I'm a huge Gong fan!
I say Angel's Egg is their best album. The production is tight and the music is top-notch.

I've got a pretty large selection of Gong and family albums. I was a bit of a late convert to them - in the 70s I didn't really get them, but in the 90s for some reason those old albums made a lot more sense.
I like both the Daevid Allen and Pierre Moerlen incarnations for different reasons, although for me the Allen incarnation is the definitive Gong. I like the trilogy, but Camembert Electrique is my favourite Gong album.
I've seen Daevid Allen with the Brainville trio (Allen plus Hugh Hopper and Chris Cutler) twice in the last 12 months and they were excellent on both occasions. When I saw them at the London Borderline club they played for over 2 hours, including some improv from Hopper and Cutler and a hilarious poem about their experiences in Israel from Allen. Daevid Allen is a warm and wonderful performer, and in a small venue he's at his best; he really engages with the audience.

I got the trilogy and Floating Anarchy... very nice stuff. You is my favorite. A bit too happy for me sometimes but masterliness nonetheless.

My question is... is the rest of their material any good? Or did they do three masterpieces, two good albums and the rest a handfull of forgetable albums...? I don´t know why, I get that feeling

I have Angel's Egg and You. They aren't exactly something that I can listen to every day. The silliness kinda gets to me. I'll probably get Flying Teapot eventually just to complete the trilogy, but I can't see myself going beyond that. I like You out of the ones I have heard. It's much more ...musical.... for lack of a better word.

I like Gong a lot, but prefer Pierre Morlein phase. Shamal, Gazeuse, Espresso II and Downwind.
I'm fascinated with percussions and beautiful guitars played by Holdswort and Mick Taylor, even Mike Oldfield on Downwind

The 'trilogy' are great albums but 'Shapeshifter' is a later unsung hero - what an album. Anyone agree? Oh and also, Im not keen of Pierre Moerlen's incarnation of 'Gong' although I appreciate the musicianship. I just don't find them musically interesting.

dunno - haven't heard it yet  - I've got Part 5 of the trillogy - that's very good.
It's not obligatory to like Pierre Moerlen's Gong ... some do, some don't - s'life. *shrug*

I love alll incarnations of Gong, although Pierre Moerlen's Gong can become a bit too "bingely" at times. One has to be in the right mood for it. Some of the very best musicians of prog played in Gong; most notably Pierre Moerlen himself (see my signature pic; he is playing with Brand X there), but also Didier Malherbe and Allan Holdsworth, and Steve Hillage and Mike Howlett of the classic line-up were no slouches either.
The "Shapeshifter" album was indeed a nice comeback..

The Radio Gnome trilogy as well as Camembert Electrique are all brilliant, my favorite is probably You, with CE and Angel's Egg close behind. I like Pierre Moerlen Gong-era, although I prefer the transition album Shamal to Gazeuse and Expresso, which is a bit unusual for most Gong fans.

I do agree SHAPESHIFTER  is an excellent 90s GONG CD, You know what, i thnk i am listening to It more often than the ''classIcs'....... more modern of course ( there is even a techno passage, not too long thanks!) good songs, good energy and still with the spirit of ol'Gong! Daevid ALLEN in fine form!!'

which again raises the question why Daevid Allen is still not int the archives as a solo artist

It certainly was a blast - and certainly from the past!
30 years of floating anarchy...
Almost a contradiction in terms, isn't it...
But
it's been fillumed and recorded on 24 track mobile machine, and having
just finished the Planet Gong mix, I can say it's without doubt a real
stonker...
It'll probably be out in early december...

Actually the first album i got and heard from Gong was "Gazeuse", where the line up was Moerlen, Malherbe and Holdsworth if im not wrong, a great and instrumental album which is very different to the Radio Gnome Trilogy for instance, i strongly recommend it if you wish to explore another incarnation of the band.
