Mind you I do get a bit narked about veggies. If I invite a veggie to a meal I either have to make a special meal for them or go veggie myself. If you go to a veggie for a meal you normally have to eat what they do.
I know a few veggies who drink milk (usually cows). Obviously casting a blind eye to the fact that for a cow to produce milk it has to have a calf - which ends up as veal. |
I absolutely agree with moderation. Our culture is meat-crazy, more than is necessary for a healthy diet. I remember hearing a statistic like it would take 1.3 Europes to produce the grain necessary to feed all of Britains meat live-stock. It's crazy.
And yes, it annoys the hell out of me when people act very moralistic on animal rights, then drink milk from cow's with it's calves taken away, or eat an endangered fish species without caring.
And to the guy who said how is eating a living fruit any different to eating meat? That's the whole freaking point of fruit! To be eaten and spread the seeds.

Hmm, that cat looks really delicious.

Many religious folk would argue that the purpose of non-human animals is also to be eaten by us.

Because this is a "vegatarian" thread, I won't waste any time with my opinions and philosophies, but I would like to express my admiration for those who express empathy for our planet's beautiful creatures and have the self-control and strength not to partake in any activity that harms of uses them as resources (in other words, "Vegan"); my only issue is with those who seem to go about it as a fashion or as if it is a more healthy choice (a vegetarian diet is NOT automatically a better choice than an omnivorous one....but there are many that would unflinchingly have you believe it is, no matter what the circumstance)....so anyway, I have much respect for anyone who posses a moral stance and has the strength to act on it in a world that can make it quite difficult.

The space it takes to raise animals and don't forget the water it takes to keep them alive is a big concern. Doctors say 3-4 oz of any size portion of meat is enough. These huge 12oz steaks and half pound burgers are too much. Not only are they bad for your heart but you have to raise more cows to replace what you ate. If everyone would cut back their portions there would be less need of factory type of livestock production and more land to do other things with and more fresh water is a good thing as well. Plus it would reduce methane gas as well.
So I say eat meat just eat less of it. And eat more chicken and turkey they take up less land as well. I would say fish too but it is just so expensive.

I tried it .... for two of the most painful weeks of my life some years
back.... I can live without meat ..well.. I would miss sausage
for sure hahha... but my wife kept feeding me canned veggies.
Needless to say....I gave in to my carnivorous nature
and never wanted to see another can of vegetables again

Right on, fellow vegetarian!
I wholeheartedly agree with you on the smoking issue, too. I can't stand it personally, though I must admit I enjoy a good beer (sorry!)
I don't see why the music of my choice always should have to be associated with hippies and the like.
By the way, what's wrong with being a girl and vegetarian?

Those people would also argue that the world is only 7000 years old.
If the purpose ofnon-human animals was to be eaten by us, why would there be so many animals we don't eat? Why would there be animals in places humans don't/didn't even live or go to? That's an incredibly arrogant vew of nature.
Eating the seeds obviously has a purpose to the plant because it is how it passes its genes to the next generation, what the hell benefit is there to the animnals of being eaten by humans?

Plants don't have brains. They are not sentient beings. I do eat dairy (organic), but no beings have to end their lives in order for me to have a delicious meal.

^ You just reminded me of a new trend of making cheese out of mother's milk. That's not a far cry away from cannibalism, and I think it's more than a bit weird.

Why is that? Mother's milk is INTENDED for our consumption.

What did I say which implied plants had brains?
I said dairy farming is cruel, and cows are compassionate beings.

That was just to expand on what you were saying. People often use the argument that plants are also alive.
