I dislike it... and I'm being as amiable as possible about it.

I bet you would love it if Foobar hat it.

I think that it (Winamp 5.5) is on a par with both Foobar and Creative Labs Organiser (Bundled with my Creative mp3 player.)
Each have different pros and cons. I'm not fussed with the visulisations/plug-ins.When I play music through my PC I;m usually working or surfing on it so visulisations are surplus to requirement. The tagging and album art sections are impressive though.I feel a bit disappointed that you have to pay for the upgrade to rip and burn CDs in mp3 format when this is standard on most players. I'm impressed with the media section on Winamp. The free Winamp downloads are an excellent idea. Edited by Man Erg - November 02 2007 at 07:23 |

I'd switch to my old CD player if that happened |

I'll never understand how people can be that stubborn. Well, you don't know what you're missing!

I'm not stubborn about anything, it's just that I've an education in arts and my profession is into arts too, so those vizualisations creep my sense of art. Anyway, from what I see, the new Winamp is much better, if it had different (sober) graphics and it if it did not use so many resources, I would applaud it (while keeping my Foobar). I wouldn't even had interfered with the Winamp thread if you hadn't started it by saying all those not having the new Winamp should be ashamed |

1. What do you mean by "sober"? The new Bento skin is very minimalistic.
2. What's the problem with visualisation and arts? They're more like the light show of a rock/metal concert than a work of art. |

1. Well, for example, I keep my Foobar on the default skin, which I like most; it's black and white, I'd say that's pretty sober. The design is also very simple.
2. A light show is a form of visual art, too. There are professional visualisations made by VJs who are video artists, those are great. I found the ones you linked terrible. But I don't say you shouldn't like them, de gustibus non est disputandum. |

^ no problem, the tendency to bash other people's recommendations is common around here. You tend to get a thick skin!

Actually I admire your sense of calm and debate Mike, is that typically German or is it just you?

I've had my fair share of heated debates ... I've found that often I can make my point more effectively by letting the opposing views stand as they are. In this case people can try out Foobar, Winamp, Milkdrop etc. and make up their own mind. I love watching Milkdrop ... there are hundreds of presets, some are quite artistic, some are funny and hilarious, some aren't good at all IMO. The plugin even has a built-in rating system which you can use to vote out the presets you don't like. And if you're good at Maths you can even create your own presets, which is what some of the VJs do which you mentioned too.

I'm very impressed with Winamp 5.5. I backed up all of my files from my mp3 player into it yesterday. It's much easier to use for that purpose than the other players that I have (Foobar,Windows and Creative Labs).

Yeah - not. Why would you want to do that if you get FLAC, Ogg and others for free. |

Well, there is one reason - my dear MP3 player only accepts MP3 and WMA |

I'm presuming 5.5 is XP/Vista only, because it simply won't run under Win2K. I've always used WinAMP, but because 5.5 doesn't work, I've reverted back to 5.3 again. I actually use it in Classic Mode, because I made my own skin many years ago and like to use it.
I don't need an MP3 burner on my player either, I use CDex. |

5.5 works fine with me, James. and I'm using XP.
Milkdrop is cool, but I don't see that much difference from similar visualizations across WMP and WinAmp. Sonic Digital Home Media for all your CD burning processes.... |

I believe it works, Stonie, 'cause you're using XP. It installs for me fine, but then doesn't run once it is installed.
I presume it's due to lack of Win2K support. |

I downloaded 5.5. 30 seconds into the first track I listened to, it crashed. Not exactly a convincing start seeing as how I never had any problems with the previous version I had.

I use Windows Media Player 11 and am happy with it. Anyone have experience with that and WinAmp? Also does it play wma format digital music files?
I've also tried Realplayer, and i-pod player program. Prefer WMP 11. Edited by Slartibartfast - November 05 2007 at 08:08 |
