Well Angelo, I often disagree with the teams about the categories so I have stopped to discuss this with them in order to keep my motivation and avoid mounting frustrations
 But I am curious to Dial because of your post, Heavy Prog and Prog Metal really differ. I have met Martien Koolen during the Background Magazine Annual Parties (prog and beer  ) but I don't know Liselotte. By the way, it remarkable how many female singers Prog Metal and Gothic deliver!

Even more amazing how many of these singers and bands detest being called Gothic  Did you also notice that quite a few of them are Dutch (Liselotte Hegt, Anneke van Giersbergen, Sharon den Adel, Simone Simons, ....) |

A few years ago I witnessed a gig by the very interesting Dutch band Aemen in De Boerderij, to my pleasant surprise Sharon Den Adel was their guest singer, what a voice and ...... well, the rest I leave to your imagination .......................
!
And indeed, more and more we Dutch rule here on Prog Archives

Another Dutch post sorry...Last sunday i was at a rehearsal of new Dutch progband 5 Bridges.Antennas already knew the bassplayer of the band and finally convinced me to
come along. I'm always somewhat skeptical if someone tells me he/she's playing in a band but these guys are way beyond amateurism. They played some 2 hours of their own repertoire which is characterized by a thick symphonic sound somewhere between Genesis (Vocals) and Yes (instrumental playing). Then we were served a mix of Genesis and Yes songs ( the latter much to the dismay of the vocalist who wondered how on earth it was possible for someone to sing that high). Afterwards i talked for a while with the Keyboard player (Luke d'Araceno maybe well known to some of you as a reviewer on Gnosis) who explained the difference between the various keyboards for me, not only did he tell me which board he'd use for Rick Wakeman's Handel improvs from Excerpts, he also immediately played them, marvellous. The afternoon was concluded with listening to some new ideas from the guitar player which were subsequently discussed by the other members of the band. I really enjoyed myself that afternoon i hope (and expect) they'll hit the stages in the Netherlands soon. I'll be there for sure. |

Good story Dirk and the 5 Bridges demo-CD I got from Antennas is very pleasant symphonic prog, indeed with hints from Genesis and Yes. I hope it will lead to an official release, they deserve it, another promising new Dutch progrock band

Well Norbert, I remember that I listened to Riverside ffor the first time a few years ago, I was blown away from the very first second, so dynamic and emotional, good vocals and exciting work on keyboards and guitar, the best Heavy Prog I have heard since Ayreon
Still 7 hours to go ....
By the way, if Periferic Records can't help you with Riverside albums,
I have one alternative for you

I'd like to introduce you to the unique Krautrock band Coupla Prog from Germany
Their complete material was recorded at a radio station and finally released 30 years later! Very interesting - the songs are live played, pure, without any reworking and overdubbing. Very hammond drenched songs.  The band worked out the rock opera Edmundo Lopez provided with a gripping story. For more informations read the biography or my review |

Angelo, what a pity you missed Riverside, they did very well, the crowd freaked out, the band loved the Dutch audience and they came back two times for encores

1. Dioscuros (The Genesis) : a very alternating piece with spectacular work on keyboards (from a soaring choir-Mellotron sound to a flashy synthesizer solo and powrful organ runs), ‘angelic’ Spanish female vocals and fiery guitar runs, it sounds very dynamic and exciting!
2. Letargia (The Flight) : after the sound of the sea and birds, the atmosphere is first mellow with thin vocals and tender piano and then more hypnotizing with a slow rhtyhm delivering twanging guitar and a choir-Mellotron sound, a majestic piece of music that contrasts perfectly with the previous song.
3. Semjases (The Encounter) : this is also a very alternating track, from dreamy with wonderful female vocals to mid-tempo featuring propulsive guitar/drums and flashy synthesizer flights and a compelling final part with the focus on sensitive and fiery guitar work, very moving!
4. Ocelos (The Future) : this is their ‘magnum opus’ (at about 11 minutes) with lots of flowing shifting moods, sensational work on keyboards and guitar and a splendid bombastic final part with awesome interplay between sparkling piano, propulsive and fiery guitarplay, beautiful, often thin female vocals, an adventurous rhtyhm-section and spectacular synthesizer runs, symphonic prog at its best!

2007 is nearing it's close so it would be interesting if some of us could do a "lesser known top 10" list to shine light on some of the best of the many bands we've talked about in this thread...

I just rather see bands remain true to themselves, in stead of obviously having followed some kind of 'Audience Participation'- course. As much as I love Mariusz's bass playing and voice, I couldn't help but feel quite irritated that he so much asked for 'cheering & clapping' throughout all of his lovely, intimate songs.
BURSTING THE BUBBLE, that is, for me.
Sorry to be the proverbial 'Fly in the Ointment' right here - but I'd rather be honest than anything else...
