Topic: Freddie Mercury vs Jim Morrison Posted: December 02 2007 at 08:27 |
This is not just who is the best vocalist (freddie could win easily) but all of their musical gifts that make them rock legends. In other words, who is the better musician?
PS:I can't post polls in the prog-related forum.

The Doors is totally Ray Manazrek. Jim is like the excuse they needed to get an album released.. Still, he was pretty hot in the early days, and freddy had his teeth-thing going... Just kidding (not really), but i'm just not a great fan of either, so i won't vote. That's how big a person i am.

Jim Morrison was not a musician at all, so Freddie easily wins.
Who is better singer? Both - Jim for The Doors, Freddie for Queen.
Both are bright personalities, but completely different. I don't see the reason to comare them in any way.

Freddie all the way. He is probably the best vocalist in all of music and to pit him against one of the worst is sheer lunacy. He had an incredible range and could go from soft and angelic to edgy and menacing in an instant.
Jim on the other hand sounds like me after I've had a lot to drink, and I don't sound good sober.
As for the better musician part. Freddie was an accomplished pianist, and I don't think Jim played any instruments. So again, Freddie all the way. Finally, Freddie was a much better songwriter than Jim. Freddie wrote some incredible music and lyrics. I don't know how much music Jim really wrote, but I don't really like the Doors, so any music he may have written, I wouldn't think was any good anyway. Lyrically, Jim always thought he was a much better lyricist than he really was. Although as a prog fan, I love a little bit of pretention with my music, Jim's lyrics were all pretension and no substance.
Can you tell, I've never been a Doors fan.

There's no comparison between Freddy and Jim but if I had to choose one of them cos personality, voice, as a composer or anything I vote Freddy...

I voted for Freddie Mercury, one of the most important musician in rock ever, and Queen is an important band. The Doors and specially Jim Morrison i can't stand, sorry but this band and musician for me are totaly forgetable. So Freddie Mercury is my vote.

This isnt even a question for me.
Jim: A constantly high singer for a mediocre band, who is considered one of the best songwriters of rock n' roll for his lyrics about how horny he was.
Freddy: An absolutely brilliant singer who came up with half of the music and 90% of the lyrics for Queen.
Guess who I chose.

Come on, Jim was never a real musician, he was a vocalist and lyricist, so the comparison isnīt compatible.
I voted for Jim though because Iīm such a Doors fan.
Freddy is a better singer technically but I like Jims voice more, Freddy is too high up for me. Doors music is also more cooler than Queen music which can be a bit too cheezy at times. Jim is a better lyricist than Freddy. Combination of mystical stuff and straight to the point lyrics.

My vote goes to the Lizard King, Jim Morrison, simply because he is my preffered.

Jim, look at the albums that the Doors released after he died. Is that what the people who thought he was holding the band back had in mind? They were nothing without the Lizard King, just uninspired musicians with nothing to do. Freddie's got a good voice but he's a priss and Queen kind of sucks except for a few songs, so, Jimbo all the way, his lyrics owned too.

Actually, as much of a Freddie fan as I am, that's not quite true. He and Brian each wrote about an equal amount of songs, both words and music, and Roger and John also wrote a song or two each per album.

I'm not exactly ecstatic about either band, but the one outstanding characteristic that Queen had easily over The Doors was Freddie Mercury (the second was Brian May)

Freddie is really the best singer I have ever heard. I can't find a singer that has all these elements perfected as much as Freddy had: _Beautiful voice _Versatility (from the most aggressive singing to the most heartbreaking lamenting to the happy upbeat energetic singing) _Very big range _Emotion
Plus, he's a great songwriter and plays some really nice piano (not a virtuoso, but he writes good piano parts)

I wonder how easily you, guys, stick labels: mediocre band, uninspired musicians with nothing to do.
I always naively thought The Doors is a combination of Jim's lyrical/vocal talents, his charisma and and musical talents of the rest musicians of the band. I don't think Robbie Krieger or Ray Manzarek are so poor musically. Even more, I can hardly imagine The Doors sound without them.

Back in my teens I adored both bands, as I'm getting older I love The
Doors less and less. It's not like I appreciate the music
less, it's just that Jim's lyrics turned from "lightened" and
"prophetic" to "smartarsey" and "nonsensical".
