How often have you seen Rush in concert and who have you seen open for them?
My first concert for them was the Presto tour. I am pretty certain that I have seen them on every tour through Detroit since then. I am thinking that this Snakes and Arrows tour was either the 7th or 8th time that I have seen them. I usually see them at the outdoor arena in Clarkston, Michigan called DTE Energy (formerly Pine Knob). I have also seen them a couple of times at the Palace of Auburn Hills. One day I think that it would be cool to see them play in their hometown of Toronto. As of yet that hasn't happened. I know that they will be there in a couple of weeks but I am not able to make it.
One of the reasons I am asking this is that I can't remember who I have seen open for them. I remember Primus opening for them (Primus sucks!!!) and Eric Johnson opening for them, each one time, and that it is all that I can remember. I know that in recent years they have been opening for themselves, as I like to joke. The one tour they started with a first set of playing 2112 in its entirety and then mostly other older songs; their second set consisted of all of their newer material, so I joked that the older Rush was opening for the newer Rush.
I think that it would have been really cool to have seen them when they had Saga or Marillion opening for them. I hadn't even heard of either of these bands until about 3 years ago and therefore missed out many years of listening to great tunes, and now neither of those bands ever tour the United States anymore. I don't know if Saga even plays in the U.S. and Marillion seems to only play one off shows, or the Marillion Trio show (I forget what they termed it), but I don't think that they have made it to Michigan.

I have seen Rush 7 times (make that 8 next saturday!), six in Montreal and one in Toronto :
Presto Tour : Voivod as an opening act (Great evening!!!)
Roll the Bones Tour : Doughboys (not so great evening)
Counterparts Tour : Andy Curran
Test for Echo Tour : No opening act
Vapor Trails (in Toronto) : No opening act
Vapor Trails (Montreal) : No opening act
R30 : No opening act

I know that I didn't see Voivod, Doughboys, or Andy Curran. The only one that I am familiar with is Voivod. I like their middle period of albums, which were quite progressive.
I turned one vacation trip to Toronto into a Rush pilgrimage (probably 14 or 15 years ago). I walked about 2 miles (or in Canadian speak, about 4 kilometres) from my hotel to Anthem Records. I guess I thought that I would go there and for some reason run in to the guys from Rush, who had nothing better to do but hang out at Anthem Records. I also went to both Hard Rock Cafes in Toronto to see the Rush gear that I just knew that they would have on display. Imagine my shock when I asked where the Rush gear was at the one Hard Rock Cafe, and the response was "Who?". They didn't have anything. The other Hard Rock Cafe had a Moving Pictures gold record on the wall, but that was it. Quite disappointing.
Two years ago when I was in Toronto, I walked out of the Eaton Center mall and was waiting for the light to turn green so I could cross the street to go to the half-off ticket store. While I was waiting, a group of 6 people walked up, all wearing Rush t-shirts. I asked what was going on, and it turned out it was the weekend of Rush-con. Needless to say I wanted to drop everything and join in on those festivities, but I was overruled.

When they played with Rush, they had just released Nothingface, and they were amazing. Also saw them live with Anthrax and White Zombie a few years later, in support of their Outer Limits album.
Voivod was one of the very few 100% original bands ever... and they're from Québec !!! Makes me proud. They opened up the doors for so many other bands, and showed that you could be original AND successful while remaining true to themselves. They were models in my teens along with Rush.

I definitely like Nothingface, Angel Rat (my favorite), and the Outer Limits. Their prior albums Rrroooaaarrrr and Dimension Hatross were OK, but a bit heavy for my tastes. The same with Negatron, which I didn't like all that much either. I don't believe that I have heard anything that they did since then. Is Jason Newsted still playing with them, or was that a one-time thing?

He's still there, though without Piggy...
They will release another posthumous album with the tracks Piggy left in his laptop before his death. Katorz was good, and so was Voivod. Both albums were released after Snake reunited with the band. Definitely Voivod, only a bit more accessible.
As for the Eric Forrest period, they were a lot heavier, I agree, with Negatron being a step behind Phobos. Phobos was a lot more experimental and dark (and heavy), but it is a great album nonetheless.

Enjoy the shows!!!! I have to wait until September 30th for Genesis, but I am definitely looking forward to it. For the most part I have heard good to great reviews. The only negative being Invisible Touch, and since I don't mind that song, it isn't a negative for me.
As far as Rush goes, I am certainly interested in seeing the setlist to see if they did anything different at your show then they did here at the Detroit show. At any rate have a great proggin' weekend.

I still intend to go and see them in Milan on Oct 23, unless something else comes up. It seems the show is really worth seeing, and I really loved their latest album. Then, I have very fond memories of the first time I saw them, in 2004 - even though it was a very difficult time in my life.

Well, if you want the truth, a few days before I saw Rush I had been told that my mother was probably going to die soon... As she was the only person who really loved me at the time, I was devastated, though I clung to hope for the next two or so months. Nevertheless, I managed to enjoy the concert immensely. The power of music!

First of all, the video introduction to each set were hilarious. Alex waking up after having a nightmare about snakes, prompts his wife to wake up and reassure him, only to find Neil waking up beside him, both screaming in horror. Geddy was being forced onto the stage by a Scottish version of himself.
As you can see, they took out a few obscure numbers, and these were definitely the concert's highlights (along with S&A songs). Digital Man was a pleasure to hear live, Entre Nous was such a surprise but fits in so well in the Snakes and Arrows context they had to play it (to my delight), Mission was poignant and wonderful as always, Circumstances is a song I ALWAYS wanted to hear live, and it rocked like hell, Between the Wheels is probably better live than on G.U.P., and Witch Hunt was so, so great.
They also played a lot of stuff from S&A, and let me tell you, that stuff is amazing in a live environment. I would have prefered Good News First instead of The Larger Bowl though. The crowd reacted really well to songs from S&A. I would also have prefered ANY song instead of Summertime Blues (I read they alternate between this one and Distant Early Warning).
And 4 instrumentals... could we ask for more ? I don't think so. It was as expected, an amazing concert. Rush ALWAYS deliver, period.
As for Rush's future, I sincerely hope they come out with a new album before 2010, and I can only dream Steven Wilson will produce it.

I heard a ROIO of the Altanta show. It sounded amazing. I really am bummed I didn't catch them this tour. From all I have read, they really seem to be outdoing themselves on tour this time.
