South West Trains are a bunch of Censored incompetent Censored who couldn't organise the Censored traffic on an uninhabited Scottish island. here is the main body of an email I sent the CensoredCensoreding Censoreds a few minutes ago:

I boarded the 20.27 train for Strawberry Hill. The guard announced that there would be a delay because of a missing member of staff, and recommended that passengers join the Guildford train. Shortly after this he recommended that passengers for Raynes Park join the Hampton Court train, which I did. A couple of minutes later the guard on the Hampton Court train announced that the train was delayed because of a missing member of staff, and recommended that passengers run back to the Strawberry Hill train, which I did, only just managing to squeeze through the doors as they tried to eat my briefcase. None of this - neither the delays (approximately 15 minutes) nor the reason for them is posted on your website. Nobody at Waterloo seemed to know what was happening, unless getting commuters to jog between platforms 1 and 4 is now part of the job description for your guards, and no clear information was available on any of the dot matrix displays or via the guard's announcements (although, to be fair, we were given numerous warnings about the possibility of beggars boarding the train).

It's pretty obvious that some problems were being experienced, but given the enormous public subsidy received by South West Trains, plus my own £1632 per annum contribution, perhaps somebody can dream up a contingency plan, brief the staff accordingly and maybe use some of your communications technology to make sure that there are regular updates. I doubt that the problems were unprecedented in the history of rail travel, and given your company's ability to mobilise a small army of ticket inspectors every morning I find the lack of staff available a bit baffling.

I use your service to commute to work. There is no realistic alternative way for me to travel, so I can hardly threaten to take my custom elsewhere. Incidents like this are a regular occurrence, which is inevitable on such a crowded network. What is not inevitable is the incompetence and lack of clear direction on any occasion when there is a minor glitch; having lived in Japan for several years I have seen that a busy urban rail network can run smoothly, even when earthquakes and flooding in the typhoon season are occupational hazards.

Please, if you reply to this, bear in mind that I am not complaining about the delay itself, but rather the way that the problem was dealt with and your heavily subsidised company's failure to manage the situation in a manner that would minimise inconvenience for your paying customers.

Or am I being unreasonable?

'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

No, you're being perfectly frank and honest.  Great letter!

I do suspect though, that:

a) the two missing staff members were one and the same
b) or the two missing staff members did not exist in the first place

Good luck with that, I wouldn't hold your breath for a decent reply though (but you probably already know that).  If you do get a reply, it will be written by the 15 year old work experience person, who they will use as a scapegoat, for such circumstances.

Let's hope that isn't the case.

Wow Syz, no yuu are NOT being unreasonable! not at all........ i remember forking out for my yearly season ticket when I worked in London, and you are right it would not have hurt quite so much if each daily commute wasn't such a frikkin pantomime, or at least if there was someone on hand to explain the plot!

I blame the decline in steam locomotion - you wouldn't have got this problem when every passenger train was pulled by one of those behemoths; driver & fireman on the plate & a guard with a flag & regulation whistle; just walk firmly through the wall to platform 9 3/4 & board the express to school at the beginning of every term, bypassing Trevor Howard trying to get off as usual with that posh bit of totty, lean out of the window & wave at a young beskirted Jenny Agutter (wondering why you're having such curious stirrings in your nether regions) & wonder why Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon appear to be dressed as ladies...

...now that was rail travel.

I'm always worried when I see Miss Marple and/or Hercule Poirot on the train. You know that something is in the offing and that's not including the sandwiches.

If I ever see little fat Belgians on the train with a waxed moustache & a supercilious expression, I always tend to punch them in the face for their creator's crimes against literature...

...they don't like me in Brussels.

If you think that's extortionate;I live not far from Chris but I am one station outside the London Outer Zone 6.I had to pay an eye watering £1,944 last January. It will probably exceed £2,000 next January.

Lee...I've just gone and got my last monthly paypacket... £785.44 net.

I think this MUST highlight the growing divide between the cost of living in London, compared with the shires....

...the was an outcry here recently, when the bus fare into Hereford rose from £2.95 to £3.10 for a 21 mile journey (owing to a reduction in govt subsidisation....)
