Always had special enthusiasm about Fierabracci and Gambale, two amazing improvisers in their own right. Still a long way to beat the best bassist I'd heard in my life, the late Nico Assumpção who was not as known as he should be outside Brazil, if only for collaborations with Larry Coryell, Wayne Shorter, etc.. Gambale is just amazing, right up with the best guitar improvisers in the vein of Bireli Lagrene

Not come across Nico Assumpção but currently playing a Brazilian album, that by pure luck I came up 2nd hand locally: Cheiro De Vida's Vivo 1988 - mean slap bass player in Andre Gomes

It has needed a second hearing for me to appreciate the subleties of this recording. My first session indicated a recording that started with intelligent jazz metal (indeed semi-math rock  in parts), and as it  moved through to later tracks, the Indian influences became increasingly strong and equally weighted. However,  with the second listen and I have found the Indian rhythms are more obvious from the very start.
 
This continues in the tradition of experimental fusions that Hellborg started his solo career off with the DEM Records releases from the 80's, where very little seems off-limits to Hellborg wrt cross-pollenation. In particular the very heavy jazz fusion of e (predating Niacin by several years), and Shining path's No Other Worlds, and of course more recently the Indo jazz fusion of Icon, Paris, etc.  are the precursors to Art Metal, although clearly the music isn't stuck in the 90's. Anders Johansson continues to impress by being one of the most intelligent metal drummers around, but here again he demonstrates great sympathy with percussionists, particularly those using eastern rhythms, (as previously heard on  his album Red Shift). And I have to say a welcome back to Jens Johansson - great to hear him away from Stratovarious. This is record that will need several more hearings for me to more fully appreciate it, but already its complexity of arrangement, the use of light and heavy, abrupt change in song tell me this maintains Hellborg (and Co.) usual high standard of expermental jazz fusion albums.
 
As  an important footnote, I think having seen
 
 
John McLaughlin, S. Ganesh Vinayakram have provided some considerable insights into what Hellborg and Selvaganash are doing in the company of proven metal rock masters of the Johansson brothers and Mattias IA Eklundh.

With about 5 hours of being stuck in a car today gave me a lot of time to concentrate on 3 albums - and they are the best jazz fusion I've heard this year:

Art Metal: Jonas Hellborg - a slow burner but at  the fifth play edging out as my favourite for 2007 just ahead of :
Alex Machacek: Improvision
And real excellent surprise is  Bruce Hornsby playing it pretty straight with a real serious jazz rhythm section of Jack DeJohnette and Christian McBribe - a couple tunes there went on repeat play including the title track Camp Meeting.

2007 could be a good year for jazz rock fusion

Back to this album again, increasingly one of my favourites of this decade:
Weinert is a major fusion guitarist, who has taken the Holdsworthian style of play and added something. She is also a rarity, a woman in territory predominantly known for its male guitarists. This album is a superb and of somewhat rare vocal-based jazz fusion, sometimes reminding of the Paul Williams days in  Holdsworth's IOU band.

Well, in the last week in no specific order,

1. Crimson Jazz Trio- Man there's some great playing on this sleeper. Does anybody know if Vol. 2 is ever likely to be released now we've lost the inspiration for the project in Ian Wallace. [ On Jakko Jakszyk's blog ,before IWs passing, he posted that he and Mel Collins were working on their contributions to it, then , of course IW left us, and not surprisingly, there's nothing further on the CJ3 web site either].

2. Headhunters by Herbie - Hadn't heard it for so long and picked up the remastered edition for an insane A$5.00. Great!

3. Aja, Steely Dan - Fresh from seeing them live in Brisbane Aust 2 weeks ago. Fantastic. [ I posted a review of sorts on the 'Non Prog Music ' forum for anyone interested].

P.S. Dick, if you see this, I mentioned there just how impressive Keith Carlock was on drums . We had discuused this on a different thread. He was featured a lot during the concert which is a testament from Walter and Donald to his obvious talents which were well and truly on show.
Looking still the same after all these years...
