UNEXPECT have been around for some time now, but it is really with 2006 release of In a Flesh Aquarium through the End Records that they have garnered much (deserved) attention.
Insane, avant-garde metal, relentless - all those can be said about this release. It is an intense piece of progressive metal, which should appeal to many here in PA.
Their PA bio:
Though they were predated by a straightforward thrash metal band, Unexpect have quickly evolved into one of the prog world's most forward thinking outfits. Combing operatic elements and shades of classical music with nearly every style of metal imaginable (from death through to gothic metal) and topping it off with an extremely challenging avant-garde approach, their sound must be heard to be believed. The group's seeds were planted by a thrash ground called Unepxected, whose ranks included guitarist/vocalist Artagoth and bassist Zircon. In 1996 the group expanded to add guitarist/vocalist Syriak and drummer Ben Gelinas, at which point they shortened their name to Unexpect and began encorperating new influences into their sound. The following year Lunorin took over as drummer, with keyboardist Merzeny, violinist Le Batleur and female vocalist Elda expanding their lineup to a whopping seven people, with whom they would record the melodic death metal influenced Utopia in 1998 (to be released independantly in 1999). In the following years Zircon, Elda and Merzenya would all depart from the band, to be replaced by bassist ChaotH (infamous for his use of a 9 string bass) and female vocalist Leïlindel. Lunorin changed his instrument to keyboards and his name to ExoD, with Landryx completing their lineup in 2003 as the new drummer. The _We, Invaders EP came out on Galy Records in 2003 and showcased the band's shocking evolution into an avant-garde monster, a path fully realized on 2006's In a Flesh Aquarium (released on The End RecordS).
Unexpect are truly a boundary pushing group, and should appeal to fans of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Augury, Kayo Dot and Arcturus, but most importantly to anybody seeking a serious challenge or shock from their musical diet. Links:

Awesome band!
I once reviewed In A Flesh Aquarium as the result of a giant orgy between the members of fantomas, the melvins, and MeltBanana, and all the members had babies, and made the babies grow up listening to nothing but operatic black metal... that would be UneXpect. awesome stuff. |

They could be good to a certain extent, but they tend to sound like rewinding a tape, IMO!!

Would you all mind not ruining this thread, please?
I welcome all opinions in thread I start, whether they are praising the band/album or criticizing it, therefore, I have no problem with PHP's post as I didn't have with other posts from other people here in other threads I started.

Hey guys, hope it's all right to revive this thread to plug some photos I took of an Unexpect gig a couple nights ago. They were FANTASTIC live - I like In a Flesh Aquarium but in the live setting it was even better, even though they didn't have their violinist with them.
I was a fan before the show but I'm a bigger fan now, which to me is the sign of a great live band. Anyway, here are the photos... four pages of them (links to the other pages are at the bottom). http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonwu/sets/72157603735095191/detail/ A couple small samples... Awesome pictures. I wish I had been able to see them, but the closest they came was about three hours from me last night.

god, I just saw them last nite and they were amazing!
I bought a copy of In A Flesh Aquarium from the singer (who was manning (or womening?) the booth at the time) and have been rediscovering the album today.
The album was great but does not quite live up to the live experience.
Even the drunken frat phillistines in attendance couldn't dampen my spirits as I waited through 3 local bands to see them.
Can't wait for new material. Her voice is breathtaking, the energy they had was boundless, and the 9 string basswork was beyond impeccable.
GAH IT WAS GOOD
