I am very interested at making home electronica, with beats, loops, synthesized bits and all, I just don't know where to start. For example, I just don't know what the instruments/tools are called. I really like the sounds and overall framework of the music on Thom Yorke's Eraser, and would liek to make something similar, in a way. Also, the sort of early ambient work Aphex Twin did on "Selected Ambient Works" is just about what I'm looking for. I think I just need an introduction to the scene, but the musical equipment I don't know about. Can someone help me?

Reason 4.0 and a USB keyboard - all you need to begin to write.

I'd go for Reason too, but only because it's what I use and have found it to be pretty versatile.
You can down load a demo of the software from the Propellerheads website: http://www.propellerheads.se/
To add live instruments and vocals to any music you make using it you would also need some PC audio studio software.

If running a Mac, the obvious choice would be Logic with Ultrabeat. Although it's sort of on the expensive side...

You probably want to look into sequencers and sampling equitment, though nowadays you can probably just use only computer programs (I have no idea wich ones)
