 Topic: Need help with band suggestions...

There are so many bands out there and I'm sure there are many great ones, but I'm just starting out in Prog Rock and I'd like a few recomendations to start off. I'm a huge Rush fan - 2112, Hemispheres, Xanadu, Cygnus X-1 ect... are some of my favorite songs of all time. I was firstly wondering what bands sort of ressemble them. I like bass as a dominant instrument (I play it myself) and I like the heavier stuff, but no screamo or anything like that. What should I start off with?

Bands that resemble Rush is very hard for me to make a recommendation. But since you mentioned bass as the dominant instrument and liking the heavier stuff, I would recommend Aghora and Spiral Architect. These two bands have phenominal bass work. I recommend Aghora first because it is slightly more structured and better singing.

King Crimson - Red album is heavy but no screaming, Emerson, Lake and Palmer had heavy organ sound.
Yes albums Relayer and Drama are heavy sounding (well for the time) Yes is a top notch group they're worth checking anyway.
Magma is extremely bizarre group (if you can get past that) but have a heavy bass epic on Udu Wudu callled Das Futura.

Jethro Tull can get pretty heavy, on stuff l;ike Minstral in the Gallery Check the Heavy Prog subsection, that could help, not metal, but heavy stuff like Uriah Heep may be what you're looking for

You might even check my review of the album... I gave it 4 stars, which I think it really deserves. It's not as immediate as, say, "Aqualung", but in my opinion it is one of the most musically accomplished offerings by Jethro Tull. Anyway, if you are into bass (as I am), I think you MUST check out Yes. They can even be pretty heavy at times... If you like the heavier stuff, you should definitely try "Relayer" or "Going for the One". Chris Squire was known at the time as the 'lead bassist', and if you listen to him play you'll understand why. Ah, and if you can get hold of his solo album, "Fish Out of Water", you won't regret it.. It's been recently re-released in a deluxe edition including a DVD, and it's really worth the expense.

I'll read it.. yes I'd agree it's a strong 4 star record for the thread starter; both Tiles and Saga come to mind as bands that emulate (or remind) of Rush

Hey dude, look no further than Minstrel! It's Jeffrey's finest hour, if not the bass in general (at least tied with Quadropheania). Plus, it's pretty metal. Heavy, echoey guitar on a song about vikings.

well, primus can be somewhat heavy at times, and if you don't mind music that is downright silly then you might like them. also, a few other side projects of les claypool might be worth checking out.
like everyone says, yes is another great one, as is king crimson.

I agree with Tiles and Saga as good Rush references. I think that Primus is definitely a great bass reference with Les Claypool's bass playing, but his vocals/lyrics are strange. One good side project of his is Oysterhead which has only 1 album.
Another real good bass player is Billy Sheehan, if you aren't familiar with him. He was bassist for Talas, Mr. Big, and David Lee Roth. He is the bass player for a jazz/rock band Niacin. Not too much like Rush but still a good bassist.
I think that another good band with good bass would be King's X. Dug Pinnick sings and plays bass for them. His solo work and side project work in bands like Supershine and Poundhound is more funky .
