^ "no plastic" means that you'll get the regular CD without the jewel case. You'll get the disc itself, booklet and paper inlay (don't know if this is the right word) ... you just need an empty jewel case to complete the CD. this simply reduces shipping cost.Smile

CDBaby.com is a website which specializes in independent artists ... most albums are self produced by the artists, and most of the money you pay for the albums goes directly to the artists.Smile
I haven't looked at any of the albums in the thread yet, but i have tried some other random samples and.. well... apart from being so EXTREMELY obscure, i think i'll like it :) I'm thinking of ordering a few cheap ones right now, actually...

Hi Evans.
Like Mike said, there are very good albums here, by bands who try to get a break on their own. The obscurity of it doesn't always mean it's not any good.
I'll give you one example - I posted here about an album by a band (or rather side project) called C'est Mortel and this album, is not only an excellent example of progressive rock (or even metal), but unjustifiably unknown and disregarded - http://cdbaby.com/cd/cestmortel

There are more of course.

Like you said, there's this section - http://cdbaby.com/sale which has nice albums for cheap.

I do most of my album purchases online and while this is not my main soruce of purchase (it's usually Greg Walker, Wayside/Cuneiform, Laser's Edge/Ken Golden, Big Balloon which has closed, Kinesis, Of Sound Mind, The End Records, ReR, Indie Jazz and others) but CD Baby is a good place to look for those less exposed musicians/bands. There are good gems to be found.
There's also the convenient genre classification in there which helps scout for music.

Have fun Smile

Wow, thanks for all those other recommendations as well, i once met a guy who told me about Wayside, and i've been meaning to look it up. I'm trying some C'est Mortel right now, and i'll keep them in ming for next time. :)
But, once again, is "without plastic" recommended? Does that mean i will just get the discs with a piece of paper stuck in between or what ?

By the way, what exactly does "no plastic" mean?

# OTHER: PayPal, check, money order, international money order, cash, >chocolate<.

Seriously, what kind of site is this? i feel very compelled to buy from them, if only for the humour that they seem to to possess, but there is nothing there i know or have even heard of!

Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butcher's Ballroom (2006/2007)

Listen to the samples ... an exciting mix of metal, jazz and classical with a heavy dose of humor!

Suspyre - A Great Divide (2007)

Great prog metal released earlier this year - includes a rich variety of styles, from Dream Theater style melodic prog to Symphony X style neoclassical power metal, and some Avant-Garde bits too.

Ambient soul pop with elements of hip hop, jazz and a dash of punk mix it up and flow on this spirited ascension:

Jazz influences combined with a willing mix of the esoteric, metaphysical, folk and soft rock make Crow an eclectic companion:

Now for some retro prog:

Anglagard - Hybris (1992)
Anglagard - Epilog (1994, re-released 2003)

Hybris seems to be permanently out of stock - but you can still listen to the samples.Smile

Hybris is indeed out of stock. Firefly mentioned in the Anglagard track (correctly spelled, unlike mine here) that the band is considering releasing a reprint of the albums not to long from now. Apparently, only 5000 copies of Hybris exist worldwide....

Chrome - Third From the Sun - everyone's favorite space/psych/punk/prog craziness!
http://cdbaby.com/cd/chrome3

Edit: Kudos to Clay Withrow, based on the samples the Dissonanace Rising cd sounds like some quality prog-metal

I've already said I like Astrid Proll a lot, but Cerebus Effect - Acts of Deception is a great album as well, good purchase!

Thanks. Just came in recently, along with MCM - Ritual Factory which I forgot to mention. They are somehow affiliated with the Condition Red album you mentioned, sounded interesting so I grabbed it also.

I know you've mentioned you like Astrid Proll already, but are you still enjoying it?

I'm just curious.  Has it stood the test of time so far?

Cheers.

Check out Aghora "Formless". One of my recent favorites.

The first one, simply titled "Aghora" is nice as well.

I love them!
Good recommendation...I second it!

I'm glad CD Baby expánded, I know them from some time ago but they used to be focussed mostly in New Age, it's goo to find they are bigger and much more interesting.

Mostly because we haven't sold but two CDs. Please check it out friends. It's a travesty that it goes unexplored.

I was going to recommend it myself when I saw this thread.  It really is a great album, hasn't left my regular rotation.
