massive bump on the most important thread in existence
Jannick Top isn't listed here and his compilation isn't listed among Magma's albums. Is it worth starting another artist page even though we can't add studio albums to it? He released one single - Utopia Viva - and then later added it to a compilation - Soleil d'Ork - also featuring some alternate studio versions of tracks, including the full version of musique des spheres and a track featuring Blazquiz and Vander. more or less my favourite "album" and it's not even here ;P I'd be happy to write the bio if Top were approved for addition, but I'm sure I wouldn't be at the front of the queue. |

I'm pretty sure he is on our cleared artist list, I know I voted yes for the addition. So I don't see a problem with this.

Hahah....Cheers laplace!...But I was on another board yesterday viewing the 'Videos of your best group sex on public transport' thread which make this one obsolete.
Gotta love the Japanese heh!
Finalised the Nurse With Wound list but as I burned it on 200 anonymous cdrs I don't know which is what. iTunes hasn't got a clue either. Sell your soul for Banten! I did!

good to have you back in style Yuko. Ah good ol Mutant Sounds, never have I seen such an impressive collection. Hehe... does that mean I own your soul Logan, love the album, marvelous jazzy zeuhl. Anyone chanced upon hearing his other two albums Haunted and Gnosis? Should be interesting to hear if they are worth tracking down. We just need one more vote and Paga will be cleared. If anyone is interested in putting together to bio, please feel free to do so and we can slot her in under Zeuhl. laplace feel free to whip up the Top bio when you get sometime. |

Bernard Paganotti is my personal favorite Zeuhl bassist, and Paga shows him in top form. Very similar to Weidorje, only a bit more jazzy.

How about composer/keyboardist Jean-Philippe Goude? He also played in Weidorje, as well as with Richard Pinhas. I've got two fantastic albums by him (find it at you know where).
Jeunes Annees with percussionist Olivier Cole. A fantastic, synthy-zeuhlalbum! Kind of Weidorje sounding, and its made in '75! I might prefer that and his soloalbum Drones from '80 to Paga Group, although I guess nothing is as amazing as Une parcelle d'Urantia. (Patrick Gauthier's Bébé Godzilla is also excellent) I know they are all on some suggestions list here from '04. |

Is this any good?
Jannick Top (aka Jannik, Janik, etc.) was born in Marseille, but moved to Paris after a classical Russian education in piano, cello and the more theoretical side of music, becoming acquainted with many jazz-oriented musicians and recording an album with Troc before joining Magma in 1973. As the Wahrgenuhr, he helped solidify the zeuhl sound both by contributing his unique bass techniques - the trademark heavy distortion, played on a bass guitar tuned as you would a cello - and through compositions of his own, including the cult song "De Futura". Although his tenure with Magma was relatively brief (staying from May '73 until Oct '74, and then returning to record and embark on one last tour) his legacy is stamped all over Zeuhl and continues to influence bands from around the world. Following his departure, Jannick recorded an album with the band Speed Limit, a band made up mostly of Magma alumni and in a similar jazz-rock style. When that project didn't last, he became a sessionist, working his way up the ladder of recognition and eventually recording for various well-known names. Although his musical concerns have taken a turn towards the commercial, Jannick Top has recently guested with Magma, as recorded on Mythes Et Légendes, Volume II. The compilation album, "Soleil d'Ork" is a collection of his solo work recorded between 1974 and '80, some tracks being in collaboration with fellow Magma musicians and other important members of the Paris scene such as Richard Pinhas. The whole album retains a very Kobaian flavour and would be of interest to fans of the Zeuhl movement. Jannick Top owns and runs Utopic Records and maintains an archive of Magma bootlegs. :: also I've heard Paga's "Gnosis" and I thought it was fun. Reminded me more of Zao than anything, ala being more jazz-rock than zeuhl-ish. certainly of a high quality. Edited by laplace - August 08 2007 at 06:46 |

laplace, the bio is great, exactly what we need. Unfortunately I cannot open pages up myself (I need my fifth star to do that) but I will give the heads up to one of the other team members. Once the page is open you can add the albums if you wish.

What about related projects (Vander Top & Utopic sporadic orchestra...)? These may as well be listed under Magma, since most of the players constitute nothing but Magma lineup of the time!!!... Should there be another entry?
P.S: The U.S.O line-up, which is not mentioned in the last link:
Jannick Top Bass
Jean Schultes Drums Christian Vander Drums Kris Stanisnopoulos Percussion Jean-Pierre Sabartet Piano Gérard Bikialo Keyboards Philippe Briche Keyboards Sauveur Malia fret Cello Denis Lable Guitar Josselin Piccende Guitar Georges Gasky Synthesizer Didier Lockwood Violin Michel Ripoche Violin Frédérique Deguenbach, Stella Vander, Martin Toureil Voice Mohamed Larbi Ouchni tunesian Violin Hervé Derien Cello Claude Olmos Guitar (Tracks 3, 5) Michel Graillier Keyboards (Track 4) Klaus Blasquiz Voice (Track 4) |

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!) |

Thanks for the comments on Paga. Have now listened to it and enjoy the second (Mitchinoku) and fourth ("Une Parcelle d'Urantia") immensely. The second track would be excellent on an Eskaton album. I was a bit worried when the male vocals started on "Talk Back." Reminiscent of Gary Numan to me in "Show Town". It has some cheesy 80's New Wavish moments for me, but a very good album on the whole.
Perhaps in two weeks I might attempt a bio of some group since there are a considerable number of Zeuhl and Zeuhlish albums missing from the archives. Edited by Logan - August 08 2007 at 14:36 |

I'm not as keen on Bebe Godzilla, and have yet to hear Drones, but Jeunes Annees is excellent. |

Thought this might interest people...
In the Magma concert at the RIO festival earlier this year, several people mentioned that almost half the concert was devoted to some unheard epic, and of a forth-coming new album (see Chris' and artimid's posts here)... Recently I received word from someone who was at Magma's NEARfest gig that Ëmëhntëht-Rê was performed there. Given that Vander has stated his intentions to finish this piece, could this be the next studio release from the masters of Zeuhl? And given their extensive touring this year, could we be expecting a release in the next year? Was anyone here at the NEARfest concert or anyother Magma gig this year who could confirm hearing a new epic? or has anyone heard similar rumours? |

Last time I saw them was 2 years ago and I'm pretty sure they played it then (can't be sure, was wasted)
Definately remember them sandwiching in Hhai in a 40 minute freak-out

I saw 'em in New York in late June. They played the piece, which does indeed contain Hhai, and then Stella mentioned that it will be their next studio album, some time next year. The piece is great and I am quite psyched to hear a more polished version. |

I really wish they'd recorded a studio version of Theusz Hamtaahk, as the version on Retrospektiw I-II is amazing. It's my favourite Magma track so far.
I hear they do this track live still, so I can only hope they'll record in the studio one day. Edited by Geck0 - August 15 2007 at 19:53 |

^^Magma do indeed still perform that track on occasion, especially during shows that they do the entire Theuz Hamtaak trilogy. Must be one hell of a show to be at....
Anyway, I've got a quick Magma question for the group here: Are Lisa Bois and Lisa Deluxe the same person? Edited by rileydog22 - August 15 2007 at 20:47 |

Thanks for the the info Rileydog, I'm really looking forward to more
material (even when I have atleast half their back catalogue still to
acquire, as well as those dvds that keep coming...)
The only version of Theuz Hamtaak I've heard is the one on the BBC Londres live album. I'd be interested to hear how the finished version sounds on Retrospectiw I-II or the trilogy set. I really enjoy the version of Kohntarkosz (may I say darker sounding than the studio or later live versions?) on the BBC album too, particularly the intense ending which I prefer to the one that became worked into their live material (such as in the 1976 Tolouse concert, or even now) which sounds slightly tacked on to me... edit: Found a link to this site in Yuko's above post: http://www.muzikzeuhl.org/ They mention that the recording sessions for Emehnteht-Re were earlier in the year, and also mention a recording session in April with Christian Vander and Jannick Top (on Jannick Top's new album? - Don't speak french, so I'm just guessing here ). Intriguing.... Edited by Unbeliever - August 16 2007 at 06:03 |

Excellent bio. You didn't mention Johnny Halliday (JT was Halliday's musical director for many years) but that's probably just as well. If you're ready to roll with the addition, pm me (if you haven't sorted it out already) and I'll set it up for you.
I only have the Vander-Top album at the moment; given that it's mostly Top's compositions and he released it, I think that it should be included in his discography rather than Magma's.
