I never thought that jazz improvisation could work in the context of tightly composed prog rock, but I've been impressed with PFM's ability to incorporate it into their songs.

The question is, do they do full blown improvisation during these sections when playing live? Wink

4%20stars Well, this is the reunion between two masterminds Vittorio De Scalzi and Nico Di Palo. 2007 looks like a wonderful year for prog in Italy. I wonder what it will be next.

Concerto Grosso - third act - shows an obvious reference to both the first two Concerto Grosso's (the excellent opener "The Knowledge (Overture) shows it clearly, especially for the first one). The baroque orchestra and sound is the cornerstone upon which all the tracks' selection is based. Harder and softer moments alternates with a more relevant role for delicate and romantic interludes. I was really astonished and enthousiast since the very first listening 'cause I couldn't even imagine such a high standard of quality. Classic New Trolls have returned!

People, believe in me, you have to try the couple "The Season Of Hope (Piano Preludio)" and "Simply Angels (Suite)"...well, that's wonderful, in the best New Trolls tradition.

Excellent also the vocal richness, thanks to the help of a certain Shel Shapiro (leader of the beat italian band "Rokes") and his deep and warm voice and soprano Madelyn Monti.

A new gem.

5%20stars My reviews are produced ising these releases: "Vol. 1" from a sopecial edition for "Panorama", Italian weekly by BMG Ricordi; "Vol. 2" 24 bit digital remastering by BMG Ricordi 74321 766112

Ratings: "Vol.1": 9/10; Vol. 2": 9/10

Common review:

These two live album are an important point of reference in the discography of both artists. They are composed from only Fabrizio De André's songs and the PFM accompaines only (besides to do the arrangiements). Certainly to cite a song with respect to another one would be necessary acquitance the music of De André. For who it does not know it can play it just to indicate its music like Folk or Folk Rock. Is, nevertheless, a Folk that looks at a lot to the Rock version, without to be it. The lyrics thake cue from situations that all we live (or could live). Said this should say that the presence of the PFM not totally these bring songs in the world of the Prog. Nevertheless in the first live we should note a simple but powerful version of the evergreen "Bocca Di Rosa". Besides attractive: "Un Giudice", "La Guerra Di Piero", "La Canzone Di Marinella" and "Amico Fragile". The "Vol. 2" (gone out after the enormous success of the first live, that the in origin is not the "Vol. 1" because not having expected the "Vol. 2") is perhaps more solid and the memorable songs are pratically all, also "Presentazione" where comes presented the band.

Conclusions of "Vol.1":

"Vol. 1" (Like today is called between the fans, even if improperly) is an album where the PFM have an high role because is more Rock (for arrangements). Certainly is very important in the constructions of 80's PFM style (Jazzy Folk POP). Surely is important also because today the PFM played a concerts in memory of Fabrizio De André. Besides this live album marks the true end of 70' s RPI. Without regretted and without moanings.

Conclusions of "Vol.2":

"Vol. 2", recorded in the same concerts of "Vol. 1" and gone ou with the enormous success of "Vol.1" is more a Fabrizio De André live album because except in "Avventura A Durango" the role of PFM is more paraded, also because the songs don't allow other that this. So, in this manner, the songs are more Folk Rock and more emotionals that the songs of "Vol. 1". In every case all 18 songs of these two live are beautiful and evergreen of Faber. And the PFM helped a lot.

4%20stars My review is produced using this release: AMS/ BTF AMS 118 CD

Rating: 7/10

Well "Il Grande Gioco" is a strange album. Isn't Prog because is a clear example of Song songwriter album. But proper because is a band album and because is more adventurous this is a really diffult album for a just classification. Is a guitar oriented POP album, clear but a minimum of Prog is present. The songs are very simple but the mood isn't POP. This because the use of instruments (flute, for example) the drums with various fill and, in general, the arrangements aren't banals. But "Il Grande Gioco" remains a very good album and the voice of Maurizio Rota is remarkable.

One of the more POP album in the 70's Italian Prog scene. And one of the more consistent. But in truth is also one of the more POP album of the scene. And, sure, isn't Prog.

P.s.: This album is marketable only to a public follower to the Prog. But if you seek Prog... Here you will not find of it a lot. Vice versa if Banco, New Trolls, Le Orme or PFM in the early 80's plases you this is a really good purchase.

Rating: 7,5/10

Interesting debut album. Also because this is one of the album of the reborn of RPI. "L'Ultimo Viaggio" is penalized from a sound that is poor because the drums is too 80's with a too metallic sound. This fact penalizes the songs that have a very good power. "L'Ultimo Viaggio" is my preferred song. Long, epic (but isn't a suite) "L'Ultimo Viaggio" is a strange mix between Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, New Trolls (more soft) and PFM. All album is so. The atmospheres not explode, however, cause the sound, penalizing ecessively the songs. In general this is, however, an album to possess.

Great debut with a poor sound that penalizes many the songs. In general is one of the albums of the reborn of RPI. And in general is an album to possess.

Great second album. "Dopo L'Infiniti" with two suite is a great album. The sound is good, the mix between Basnco, New Trolls and PFM is more personal and modern. Besides it is also played better respect to "L'Ultimo Viaggio". Extreme good the guitar solo in the second suite and the flute that follows this solo. The first suite "Dopo L'Infinito" is in the same road of "L'Ultimo Viaggio" LP. But "Pianeta Trasparente" is more innovative in the stile because introduces in "Maggio Cosmico" not only a flute and a good guitar solo but in this ballad is present also a sax a la Van Der Graaf Generator. And the intro of the last part "Scomparendo Nell'Infinito" remember me Rovescio Della Medaglia with Biglietto Per L'Inferno develop ("Il Tempo Della Semina" style).

The second attempt to reborn of the RPI. And a fine obscure classic with two great suite. The second suite "Pianeta Trasparente" is born proper for this... For the reborn of RPI. And with the 70's atmosphere hit objective. Higly recommended.

YUGEN — Labirinto d'Acqua
Review by sinkadotentree (john davie)
Prog Reviewer

4%20stars This music is not for the faint of heart, as YUGEN offers up some complex, challanging music that RIO fans will love. There are 14 musicians listed as taking part in this recording, as bands like STORMY SIX,THINKING PLAGUE,PRESENT and others are represented.I found it interesting that the former guitarist for the now disbanded THE NIGHT WATCH is one of the main composers of this work. "Severe Reprimande" is less than a minute long and fills the air with piano melodies. "Catacresi" changes tempos at the drop of the hat.An uptempo collage of sounds comes in before settling right down 2 minutes in. "Omelette Norvegese" is just over a minute of violin and horns. "Corale Mettallurgico" is complex and wild! These guys shift gears more than Mario Andretti did in his prime. There is a spacey and haunting atmosphere 4 minutes in and the song ends with keys and mellotron. "Danse Chirassee(Periode Grecque)" made me say "What the heck ?!" "Brachilogia" is "What the heck ?!" to begin with. This is bombastic and controlled choas. I think they need a new transmission by now! "La Mosca Stregata" is less than a minute of eerie and haunting sounds. "Quando La Morte Mi Colse Nel Sonno" is one of my favourites.Synths and drums lead the way to start with.3 minutes in we get some flute before you would think you were listening to a horror movie soundtrack. The mellotron is incredible here! Drums, synths and mellotron really lead the way on this the longest track on the record. "Skellotron 003" seems like a tip of the hat to MORTE MACABRE as it is a mellotron storm. "Le Rovine Circolari" is the third fantastic song in a row! This one is heavy and dark with percussion and mellotron before drums come in as the pace picks up.These guys have to be from another planet. The last minute of the song is pastoral. "Anastomosi" is a short song of various sounds. "Danze Corazzate" opens with outbreaks of drums and violin as piano arrives 2 minutes in.Mellotron and various sounds follow as well as heavy drums. "Labirinto D'Acqua" is another short tune with slow paced piano and violin melodies. The final song "Incubi Concentrici" opens with piano melodies as drums come in before a minute as the tempo picks up speed. The drums stop as the violin becomes more prominant with piano.Flute comes in 2 1/2 minutes in. As both Avestin and Syzygy have mentioned this is for the adventerous listener who likes some variety. Thanks to Avestin for another great recommendation.

DORACOR — Onirika
Review by Ricochet ("Philip Desmond Halloway")
Special Collaborator Electronic Prog & Art Rock Specialist

3%20stars It is already needless to mention how much Doracor is a band of the modern progressive music; in a more predictable case, who it stands as a band of the modern symphonic interpretation. This year's first new album (cause another one has already been composed and it will be released shortly, making 2007 a sign of interesting moments for Doracor) is one that hardly influences the band's tasteful or rhythmic prog passion, though it could nevertheless be an album to define something. Instead it comes as an album after many others, ones that shined most, others that stood justly by their music - and it brings a modern's time entire profoundness, in a satisfying way. Onirika, straight from the dreams of Doracor, deserves a confidence already formed and tasted, once you are the fan of the band's entire creation. But, without forgetting all these, the new album isn't a stellar, nor a surprising album. The roots of Doracor are felt, indeed, most weakly, since this album has an already evolved taste, but the quality is only at a nice effort of composition, interpretation and progressiveness.

Since it's already forbidden that Onirika might sound like an album defining itself or defining Doracor more than the band's best (and previous) efforts, it is to finally say that the album stands no grand chance, but is perhaps impressive at taste and depth, plus it is nowhere near a most intense effort, yet may be a simpler, casual, prog-trendy absorbing listen, all the way.

The symphonic sextet (with a guest) recreates, with Onirika, some general tastes of what is their art or their "prog dream" - at least the impressiveness of the music may eventually lead to an adequate exclamation that the rich creation is bound to resemble every little powerful prog detail; on the other hand, if not truly liked, the album remains with light or bombastic moments which, one way or another, are way better than expected. Onirika has the likes of a concept-composition, since five considerably epic pieces have sided parts (at least in a reference); but the music isn't that composite and strongly artistic to recreate any concept music, even on the symphonic level.

More fruitful is the entire instrumentality, fixed on classic orientation (it won't be few times this band oscillates between the lost Genesis essence, the neo early movements or the shock of a symphonic sweetener), traditional (or, many, valuable in a rich, but simple sense) interpretations and modern effects, locking up a strong album, at least by its played music. Milton Damia's vocal power is slow, rare and just a bit subtle, always seeming to recreate a Peter Gabriel's tone; Gianna Chillà's vocals remain, to this day, much better. Finally, the "dream" is heavily sustained by integral guitars, of atmospheres, rhythm, acoustic glances and electric glamor and by synthesizers of a healthy movement (and a loud frivolity, whenever art is always searched and rarely discovered), by special signs and drops, which form the entire symphonic modern taste, but also forget about words and orientations, and interpret instead richness' best chance (saxophone and violin, among the best "effects").

The music can't, finally, say things better than already hinted: the album is strong and healthy, but not extraordinary. Most of the five part's grand scent invites the listener to a world of dream, of power, of substance and mist. The strong and dynamic parts alternate the sloppy and simply smoky slow movements, but the actual combination also bears in mind the natural, the theatrical (new-wave especially) or the artificial values (neo-modern nuances, for sure) of expression. Since this band is from Italy's born softness, I think something qualifies for RPI.

The album is enjoyable, far from pompous and worths an occasional deep spin. Doracor will quite convince through their mature progressive music, since their musical compositions are more and more a constant release, less and less a surprising music.

Well... In truth this is the first album of Jumbo because the debut album is a solo album by Alvaro "Jumbo" Fella. Fella is a gotten angry version of Francesco Di Giacomo (well... like Di Giacomo, Fella is a jumbo man!!!). But the music? Well, I think that the music is a gotten angry version of PFM or Osanna... Or a Just mix between these two bands. "Suite Per Il Sig. K" is a great composition because is a long and mature minimalist heavy Symphonic Italian Prog piece in the vein of Osanna but with a simple personal atmospheres. But I prefer the Blues of "Miss Rand" because is a great emotional track. Is emotional also "è Brutto Sentirsi Vecchi" with a great bitter lyrics is a not immediate piece. "Hai Visto..." is, in my opinion, because too Jazzy, thepiece aged more bad in this album.

Sure, "DNA" is a great classic of RPI. I describe it so. Because Certain album go listened to and arrive, in as for words is impossible to describe the emotions that they provoke.

In Pick Up Records (Bassano del grappa, Vicenza) saturday I saw two Cd of this band:

GLI APOSTHOLI

Line up:
Walter Bottazzi (vocals)
Tullio Mazzaretto (guitar)
Gigi Terzo (keyboards)
Ivano Aldighieri (bass)
Roberto Trentin (drums)

Discography:
LP - Un'isola senza sole (Casedil RGRLP 003 - 1972)
LP - Ho smesso di vivere (Delfino - 1979)
CD - Ho smesso di vivere (MP MPRCD 042 - 2002 - reissue of second LP)
CD - Un'isola senza sole (MP MPRCD 051 - 2007 - reissue of first LP)

Another group from Vicenza, active since around 1964, Gli Apostholi released two pop albums with very light prog influences (especially their first); both are very rare and expensive.
It seems that the first album, initially issued in very few copies, was newly recorded by the group in 1983 and pressed in a second issue in 500 copies. The 2007 CD reissue of Un'isola senza sole refers to the 1983 edition.
The group is still active with a five-piece line-up, featuring Paolo Savegnago (vocals), Walter Bottazzi (guitar, vocals), Alcide Ronzani (guitar), Gigi Terzo (keyboards) and Roberto Trentin (drums, vocals).

Oh my god. From the 5th song this is a really masterpiece. But the firsts 4 songs... Well this is the third album by Conqueror and the sole in my possess. But I think that the concept is really good for a Prog masterpiece. Andrea Cortese has wrote its review basing itself on the concept, Erik on the music... I on the emotions. Well... The emotions are good. Yes, the story materializes before our eyes. And the voice of Simona Rigano is perfect to tell the story. Certainly the delicate music is in anthitesis to the dramatically story. But this fact improve the feeling with the story. Because it is true... To times it is better to remember with a prayer (and here there it is they are 13 preyers) an extraordinary man like Ambrogio Fogar And his adventures well-known all over the world.

Quite made Conqueror. Another masterpiece from Italy in this 2007!!!
