Damn fans of obscure music! How dare they have opinions that differ from King Crimson776? Everybody knows that obscure music is terrible! THEY'RE ALL FAKING IT!

Bad obscure music, like the mediocre 70's bands that wish they were Yes, that is, and all that Avant/RIO sh*t
my case:1.avant music is rad if done well, in a semi-melodic way.2. dream theater are good, sometimes a tad overplayed, but they have some seriously good songs as well to make up for that. 3. not every prog band from that era wishes they were yes or king crimson....blah blah. some of them were just as unique as the originators. 4. elitism is a result of someone being a douche bag about other forms of music they don't like. We are all elitists in some way, because we all have certain opinions about music we don't like and the reasoning behind those reasons would offend someone with different opinions. elitism is just a natural process for anyone who takes music more seriously than the average joe. get over it.

Uh, no; elitism is when someone thinks of themselves as better than the fray. The people here at PA take music seriously and most aren't elitist.

About your whole speech there, see the little smiley with the tounge sticking out that I put after what I said? Really consider it for a while.

I think it's hard to be so into music as an art form as we are without becoming at least somewhat elitist. However, I feel elitist is also something that's outgrown. When we learn to accept more styles and understand someone's reasons for enjoying the ones we don't like we can overcome our elitism.

Not all styles are the same, but I think there's at least something likable to find in almost all of them (except rap/r&b/hip hop maybe).

Yeah Crimson, most people really mean what they say they use a tongue out smiley, they just put the obnoxious smiley there to attempt to defuse it somewhat.

Besides that, nothing in your posts suggested that you were joking.

Garnishing an insult with a "funny" smiley doesn't make the insult any less hurtful. Unless you made clear in many reviews and/or posts that you really have a different opinion nobody will believe that your post was meant to be a joke.

^I must say that it doesn't look like an insult to me, smiley or not - the exchange looked reasonably humour-centred.
The important thing is not to stop questioning.

^ I wouldn't feel insulted by the post - I'm just saying that some people might, regardless of whether a smiley is added or not. And many people might not have read the previous exchange of messages.

I think that whenever you use sarcasm or irony you simply have to be careful to avoid misunderstandings ...

What I mean by the tounge smiley is that I have that opinion but I don't mean it so literally or in a hurtful way. It's like someone saying "bah, enough of this Avant RIO sh*t" if someone is overplaying it. Not all avantgarde stuff is bad, I just think alot of it is, so I said "all that Avant/RIO sh*t" without any seriousness at all. It carries the same weight as saying, "this is lame", and then grinning like a jackass about it. That's all. Besides, if someone dissed "all those crappy 90's bands that want to be Dream Theater" and, say, "all that Neo-Prog sh*t", no one would have said a damn thing. (annoying smiley)

I doubt it, and it still makes you look like an idiot. The wink smiley is what is used when you're joking around.

Yeah, f**k elitism, seriously.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (or, in this case, ear), 'nuff said.

Or this guy: (you know it's true) Or if you're being a real jackass: and then there's the ultamite jerk thing:

But yeah, judging on the band that you quoted you probably already think I'm a jackass so no hard feelings in the slightest, feel free to shyt all over the good music that I like, that's perfectly fine (the designated "joking around" smiley)

What we listen too, is influenced by so many different factors; your age, your location in the county you live in, if you had older siblings, (or parents for that matter), who exposed you to different music, school, friends, and on and on. Certain situations will also influence you; The music that was playing when you met your significant other, when you broke up, when you "did it", and so forth.
Because of these different factors, it's hard for me to understand how anyone can feel superior (be an elitist), by the type of music/bands they listen too. It's sort of a "walk a mile in my shoes" sort of thing.
I'm a huge Dream Theater fan. I took my son to his first concert which was Dream Theater. It was a great "bonding" time. I have some very good friends who don't care for them. They're still my friends. :) If you don't care for them, or find them tedious, or whatever, cool by me. You're not going to change my opinion about them. You're not going to hurt my feelings, or make me question my musical tastes. It is, what it is! Cause I'm sure there is stuff we both like. Or music that you're familiar with that I've never heard of, that I would probably like too.
For me, it would be great if a lot of different progressive music would become popular. Then it would be a lot easier to find it in the stores, on the radio and what not. Certainly it would be nice if it broke the strangle hold that Rap, Hip Hop, Pretty Boy Bands, Blonde Bimbo Music and the like has on "popular" music these days. It would make "creative" music be a force once again (like we had in the late 60's and 70's until Disco destroyed everything).

in the last 6 months I have become sort of a closet Opeth fan....  GR did grab me in a way the others didn't... the reasons may be personal though.. which I would touch on in my reivew of course LOL Heart  I agree... Still Life and Blackwater Park are great albums.  I was going to review GR, may still some day, as a 5 star in relation to what I said in my DT 'review'.LOL  It really was the first 'classic' prog metal album that actually bumped RPI albums out of my disk changer...  that . to me... speaks volumes about a prog metal album.

I'm still amazed that somebody was able to work the word "rad" into a PA post. Embarrassed
