Holy crap, 139 pages about RIO music, I didn´t realize this genre was so popular here (hmm... or maybe it isn´t, maybe you´re just dedicated nerds of the genre ;) , I don´t know to much of the genre (just know stuff like Sleepyt.G.M., M.Patton-stuff and F. Zappa) but am getting more interested in the genre and listening to some bands in the key-album section, I really like Samla M.M.
 
Anyway I put the only band from my country that plays this kind of music in the unsigned bands section http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=43449
Nobody needs to go anywhere else. We are all, if we only knew it, already there.

Welcome, Hamfari.

There's plenty to explore in the RIO/Avant-Prog field.  If you want to start anywhere, I would start at the beginning.

Therefore, listening to the earlier pioneers of avant-garde (progressive) music, maybe a start.  Try early Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, Albert Marcoeur and even Frank Zappa in many regards.

Then discover Henry Cow, SMM (who you already like), Etron Fou Leloublan, Univers Zero, Present, Art Zoyd and perhaps even some Zeuhl, such as Magma or Zao.

If you want some wonderful modern avant-prog, try bands such as:

Guapo
Koenjihyakkei
Wha-ha-ha
Ruins
Korekyojinn
Sotos
Zaar
Amygdala
Zypressen
Rational Diet
OOIOO
Absolute Zero
Alamaailman Vasarat

Plus many more.

Just wait for Assaf to respond, he'll have a whole list of great bands to investigate. Wink

Depends on your taste of course, but I think they're sublime in most cases. I'm a rater at Gnosis, and I gave O.M. a 14 [out of 15 tops]. My other two faves [13s] are Music for Other Occasions & Rags.

If you like chamber prog then Lindsay Cooper's solo works are essential. My favourite is Oh! Moscow - it's a curious beast, a kind of RIO musical, but it works and there are some very imaginative arrangements. The Rags/Golddiggers album is also worth picking up; both were film soundtracks and include mostly shorter, song based material - kind of a stepping stone between Henry Cow and News From Babel.

A Finnish act called Haare. They had their own myspace page before, but it seems to have disappeared.
 
There's still a sample track of the band on Julian Cope's Unsung.

I'm currently listening to the latest release on AltRock (the people what brung us Rational Diet and Yugen). It's Kinesis, the debut album by an Italian band called Accordo dei Contrari. They're already listed here under jazz/rock fusion, which is perfectly appropriate, but there's a definite hint of RIO lurking in there as well, with a touch of Canterbury for good measure; there's something of Samla Mammas Manna or the Muffins about them. Well worth checking out.

Hey, RIO isn't really my bag so I don't usually find myself on this thread, but what are your expert opinions on must have zappa albums? I have The Grand Wazoo and Zoot Allures (my two favourites) Hot Rats, Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Freak Out! I also have Jazz From Hell, but I don't care for it. What next?
Would you like to watch TV, or get between the sheets, or contemplate the silent freeway, would you like something to eat?

If you're into Zappa's more avant rock moments (and to judge from the albums you've listed so far that seems to be the case) you could also try Burnt Weeny Sandwich (don't be put off by the first track) and Lumpy Gravy from his early career, Waka/Jawaka from his 70s output and the excellent live set Make a Jazz Noise Here from the 80s. The Yellow Shark is a performance of his 'serious' music by the Ensemble Moderne, excellent stuff but I'd recommend hearing it before you buy!

Received this promo from Marcello from Altr0ck last week and its a grower. Melodic, exciting, many interesting ideas, a lot of variety in there. Should appeal to both jazz-rock and avant-rock folks.
 
One  of the highlights of this year, even though it is a sort of re-release from last year.

On another note, I've posted here before about me starting to explore the music/noise of Supersilent (which was also a major reason for me to start the thread "Is There A Line Between Music & Noise) and I have so far came across the first 4 albums and I can spot a progerssion as I advanced, a sort of being less raw, less blurry and becoming a bit more focused, but maybe that's just me....

To mention another group I discovered lately - I was sent a promo copy of the 2007 release by the experimental progressive music group Random Touch called A True Conductor Wears A Man.
I have already started writing the review (I'll post it here when it's done as well as in Progressive Ears.com who were those who sent me the cd's).
I was so impressed with what I heard that I proceeded to go to their website and order their other albums.
 

This is not rock, not your average music or progressive music for that matter (but progressive it is, just not what is usually meant when I hear references to it).

This is a mix of sounds made by various instruments in a way that creates some tunes, ambiances, atmospheric textures, energetic patterns and some melodic lines.

Another very good and interesting release in this ballpark is Annie Gosfield's - Flying Sparks & Heavy Machinery which was released through Tzadik
