Dear all,

I would like to translate a progressive rock review from Italian (and German) to English so that I can put the English translation on the band's web-site (and use it in publicity materials).  I've tried on-line translation tools and these are not sufficiently good for my purposes.

Is there a native Italian speaker who can help?

The page is at:

I can offer a complimentary copy of the album for your help.

Any native German spreakers - could you help with the review at:

Best wishes
Rory

Would she like to take a stab at Robert Wyatt's Italian lyrics on Comicopera?  I'm willing to transcribe...

I've had a look at the review, and I can tell you it is positive. However, if you want a translation of the complete text, I'm afraid you'll have to be patient, because at the moment I am a bit busy with other things.

Way cool, here's the transcription...

Del Mondo
E’stato un tempo il mondo govane e forte,
odorante di sangue fertile,
rigoglioso di lotte, moltitudini,
spledeva prentendeva molto…
Famiglie donne incinte, stregamenti,
Facce gambe pance braccia…

Dimora della carne, riserva di calore,
sapore e familiare odore…

sapore e familiare odore…
Il nostro mondo adesso debole e vecchio,
puzza il sangue versato infetto…

Povert magnanima, mala ventura,
Concedi compassione ai figli tuoi…
Glorifichi la vita, e gloria sia,
Glorifichi la vita e gloria…

E’stado un tempo il mondo gio
odorante di sangue fertile…
Famiglie donne incinte, sfregamenti,
Facce gambe pance braccia.

this is weird, the babelfish translation of my transcription:

Of the E' World be a time the strong world govane and, smelling of fertile, rigoglioso blood of fights, multitudes, spledeva prentendeva a lot... Families pregnant women, stregamenti, Faces legs bellies arms... Dwelling of the meat, reserves of heat, sapore and odore relative... E' cavit of woman who creates the world, waking on the time the protegge... It contains member of man who s' raises and pushes, Insoddisfatto then destroys... Our world now old weak person and, Smells the poured blood infects... E' be a time the young and strong world, smelling of fertile blood... Dwelling of the meat, risereva of heat, sapore and odore relative... Our world now old weak person and, smells the poured blood infects... Magnanimous Povert, mala luck, You grant to compassion to the sons yours... Glorifichi the life, and Gloria is, Glorifichi the life and Gloria... E' stado a time the smelling world gio of fertile blood... Families pregnant women, rubbings, Faces legs bellies arms.

I'd start by Wyatt's lyrics (nothing special, in my opinion, pretty abused common sense)

Of the World:
Once the world was young and bold / smelling like fertile blood / blooming with fights and multitudes / it shone and expected much... / families, pregnant women, rubbing / faces, legs, bellies, arms.
Home to the flesh, source of heat / familiar taste and smell... / it's the womb of a woman / which creates the world / watches over time and protect it / It holds a man's member which rises and pushes / and then unsatisfied destroys.
Our world is now old and weak / stinking like infected spilt blood.
Once the world was young and bold / smeling like fertile blood / home to the flesh, source of heat / familiar taste and smell...
Our world is now old and weak, stinking like infected blood.
Poor lad / what and unluck! / Have mercy on your children
Glorify life, and may glory be! / Glorify life, and may glory...
Once the world was young and bold / smelling like fertile blood / families, pregnant women, rubbing / faces, legs, bellies, arms

This is the translation now received.  Any Italian speakers want to comment on whether it is true to the spirit of the Italian?

Twenty-five years after One Day a New Horizon, Protos are back - the progressive rock creation of Rory Ridley-Duff and Steve Anscombe.  The Noble Pauper's Grave is presented as a progressive concept album which tells the story of a noble who abandons his origins to help the poor and the weak in a manner that is reminiscent of the Christian monks in medieval times.  The CD narrates the noble’s life until his death, and depicts his big-hearted fight to help others by supporting the weaker party in a struggle against oppression.

The thirteen tracks are split into two types: the odd number tracks are the musical parts; the even number tracks are a narration of the story written by Steve Anscombe.  This inventive approach allows the listener to fully enjoy the drama of the instrumental music and manages to avoid being boring.  Musically we are presented with an evolution of the classic Protos sound that was apparent on the debut album.  This album combines an eighties sound and mixes it with a progressive rock style to create moments of great atmosphere.

Rory and Steve have taken good care to preserve their melodic style and the song writing manages to create a perfect mix between music and narration.  It is incredible how the various songs reflect the mood of the narration moment by moment - they successfully seduce the listener so that they become immersed in the story.

The work lasts 51 minutes and almost half of the CD is concentrated in two main tracks - The Rally and Outcry – which represent the soul of the album.  There is also a fine closing track Departures that depicts an emotional farewell at the noble’s funeral.  A lovely touch is the way the thunderstorm marks both the birth and the death of the noble, closing of the circle of life.

Production quality and mixing are of a good standard.  The cover appears a bit bare, but is in line with the album's title.  This is a good album that will fascinate lovers of progressive electronic sounds and ambient dreamy music.  I recommend this CD – it is not easy to find albums as well made as this.

The translation preserves the spirit of the original to the letter, and it is quite good in itself - though, personally, I would have made different choices in order to make the text sound more English and less 'translated'.

Sorry for not having been able to tackle it myself, but these days I'm extremely busy with my own studies and other issues.

hi guys,
just to point out that the song sang by Robert Wyatt has not been written by him, not the words nor the music..the genius behind it  is the band  C.S.I.  for the music and Gianni Lindo Ferretti for the lyrics, the latter being the one who brought (believe it or not) the italian punk music to life...  probably my favourite italian artist .. an amaizing Man...

Thanks for verifying the translation - it was done by a language assistant at the university where I lecture.  I appreciate that everyone is busy.  Thanks for checking it over.

Best wishes
