1. The topic was about "prog metal subcategories."  Really, it doesn't need to be divided down any further.

2. This was a form of sarcasm in order to show that a lot of people are not making their original mark in prog metal anymore (Darkwater, Heart of Sun)

3. I have NO hate towards Dream Theater.  I love them.

4. Thread hijacking is not the appropriate term as much as humoring things up.

The thread is about how the current category of prog metal could be divided into smaller sections.

Exactly. We'll let you know as soon as we're certain what exactly will be done, and when.

In my opinion there should be a seperate category for technical metal. Bands like Spiral Architect, cynic, atheist, and meshuggah should be placed in there. But it is easier the way it is.


i will exhaust my opinions on genres in prog metal:

prog metal :

the classic stuff. Dream theater, Pain of salvation, IQuuensryche, Fates Warning, Iron Maiden. Many genre influences but firmly rooted in metal primarily of the 1980s wave of Brititsh Metal.

progressive power metal:

Bands like Kamelot, Pyramaze, Blind Guardian, and Rhapsody of fire. Hugely influenced by Iron Maiden, Queensryche, or Fates Warning. Big emphasis in either folk or classical music, paired with power metal.

prog death metal:

Opeth, Death, Quo Vadis, Suffocation, and Nile are big bands in the genre. Brutal, yet melodic at times with an emphasis on Speed and solo work. Technical , but not exactly extreme.

prog thrash metal

Martyr, Believer, Mekong Delta, Watchtower, Pestilence are names in the genre. Thrash metal with a different approach that focuses on clever songwriting and melodic guitar work rather than just all out speed.

avant garde metal

Canvas Solaris, Unexpect, Behold the Arctopus, Kayo Dot, and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are all unique bands that push the limits of metal as well as prog. Not recommended for first time listeners of either genre.

technical metal ( in all its forms)

Twisted into Form, Atheist, Cynic, Meshuggah, Spiral Architect, Gojira and others are bands that play outlandish metal yet still keep some sense of either melody or atmosphere (or both) in their music.
