So basically I was FINALLY gonna listen to Aqualung, but I left it at work, and then Heavy Horses kept skipping, so I found myself unwrapping the (recently purchased) Doors album Strange Days. And, first off, holy crap, what an awesometastic album it is. If it's not flawless, it's so close it hurts. Great cover too, really fits the album (in fact, the only other album cover that fits the music so well is Brain Salad Surgery).

So in listening to this thing, I keep coming back to my main concern with the Doors...what the crap are they?!? What genre is this album? You tell me, I have no idea! It's too focused to really be psychedelia, too spooky to be pop, too underdone to be art, and the traces of blooz are too few and far between. It IS kinda headbangin', but hardly enough to be hard rock. It's not depressing exactly, so it ain't mope rock.

Personally, I'd go for "other." I wanted to put in an option, scary rock, since that's what the primary goal of the album is; to unnerve you. At least, that's what it did for me. Honestly. I had a weird dream last night, and I NEVER dream. Freaky man.

Hold on, I think I'm gonna put it on again...hell, it's even got a dumbass, spoken poetry non-song that actually enhances the album! Take THAT Moody Blues!

I say it's psychedelic. The organ, the amazing vocals, the bright distorted guitars, everything! Of course, it's a lot more than only psychedelic, but if you had to pigeon-hole it, I think psychedelia fits it more than anything else.

And besides, is there anything better to call 'When The Music's Over' than the most awesome extended psychedelic jam ever? (Besides 'The End' of course :P)

Glad you like Strange Days, it's one of my favorite too. Simple and slick. I'd call it psychedelic and bluesy, with original accents of pop (as in: songwritten passion and weird poetry).

DUDE! MIDGET ROCK! That little dude with the super model would be proud. Assuming the giant doesn't crush him. Accidentally, of course.

I always thought the doors were biker rock, But I guess they are Psychedelia but not straight psychedelic. Crap I don't either, I just like them.

What?  No category for California Cosmic Casserole?  The Doors were such a unique blend of styles and personalities that they really defy  labeling except that they were most definitely progressive in nature.  Don't overlook the majesty of "Moonlight Drive."

Your reference to "scary rock" could include a lot of Doors as well as: Deep Purple's Child in Time
ELPs Knife Edge
21st Century Schizo dude
Alice Cooper's Killer
lots of Black Sabbath
Interesting category, probably the kind of stuff I liked in juniour high.

As far as the song "When your Strange", I would call that cabaret-rock.

Sometimes you can get hung up on the sub-genre or musical categorizations.  For me all good music in my collection is prog.  And  if it's good music then that's all that matters.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
