There's a double hint at Enrico Fermi here. Can it be Quantum Jump?
I'll just assume I am right and will continue with a riddle of mine:

A vowel too much in this lifting machine.

A hop is a jump, so I was thinking Quantum Jump as well.

Looking for lifting machines now....

Yes, it is Kraan. "Kran" is German for "crane".

Ouch. I knew that, but I didn't think of it.... You're getting the hang of this, Eugene.

See it move in all directions before the alphabet begins

Move in all directions -- rays, waves, ripples, circles...

On the other hand, "before the alphabet begins" may mean "before the invention of the alphabet"...

Take the alphabet more literal, and feel free to focus on January 27th... I'm off to bed now.

NICK MASON
the death of thomas crapper

Well, Mozart and Nick Mason share birthday, not only among themselves, but also with me! http://www.progarchives.com/forum/register.asp?FPN=0
Their birthday also is the day Thomas Crapper died. So it is Jan 27th. But what band is that? I have no idea.

Well, I've looked for the name days (in Orthodox tradition, however... or do the two traditions share the same name days?), and this day is the name day for many names, and Orion (I never met anyone with such a name...) is one of them, and there is also a band called Orion in PA...

I still see no other clue than Eugene's guess of Orion....
On a side track: I did notice that on Jan 27th, 1977 the Sex Pistols were thrown out by EMI....

A somewhat crazy guess -- Jethro Tull?????

The alphabet (at least, the Latin one) begins with "A"... Before that point Jethro Tull moved every directions -- blues, folk, hard, symph... (they continued to do so also after "A", though...)

But I'm almost sure this is not the correct answer...

You're right, it's not the correct answer. I'll give you a small hint.

'See' is a letter in the alphabet....

'See' is a letter in the alphabet...

C...

There are two directions from C -- one is to Z and another is to A...

There is a group called Czar in PA, but it has a redundant R at the end...

Just another failure... Ouch ...
