After a long time of ranting and raving, its good to see quadrophenia in the top 10.I have probably written several topics on this album, mostly of them before it was even considered in the good company.Oh how it warms my heart to see my fellow proggers embrace this good friend of mine. That was all for now,oh by the way:I TOLD YOU SO.There you goLOL

if it weren't for some morons (sorry) who only rate 1 and 5 stars it would be even higher. i have seen it as high as #7 i think.

but now that u raised awareness there will be even more people who cant bear to see something not really prog rated so high and a lot of bad ratings without reviews will follow. Dead

Perhaps my eyesight is not very goodLOL, but I fail to see "Quadrophenia" in the Top 10... I mean, it used to be there when The Who were added in July, but since then M@x has taken PP/PR albums away from the list. Please, could you tell me where you saw this rating? I checked twice, but didn't see it...

And here's why! ;P It's only natural that people will retaliate against additions they don't agree with through reviews, and it's an option the site presents.

^^^ it seams that The Who appear in the list of Top 100 albums in the top left hand corner of the home page, but not in the top 50, down the right hand side.... I can only assume that one includes PP/PR albums, whereas the other doesn't....Ermm

Retaliating this way is very childish and damaging for the site, as I found out to my dismay yesterday on an Italian prog forum. Personally, if I don't like a band or album, I don't review it, period - I don't give it 1 star just to bring the rating down. Adult people should know better than that.

@Mr Burns: you're perfectly right - "Quadrophenia" is at #10 of the Top 100, while the Top 50 on the home page doesn't show any PP/PR albums. They were taken off the list because they might have been misleading to prog newbies (though I didn't find their presence obnoxious in the least).

It's fine to have a personal guideline for why and what you review, but it's not childish to give negative reviews - it balances the site; I can't accept that it's a damaging thing to criticise or anchor an album you believe has an unwarranted score.

@Laplace: please re-read what you wrote. You used the word "retaliation" against controversial additions - quite different from giving one star to an album we have bought or borrowed, and found out we dislike. Unfortunately, the site gives the option of ratings without reviews, and this is the means many people use to "retaliate".  I think you've been here long enough to have seen it happen.

I probably didn't express myself as well as I could have in the above message, but it was clear I didn't mean, "you shouldn't review albums you dislike". I have as well, but certainly not with the purpose of bringing the rating down. I really don't care what rating an album has: I don't like "Scenes from a Memory", but I'm certainly not starting to give it one star to bring its rating down.

The word "retaliation" reminds me ancient wars, biblical passages, clash of tribes, well, you know all those primitive feelings that unfortunately are still around the modern human beings but we should avoid at the maximum.

Thus here in PA, to retaliate a person, a band or an album due to a controversial addition is more than childish, is primitive.

Yes, that's true.

Even so I think it's part of the same problem, because if someone goes and buys a proto or related album from the chart expecting something progressive and winds up with blues-rock, or folk, or what have you, then they still might be inclined to write a disparaging review - and since most people don't get to influence band additions to the site it's their only recourse. Such a review might look like an attack on the genre team to a member of a genre team, but to everyone else, it's more of a warning that album X may "rock" but it doesn't "prog" or some similar message. Just as a testimony that's more useful to potential buyers than a positive review which brushes over the album's prog content... to me.

People who do that are not justifiable, because it's been repeated over and over again that PP and PR are NOT prog. If some people fail to understand that, it means that either they have trouble in understanding plain concepts such as having been influential or influenced, or that they DON'T WANT to understand such concepts. As to "warnings", the purpose of reviews is precisely that of informing prospective buyers/listeners of the contents of a given album. Using them as a means of protest or whatever is useless, and can only damage the site's credibility.

I really do understand that, and I've avoided reviewing PR/PP for this reason, but people have no other way of registering their objection to new additions and not everyone is as patient as you'd like them to be. Also, since I have been here a while, I've noticed two things, the first being that famous old bands are added because they'll draw more people to the site despite the protests of most of the site's readership, and secondly, if anyone criticizes the addition process itself, the collabs go ballistic, meanwhile, it's bad reviews that are damaging the site's credibility? Basically, what do you expect? ;P

I've actually noticed the most dramatic reactions to non-prog additions come, first of all, from long-time members. I don't recall often seeing people boycott unfavourable additions with 1-star ratings and reviews.

I wonder if I'm one of those people who have gone "ballistic", as you put it. Even if I was, I'd like to remind you that there is a big difference between constructive criticism and gratuitous slurs, insults and name-calling. As to the protests of "most" of the site's readership, I can assure you that, in the case of each and every controversial additions, the people who were in favour of them were as many as those who were against - and I'm talking about ordinary members, not Collabs. I've been here over two years, and still have a reasonably good memory for such things.
