easy..... I'm more surprised that anyone who would  pick Rush than Genesis or Floyd.  Yes has always been tagged as a 'musicians' group... a group that musicians ... players... can really dig. Much like Rush has been

Genesis .. and Floyd are much in the same vein...  where the sum far exceeds the value of the parts.

Nice observation Micky - it seems that's a good explanation for the high numbers on the Beatles & the Who, too.

As a casual non-voting observer opf this thread,  (yeah, I like Yes and own a lot of their albums, but don't think of myself as a fan per say), I'm suprised the Beatless are doing so badly as they are one of the few bands Yes covered, but I don't suppose too many Yesfans would like Simon and Garfunkel either.Wink

I guess Yes definitely knows how to translate other bands' songs well. Actually the other day I was listening to the Buffalo Springfield box set, and to my surprise, "Everydays" (recorded in '67) was on there! (And yes, that is the same song that Yes performed on "A Time And A Word.") Not many people seem to know that a Yes song was composed by Stephen Stills... I wonder what other American Folk(y)-Rock bands the members of Yes listened to...

(in advance - sorry for the tangential comment Smile)

I'm pretty sure that I've read that they listenened to Simon & Garfunkel early on.

you read correctly Clap... both Anderson and Squire were big fans.. and one of the commen musical loves they shared.

Of course S&G - the source of the famous "America"! (I was actually referring to the possibility of other bands in that vein outside of S&G and Buffalo Springfield that they drew influence from)

You're right, Yes is a band of great musicians, more than Genesis or PF.But the difference is not about that (could be...but isn't...). But to me all that counts is the compositions, because that's what I hear, and the compositions of the Floyd and Genesis are at least sometimes GREAT (eg. Firth of Fifth). I also cannot understand why some people choose Rush, because they have instrumental brilliancy and great compositions (eg. La Villa Strangiato)
To be the one who seeks so I may find .. (Metallica)

has anyone hearrd by the way the Syn's version of the The Gangster Opera.... think it was from 67.. .sounds like Squire and the boys were listening to Blind Willie McTell. LOL If sounds like they lifted the main riff right from his most famous song.

I've heard The Gangster Opera off of Original Syn...but the sound quality is atrocious...and I have no idea who Blind Willie McTell is.  Embarrassed

you must have the same copy I do.... on frickin acetate or some sh*t like that... isn't the riff the same as the Blind Willie McTell song made famous several years later by a seminal american band..  The Allman Brothers.... Statesboro Blues.  Listen to both and tell me it isn't exactly the same riff.

As a Yes fan, The Beatles are the ones i can't listen really, although I admit they were good musicians and a really important group that appeared.

Well, no wonder I hate Yes fans. They hate the Who, and they're not too fond of the Tull. Or...the Beatles?!? This amuses me; it's obvious that the Yessers liked the Beatles a bit.

(And they don't like Rush? But Rush is like Yes Part Two: Yes with Balls (but a lesser grasp of melody).)

Jethro Tull bores me to death...seriously, I really can't stand one minute with that "folky-flute" gnome...

Want some real flute:

Try DALTON, early GENESIS (Twilight Alehouse), CELESTE, DE DE LIND...

Wow

You know, IMO it's more exciting to stick to the energetic and absolutely "UNreal" flute playing of Ian Anderson! Wink

I've never really liked Led Zep, but I also don't really like Rush (because of the singing) and Genesis (again the singing).

oh God! Led Snorefest. i have never understood the appeal of this band.

and they are back together,  hyped up beyond all recognition .

the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'd rather go and see ABBA if they reformed than Led Zepplin. In fact it's a close tie to who are worst L ZZZZzzzzz or U2! arghghghgh

I hate 'em both.

:O)
