Many possibilities for me since I like basically all nations listed but I'll vote Portugal for 2 reasons:
a) without it I wasn't here and the world should have lost a great prog-fan;
b) Portuguese sailors of the XV and XVI centuries were really the modern argonauts... a tiny country that direct or indirectly was responsible for making one half of the World know the other half (remember that Columbus while an Italian sailing for Spain learned everything about navigation with the Lusitanian cosmographers ).

Italy, for reasons similar to those of Atkingani, and more:
1. without Italy, and mainly Rome, Europe would never have been what it is now 2. Columbus was of Italian decent, so without Italy the America's would not have been discovered, and PA would never have existed 3. Italian cuisine is the root of French cuisine, so no matter how good the latter is, it would not have been there 4. Italians are the people that, as far as I have met people outside my country, know best how to deal with chaos, or lack of control 5. PFM |

Columbus did not discover America and Columbus was not the cause of PA either. |

Not very original of me, but Italy it is. I've been there 6-8 times (I have family there), and I'm always astounded by the fact how open, warm and pleasant the people there are, especially if compared to my own country where people are stiff, cold and cynical (well, for the most part).
Not to mention the beautiful landscapes there or the night life. In Finland, night life essentially means angsty teenagers getting drunk in a bar/park, where as in Italy people (of all ages) seem to gather together just for the fun of it, eating ice creams, watching fireworks etc.. I've actually witnessed this many times in some of these old mountain villages near Rome. I'm obviously exaggerating a little to make my point clear, but you get the picture. The grass is always greener on the other side... Edited by Jimbo - July 29 2007 at 07:34 |

I still have to visit all these countries, so I can fairly say what my favorite.
I actually think I'd like something from everything. But to choose something, at least for this leisure topic, I do imagine living my life in some high cabana up in the Swiss Alps....mmmmmm... |

I have visited every western European country listed and can find something nice to say about all of them
It's difficult to pick one, nigh-on impossible I should add, obviously I love England (and Scotland, Wales is okay to visit but I wouldn't want to live there) and Eire is a good craic but not the place to be if you are impatient, Belgium has great beer and resturants, France is just like England (no - it is really) but with funny accents and great food, Germany is a surprisingly friendly country though not as punctual as they make out , The Dutch are probably my favorite people - their humour is just like mine, Scandinavia has great scenery but is a bit expensive, Spain has scenery, food and heritage, but I will go for Italy for the gastronomy (better than France or Spain IMHO).
Until I visited Italy I would have said that I do not like Italian food at all: pasta is just plain boring to eat - the first mouthful is great, the second is exactly the same, as is the third, fourth, fifth, etc. until the platre is empty - there is no variety and that's dull; Pizza is just cheese on toasted bread and equally as boring to eat. But once I was there I spent 10 days touring Tuscany and never ate pasta or pizza at all - just wonderful, interesting, flavorsome provincial food - Italian Resturants in other countries do Italy a disservice by only serving pasta and pizza.

I voted Hungary. I'm not sure why, I just like it. I like Goulash and Hungarian composers such as Franz Liszt, Bela Bartok and Gyorgy Ligeti. I like their insanely complex Finno-Ugric language. Maybe I'll get to go there some day.
Out of the ones I've actually been to (England, Scotland, Norway, Austria, Italy) it's a very tough call, but probably Austria. Edited by thellama73 - July 30 2007 at 12:01 |

Of a proud and strong Irish descent, only seperated from the country by a few generations, I have to say Ireland.
From an objective standpoint, out of any European country I've visited it's by far the most beautiful and full of the friendliest people. Also, the food far surpasses any other country's. It's one of the most economically free nations there is, especially in socialist Europe, and their cultural values are of the utmost standards.

Definitely not Spain; I like UK (haven't been there), Italy, France, Switzerland (have been there), the nordic countries; but my favorite for many many reasons is Germany... for personal reasons, for educational reasons, and after visiting it 10 years ago, that opinion was confirmed....
Deutschland !!
