Coincidently I have been looking for some world fusion-ish music for the last few weeks, but the world umbrella covers a lot of ground so it is quite hard to know where to start.

Have you heard either (I noticed them on the Crammed label):

- HECTOR ZAZOU With JOHN CALE/DAVID SYLVIAN/BILL LASWELL/RYUICHI SAKAMOTO/LISA GERARD et al - Sahara Blue (Crammed MTM 32/Ryko; Belgium)

-
HAROLD BUDD & HECTOR ZAZOU - Glyph (Crammed MTM 37/Ryko; Belgium)
I have both - I will send some samples within a week if you like. Glyph is quite beautiful - very ambient as I recall [it's been years since i listened]..Do you know Budd? He was in Eno's ambient series. I also ADORE S.B. It's quite funky. It is based on poems by [Arthur] Rimbaud - exceedingly hip [and quite sexy..]! [If you're interested Alucard, just say the word ;)]

re: world/fusion - Both Bill Laswell and Peter Gabriel [who really started the trend here..] are great places to start. Material's work from the 90s [that's Laswell's baby] - such as Hallucination Engine, 7 Souls, etc [I can send some samps here too - give me a bit o' time though..] Gabriel's The Passion is a bit of a masterpiece imo..

I have a lot of crammed stuff - very post-punk in their leanings. is that a style you like BV [I can't recall]? LMK if so and I will suggest a few titles/send some samps [been listening to The Honeymoon Killers a lot lately]. How I came to Crammed: they have released most of Tuxedomoon's work. An all time fave band started on Ralph records [The Residents label] in S.F. in the late 70s. Their early stuff pretty raw/edgy post punk, but their flavour is extremely dark and atmospheric..A friend of mine once said that you should never listen to them first thing in the morning unless your into suicidal moods..

Hope all are well -

BTW Geck0 - are you interested in the Momes? Personally, I think it's really good...[hard to gage via my very eclectic taste I know..;)]

The Momes would be cool, thanks.  I've yet to listen to my Unrest Work & Play album yet though.

Bill Laswell was also in Massacre, if I recall.  Has anyone got their new album?

A positive on the post-punk, I have liked a decent slice of what I have heard. I'm quite sure I have one Material album on the computer, not quite sure which one, sounded kinda funky from memory.

"A friend of mine once said that you should never listen to them first thing in the morning unless your into suicidal moods.."

sounds like my kinda band ;)

I'm obviously slightly familiar with The Honeymoon Killers because of Aksak Maboul, but still have not heard any music. I'm also ok on Budd's works, I don't actually own any albums, but have browse through some of his discography at CD stores.

Now relistening to L'infonie's Volume 3... bloody hell, they must have been on drugs or something... this is from 1969.

Crazy.

I have all their discography, so you'll know what I'll be listening to for the next few days.

No no, I found them all on blogs, if I recall. LOL

Actually, you may have sent Volume 3.  I forget.  All I know is that they're crazy!

By the way, I heard Volume 3 a while back... didn't get on with the bonus material, 'cause I don't speak French, so didn't understand the jokes.

I've got it - recorded live at a couple of festivals, including Roskilde where they were opening for Metallica. It's powerful stuff, but nothing they've done since re forming comes close to the debut album IMO. I'll get round to reviewing it eventually.

^^thanx Claire,I have both records, the Parisian Bibliotheque system  has nearly the entire  Crammed catalogue, 'Les Tueurs De la Lune De Miel' sont excellents another one of my favorite bands on 'Crammed' is  'Minimal Compact' more songoriented post punk like the 'Honeymooners'...

BTW there are two nice compilations to discover the 'Crammed' label, one for World/Fusion (with some un-released 'Akzak Maboul' tracks)

and one for electronic /ambient

if there is interest I can post both in the collab section...

Have the Avant team put thought into adding Ikue Mori to the archives? We all know who she is - mostly because of DNA and her work with Frith and Zorn - but I think her solo work might be just as worthy of a place here. =)

Right now I'm listening to her "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" album and I could argue that it was chamber prog. ;) I also noticed similarities between it and After Dinner or Hoahio, although this CD is a little less gentle than any of Haco's work.

Have you been through this already? actually I sort of want to get involved with the process, if it's possible.

I saw her live w/ DNA at CBGBs back in the day - since my knowledge is spotty ..I recently heard some Death Ambient - rather on the abstract/noise side for my taste, but that does belong in Avant. Does anyone have some samples I could check out? I've got Painted Desert on my "wishlist," but not sure when..

btw way folks - I just sent some Material samples I only meant to send to one person, but I included my whole list. I don't think most of you will be interested in this [except maybe syzygy, who probably already has it] - world influences/touches, but rather on the funk side - so just delete it if..if you do like it though, LMK [I uploaded another, less funk oriented/more world etc]

I may like it, I'll check my inbox later.  Cheers.

Hmm, L'infonie never fail to impress me.  Volume 3333 is maybe not as good as Volume 333, but it's still excellent stuff indeed, bearing in mind it's supposed to be a live recording of the Paix, the main suite on Volume 333, but with Conservatory musicians instead, apparently.

Na Margon "Death's Angel"

It's an obscure Avant-rock band with members from Finland and Sweden that only made one EP (to my knowledge). The first track "Death's Angel" Sounds something like a cross between Univers Zero and Devil Doll, with a taste of Art Zoyd and Änglagård.  Bery dark and brooding.  The following track 'if' continues in the same vein. Female tormented vocals, and a haunting Art Zoyd feel. The third and last track is a melody reversal of the first track  (Death's angel, subconscisous version).

This disc is an absolute  delight  for  those who are into the dark kind of RIO/Avant-rock in the vein of Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Art Bears.

The production and playing is inpeccable, totally awesome.

The disc is on ReR records to my knowledge.

Not sure if I've got that one - Material's discography is pretty big and I've just got a few odds and ends.

Anyway, PLEASE DON"T DELETE IT if you've received it, and don't let mention of words like 'funk' put you off either. I don't think Material are necessarily suitable for inclusion on here, but if you haven't sampled Bill Laswell's RIO/Avant/funk/dub/jazz/world mash ups with Material then your life and music collection are sadly incomplete. After all, the man has played bass with both Fred Frith and John Zorn, whih is surely reason enough to give his music a chance.

Ahem. As you were, everybody...

Incidentally, if anybody has the first Orb remixes collection (Aunty Aubrey's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld) there's a superb 17 minute Orb remix of Material that is one of the 2 or 3 best Orb tracks ever.

Thanks, Rottenhat!
That sound interesting, I'll try and track it down.

To all:
When I have more time, I'll post here some of my recent findings.

Oh, and by the way, I've been in contact with Olive Mess through Myspace and apparentely, they have just recorded their second album and they're looking for a label to release it. I hope they find one soon as I am eager to listen to this album after being captivated by Gramercy.
