Prog-Brazil: Tony Banks was hailed by the serious music press because of the way he played both Mellotron and Hammond organ

SCHICKE FÜHRS & FRÖHLING (SFF) Live 1975Review by erik neuteboom (erik neuteboom)SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Symphonic Prog Expert A few months ago I read about this CD in a review by Roger Silva (thanks!). It was a very short one but the word Mellotron was used several times so I immediately ordered this CD. Well, it is one of the most Mellotron drenched albums I have ever heard and I often got the idea that bands like Anglagard and Anekdoten must have been inspired by this German trio because of the sound of the mighty Trons, incredible! Don't expect elaborate compositions or complex arrangements, the emphasis is on the Mellotron (played by Eduard Schicke and Gerd Fuhrs) featuring wonderful layers, some splendid, very dramatic build-up pieces and bombastic eruptions. The haunting atmosphere in Dialog reminds me of early King Crimson and Seventies Italian prog, very compelling with ominous violin-Mellotron, biting electric guitar and furious drumming. The magnum opus is Modimidofre (almost 30 minutes) delivering excellent mellotron parts although at some moments the music sounds a bit fragmentic. Along the Mellotron (lots of violin but also some majestic choir) we can enjoy keyboards like the Fender Rhodes electric piano and the Moog synthesizer, exciting Fripperian guitar play and adventurous and propulsive drum work. A MUST FOR EVERY TRON-MANIAC BUT THE UNIQUE PROG BY SFF DESERVES MORE ATTENTION! Edited by erik neuteboom - July 21 2007 at 16:46 |

At this moment I am preparing the Anekdoten biography, I found this wonderful picture on their website (http://www.anekdoten.se/web2001/atod/index_atod.htm):

He was listening to the Moody Blues. |

I should imagine that not many people on PAs will remember a British magician (TV celebrity of the 1960s/70s) called David Nixon. Well, apprently he was one of the first 'Tron enthusiasts around.
See this rather amusing demo' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrXtmKGkSa4 Edited by Man Erg - July 25 2007 at 04:31 |

Thank you ;) The M-Tron virtual instrument is absolutely great!! It's difficult not to put mellotron everywhere... (I'm not sure that this sentence is correct in english lol)

The M-Tron is not so expensive but you need a master keyboard, and a computer of course ;) It really worth it because the sounds is really realistic. I have some mellotron sounds in my EMU sound modules but it's cleaner, more digital (it's good too sometimes), but the M-Tron sounds are dirtier like the original ones :) |

The problem is that most Mellotron sounds, like the EMU Vintage keys, sound too clinical, I miss the imperfections (as with the Hammond organ like the key click) that made the Mellotron so legendary and distinctive

Oh yes, it's what I meant by "digital". But the M-Tron has the same imperfections, the sound is dirty like the original, it's great!!
(For the Hammond, the B4 is a great plugin too and you can find the key click you are talking about but it's another topic ;)) |

I have 'played' (I know only a few chords ) with the Hammond XB2, awesome, it appeals to my progrock dreams that I am Keith Emerson

I've got a question for you guys. In the reviews for Pampered Menial by Pavlov's Dog, poeple gush about all the Mellotron on it. I'm not sure exactly where it is, though. Can someone familiar with the album tell me a good example?

For example, you have some mellotron (violins sound) on the chorus of the beautiful "Julia". Another example, just on the beginning of "Late November" or "Song Dance", well, I just played the record and, you have some mellotron everywhere in fact...

Yeh Birotron was a venture between Dave Biro & Wakeman..There were only 30 odd of these ever made before the firm went bust. They worked off what looked to me like a standard 8-track cassette cartridge.I think wakeman had 4 of these at one time but seem to remember a couple getting nicked.I remember seeing some footage of Wakeman at the time of Tormato showing off his new Birotron...I recon there was more chance of an original Mellotron surviving than one of these any way.
