flashy" |

I don't rate petrucci as a guitarist, if the music isn't good then the musician isn't good in my opinion, I mean you'd think with all the musical tools at his disposal if he had any bit of creativity he'd come up with some awesome riffs and music.
Don't get offended it's just my opinion though. |

I think I could mention Arjen Lucassen, due to his overall talent he's underrated as a great guitar player.
I like also double guitar Petrucci-like solos of Shadow Gallery guys (Allman and Wehrkamp) and of guys of Evergrey. |

Petrucci is all technique and speed and very little feeling. I would rather listen to David Gilmour, Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett, etc... and many other than Petrucci. Dream Theater would be better off with some guest spots from other guitarists the way Porcupine tree has done. Not that I rate Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree as a top notch lead guitarist eithier although he is a first rate songwriter.

Are you implying that Petrucci's skill or creativity doesn't make him good enough to be a guitarist? Because that doesn't make sense to me. Your opinion doesn't offend me by the way. Edited by darkmatter - May 04 2007 at 23:03 |

Chuck Schuldiner for his amazing technicality, his unique tone and style, and his soul crushing heavyness.
Mikael Arkerfeldt for his versatility in blending soft acoustic passages, death metal mayhem and Gilmour-esque blusy soloing
