[this may need to be moved to another forum..i don't know]
To say that it's difficult to get one's own music successfully marketed these days seems like an understatement. CD sales are dropping in favor of downloadable mp3 files. Personally I don’t like this at all for several reasons…but anyway… Those of you who are / have produced your own music…how do you or are you distributing / marketing it as far as format goes. CD or mp3 ? My songs are still in production and I was planning on eventually going through CDBaby selling my music as a CD album. A Salt Lake City based sound engineer – producer told me the other day, “forget CDs…they are history…everything is going Mp3 format” Is anyone else besides me a little stymied regarding this and related issues ? . |

^ Do you know that CDBaby now also sell mp3s? I think it's a really smart move ... but you should try to make the mp3s available for a reduced price, since you're not getting something tangible people need some kind of incentive to choose mp3.

^ I think it's a smart move both for CDBaby to offer mp3 downloads and for you to sell your music through CDBaby ... I don't know any other online music store which cares so much about the artists (if what they're claiming is true, 91% of the revenue of the mp3 sales goes directly to the artist).

Free Mp3 ...Hmmm. your strategy is to give listeners a little "taste" a "sample" before they purchase ? . |

a lot of artists offer some of their songs for listening on sites like MySpace etc. Marketing oneself on MySpace seems to be mandatory for artists nowadays. |

"mandatory" ... yes it does seem like that doesn't it ? 1. i don't like their "user agreements" ... example: garageband forces people to "sign" two separate agreements before uploading music 2. uploading to garageband changes all music formats from 128 kbps/stereo to 32kbps.mono. . |

I download music that I want, with the assumption that I will purchase some of the artist's music later if I like them enough to want to give them my money. I don't have nearly enough cash to buy all of the music I acquire.

Isn't that only if you select the "Low Bandwidth" option?
Both of our tracks (in the Prog Rock top 30, BTW ) have retained their stereo-ness and sound like 128k to me; http://www.garageband.com/charts/prog_rock/current.html?|pe1|S9ncJmn4vPT-JFy1Yw
- I found I had to select Play all, then use the buttons to skip through the other tracks... although they're all well worth a listen and better produced than ours... Edited by Certif1ed - December 04 2007 at 08:53 |

i must have missed that bandwidth option i guess. i don't recall seeing it. top 30 in prog eh...i am very happy for you Cert i decided to just use myspace & garageband to simply provide a link to my site. i bought a site and domain for only $60 for a whole year...that's not bad. and i didn't have to "sign" any air-tight agreements. OTOH, maybe i'll go ahead and upload a couple to GB just to see what happens. btw, Cert, if you get a chance i would appreciate your technical input. you have good "sound engineer" ears i think...
