Towards Finding An 8th Classic Prog Rock Band

Gentle Giant by far, they should replace Rush in fact. Rush have even said that they have been influenced by GG. Why the hell is VDGG in the lead? They're ok but they meander way to much and aren't memorable at all. Whatever, more people vote for GG, I would think that people on this site would realize that they are the best choice. I love Camel, but they were heavily influenced by many of the bands on the list, especially Pink Floyd, so to put them on the same list as their influences would be ridiculous. Frank Zappa would have to be my second choice, likely for obvious reasons.

That alone should be a compelling reason why Camel should be in the big 8.

first off... when talking popularity.. there are no right or wrong answers..  and yet again.. interesting  questions and polls like this because yet another  variation of the some old sh*t that passes for popularity polls.

now ... for the way I answered the question....

can you honestly say that Camel was as important as Zappa  and defined prog in the manner Zappa did.. or had anywhere near the career  he did.

If so.. I'd love to hear how ....

not sure what the 13 people who voted for Camel were thinking...  no where in the same league.. musically.. or in importance.. or in abiltiy to be seen outside of the world of prog ..which is important to transcend if you want to be on that list.

As big a Maiden fan as I am, I do agree 100% with the above statement. IM were certainly influenced by prog, and were a big influence in the development of Prog Metal, but here we're talking about Classic Prog, and they don't belong to that category. Perhaps, after this post, some people here will realise I am not a fangirl....

Back to the topic at hand, I voted Caravan, who deserve much more credit as prog greats than they get. I'd also put Gentle Giant almost at the same level, because of their authentic progressive spirit and outstanding musicianship.

I'd go with Gentle Giant and feel guilty about leaving out PFM. Can we make it a 9?

Has to be Camel as a great, I love Gentle Giant and there music is just brilliant but there not on of the big prog bands really. Same for Iron Maiden, like the music but not a big prog band (there just big on the metal side). Has to be Camel.
