This thread is so awesome, I'm going to have to look into it more later today.  So many recommendations, it's almost overwhelming!  Clap RIO and the avant garde gets pushed under the bus so much, that's cool it remains such a hot topic here, both genres I find to be the most interesting when comparing to other modern music.  Sadly most people have no idea what the hell I'm talking about when I mention a band in the genre, or the genre 'Rock in Opposition' itself, which is just pathetic.

Well said, Mecca.

My girlfriend often asks me what the music I listen to sounds like.  As a fair share of it is avant-garde/RIO, I find it almost impossible to explain it.  Even progressive rock in general is often difficult to explain sometimes.

The proof is in the listening... yet I think she'd run a mile if she heard it, I have a good idea what her tastes are like.

Keep on listening to one of the great, yet scarce genres of music in the world. Clap

question: i've been listening to kew rhone a lot lately & swooning..I was wondering if anyone here might know of some other good John Greaves..

Not sure... I have A Little Bottle of Laundry on CD, but have yet to give it a spin.  I also gather there's a Kew Rhone 2 release out, so try and grab it if you can.

I really need to give Kew Rhone a spin too, I've still not done so... I'm so behind on everything!

'Songs' revisits some Kew Rhone tunes with Robert Wyatt on vocals, plus assorted other goodies from Greaves' back catalogue and a dollop of new stuff as well. His 80s albums suffer slightly from 80s synths and drum machines, but from the mid 90s onwards he reverted to largely acoustic music and his album were better for it. Little Bottle of Laundry is a varied set with some stunning moments. He's a nice guy, if a little garrulous after a gallon or so of red wine, and his next album will be settings of Verlaine's poetry; the song from it he played at the RIO festival was stunning.

I really like all of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's cds, but I don't really know where to go from there.  I like modern sounding prog.  If you could recommend anything it'd be great.  I'm sorry if someones already said something similar to this but theres 134 pages and I'm far too lazy and don't have enough time to go through it all.

Try Fantomas, if you aren't familiar with their music already. If you like heavier sounds, Massacre, Ruins, Korekyojin, Bone, Iamaboveontheleft and Aleuchatistas are all included and reviewed on here and play complex and skull crunchingly heavy music. Guapo explore similar territory but favour keyboards over guitars. Happy hunting, and I'm sure you'll get recommendations from some other members soon.

There's not much to add beyond the massive lists that avestin always has (do you have them stored somewhere? ;-) ), but I would strongly recommend Hella and Boredoms in the complex/intense section. I love Hold Your Horse Is, but recently they went in a different and many think not as good direction (adding a singer and bassist), so you can't really judge their debut by their myspace songs except for Republic of Rough and Ready which is from it. Boredoms went more Kraut on their newer releases, but Chocolate Synthesizer and Pop Tari are very good Fantomas-esque avantness (not to suggest that they're Fantomas-lite, for both are unique).

I finally got around to listening to the new Ahleuchatistas album, excellent material.  On par or better than What You Will.  Overall, I agree with what blogs and critics have said about it, it avoids being pretentious by means of a stripped down album, albeit very sophisticated. 

And have you guys heard when the new Bubblemath album will come out?  I suppose it should be soon, it's been 6 years now since their debut.  Maybe we'll get a more serious album (musically) this time around, because while I enjoyed the first album because of the cheesy prog cliches and all, that's also some of the reasons I couldn't listen to it, because basically the band enjoys making music they don't like.  Heh.

And to the person whose looking for music simlar to SGM, I agree with the recommendation of Idiot Flesh, especially their album Fancy.  You may also enjoy UneXpect, their music is just as fresh as SGM's, and I recommend their album In a Flesh Aquarium... definitely an album you'd like if you're fond of the intense SGM songs.  I'd also definitely look into Ron Anderson bands.  Once you've gotten into those bands, you may be able to get into the more subtle bands of this area like Secret Chiefs 3 or Tin Hat.

I have heard Unexpect's In a Flesh Aquarium.  It's quite amazing. =)  Maybe i'll check out some Ron Anderson bands.  I tried to find some upsilon acrux, nebelnest and a bunch of the other ones but i can't find any downloads.

A new The Molecules album was released this year, Friends.  Here's a good list of bands he's in...

Yea! PAK [one of his bands] is one of my favorite bands!
 
The best imo is PAK - Motel, their 1st is great too though: 100% Human Hair

Do you know both their albums (The Book of Knots)? Their latest album Traineater is in nearly every store over here, but I have been put off by some pretty negative reviews. Supposedly the first album is pretty neat though.
