i saw someone mention Taxi Driver in a list
and if it were a few months back, id agree with you...
however since then ive seen the movie prob for the 3rd time (the 1st and 2nd were'nt proper viewings, either i fell asleep or only saw bits)
and i have to say, before i saw it for the 3rd time i was really prolific in my dislike towards it, and my friend loved it and kep telling me it was genius and greatness
but i really have changed my mind towards it, it is actualy quite a decent film, i fell in love with Deniros character and journy, however aliek Blue velet i feel the movie really really really suffers at the hands of the era' it was made, everything about the cultural context of this film is extremly out-dated
sure, theres still hookers, pimps scum and what'not now'a'days, however its in no way acted out or presented as it was in the film, i know it was liek that back in the day, but its just hard to watch at times... especialy some of the dialoge it just feels so simple
if this was made and set in the present day and age, with de Niro still at his prime from when he made this, with the same story and what'not except with an up-dated script, it'd be a masterpiece |
I really don't follow you there. Movies have to be watched within the context of the time they were made in. You can't expect a 70s movie to use techniques that were developed 30 years later. That's like expecting "In the Court of the Crimson King" to sound like an album of today. One of my favourite movies is "M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder", made by Fritz Lang in 1931 and starring Peter Lorre.

Well ya see, what happened with me and Taxi Driver in the first place was that i kept haering all these rave reveiws and people were calling it a masterpiece and one of the greatest movies of all time etc.
so my expectations were high, and i know the movie cant help being made when it was made in the 70's but, a truly great movie/story is a story that can be told without the nessesity of time or any particular era' being a factor,
now, i supose with a movie like Taxi Driver, it needs its era' and tiem its set, because the movies basically based around DeNiro's hate to all the scum in new york, and at that era' in new york thats how it really was...
It just feels like it cant really be a "timeless" classic to me...
Some parts of the movies dialoge feel tooo based on the time the movie was made, however there are loads of parts to it that apply to modern day,
however i understand where your comming from, and agree with you, i guess its just a personal case i have against it... its just somewhat annoying sometimes watching it, it feels like the movies somewhat restricted
but still, its a minimal problem, and doesnt come up too much
**edit**
sorry i just rememberd: i cant believe one of you hated Memento, or think of it as over-rated, to me its in my top 10 movies of all time, such a clever well made movie

Tom Cruise himself is overrated. The only two watchable movies he has been in is A Few Good Men and Rainman and the only reason for those two is because of the superior story, director and brilliant casts around him.
Others mentioned in this thread:
I think Lord of the Rings is brilliant not so much the second Star Wars trilogy or last two matrix films. i like Quadrophenia but hate Tommy. Anything by Mel Brooks and Monty Python (movies) makes me laugh some more than others. The life of Brian and Blazing Saddles are my favorites. PJ's King Kong is far superior to the one made in 1980's. It is much closer to the original. I don't mind movies like the Terminator once in a while. I do like the Jack Ryan series of Hunt for Red October, Patriot games and Clear and Present Danger. Titanic was overrated but very well filmed. Pearl Harbor is one of the worst movies I have ever seen except for about three scenes in the attack sequence. Disney did a pretty good job with The Chronicles of Narnia keeping close to the book. Harry Potter is OK. One movie I have a sentimental value to is Mr Holland's Opus as it recounts the life of a musician who never made it.
My girlfriend is big fan of the old 30's-50's classics with Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck and the like. Some of them are really good.

"Not a huge Forrest Gump fan either. I thought Shawshank Redemption should've won Best Picture that year. Now THAT'S a movie."
Finally, someone who agrees with me. I'll take it further. The only movie I've ever seen that I thought was worse than Gump, was Cabaret back in the '70's.
Gump is beyond stupid, and it spawned too many stupid catch-phrases.
Shawshank Redemption blew it off the screen.

I've not seen it and I don't believe I want to, but "Evan Almighty" looks terrible.

Day of the Dead. I'm not sure if it's usually rated very high, but
compared to "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead" (or just
about any movie, really) it's just awful. If anyone has anything good to say about this movie, I'd be interested in hearing it. For me the best thing is that one of the actors looks a lot like Rowan Atkinson, which is kind of funny.

Not just an overrated movie but a waste of money and time as well:
Sideways.
Waste of time and money to produce.

Hugh Grant...does he play the same role in EVERY film? Anytime I see him in something on TV, he's in a romantic comedy playing a bumbling upper-class Englishman.

firstly, i think Crusie is a great actor, hes been in so many great films, i think most of the time his reputation gets bashed just cos'a his persoanl life
im not in the slightest a fan of Crusie and his persoanl life, but the guy can act
just off the top of my head, hes been in loads of great films...and even the bad films hes in, he usualy puts on a good preformance
Last Samuri
Collateral
Magnolia ( despite the fact you like the movie of not, he was great in it)
The Colour of Money
Jerry Maguire
Rain Man
Eyes Wide Shut
Born on the 4th of July (really hated the movie but he was pretty decent in the role)
and loads more...
And i thought Forest Gump was quality, maybe a lil' too long, but still a pretty great movie... debateable wheater Shawshanks better or worse....id need to see shawshank again

Cinema is overrated in general. I hardly ever bother to watch, much less re-watch, a movie nowadays, commercial, artistic, modern, classic, whatever.
Unless there's some cute gal in it...
But apart from that, music owns cinema in so many ways it's not even funny. So I listen to music, instead.
