Oh man, the new algorithm made Zappa even more prominent on the avant page. :( I vote we move him to Art Rock! Or at least get that individual albums in different genres thing worked out.
Uh, I wish I had something to add, but I can't think of much since I haven't been listening to much music lately.

I have a similar issue about all those Zappa albums taking over the RIO/Avant-Prog page... I'm not sure what we can do though.  I am hoping the eras/schools idea that we put into place will mean we can also sort per era (using the new algorithm).

If not, then I don't know what... in some ways, I agree he could move to Art Rock, as he wasn't purely an avant artist.

Thoughts?

Univers Zero are often cited as being the most innovative RIO band, so why is it I find their debut so boring? To me it's just rather thin-sounding as meaninglessly dissonant. I checked them out because I heard about their influence from Bartok and Messiaen, two of my favourite composers; but to be honest, I'd rather just listen to the real thing rather than this poorly attempted fusion of chamber music and rock.

Are the successors to 1313 more interesting, or is it the same ever-dissonant, uninteresting trash? *holds up flame shield*

Regarding Univers Zero, if you do not like dissonance, you will probably not enjoy them at all.  They tend towards the extremely dark and murky side of chamber rock (hmm, don't they all?).  Anyway, the arguably best release of theirs is "Ceux Du Dehors", it is the culmination of all of their ideas and is rather focused and dense, while being very layered in the instrumentation.....It is my personal favorite, even though those early ones (heresie, 1313, crawling wind) are excellent as well.

I would recommend you check out Thinking Plague, as I like them better than UZ (personally).  They have more guitar work, but be forewarned, it does go rather atonal and dissonant at times, but they are exceptional in the field...they seem to lean more towards rock than UZ as well, for what its worth......if you don't like dissonance, you probably will not like lots of RIO......Wink

and then everyone who hasn' t already:  Rich Woodson's Ellipsis (both albums:  "the nail that stands up gets pounded down, control and resistance) are great examples of controlled chaos with regular helpings of dissonance that is tastey!     Clap

I do like dissonance, if it's carried out well. I'm one of those weirdos that thinks Krimson's "Starless and Bible Black" is one of their best albums. The problem I have with Univers Zero is that in order to create a good album or song that's entirely dissonant, you need to rely on atmosphere rather than nice sounds. Unfortunately, on 1313 no atmosphere is created IMO. Like I said, it's just rather thin-sounding and lacking in substance.

In short, the impression I got off 1313 is that I might as well just listen to actual chamber music; the real deal seems to be much better. However, I guess I shouldn't judge a band by its debut - perhaps I'll check out Heresie, and see if it really stands up to its title of "darkest prog album ever"....and I'll check out that other band you mentioned as well.

I suspect you won't like the other UZ's as well.
Though you might want to try these:
(there are similar and other bands if those please you).

I'm no expert on UZ, by for what it's worth, i partly feel the same way about 1313. It can feel a little dry and immature. I do think that Heresie is a better release though. I still can't get into the last track, but the first two are really good. I get the feeling i would enjoy Ceux Du Dehors and Triomphe Des Mouches much more though, from what i've heard.

They do actually, but these bands seem pretty obscure. Any advice on how to get ahold of any of their albums?

Do you mind shopping online? I can give you links to some European and American online vendors who hold these titles.
Let me know and in the meantime I'll prepare the list in any case (my internet connection is very slow now for some reason and so it'll take me sometime to locate all the links I have in my bookmarks).

I don't mind shopping online, but it may take my parents some convincing before they oblige =P

I see. Well maybe some members here from te UK can give you some record stores which have them (I've read several posts before about stores in the UK, but I don't remember any). Like this famous store -

http://www.ultimathulerecords.com/

And there's also  - http://www.rermegacorp.com

Iin case you do get them convinced, here's one store, which is pretty well known (at least among proggers) in Italy, called BTF:

BTF - http://www.btf.it/

http://musea.musearecords.com where you can get Yugen but now it's out of stock...

DAAU - http://www.radicalduke.com/catalog

All of their albums are expensive usually, except for We Need New Animals which is cheap. You might want to check the first two and the last one. The middle albums are explorative and experiment with other styles (there’s even a hip hop song, which I love). The first is pretty much chamber music (with a rock attitude if that makes sense).

As for Rational Diet, I didn't find any European online vendor who has it, but I am sure there is, just needs looking (googling). But there are several US based stores who do have it (along with Yugen and DAAU), like
Those are the Big names, but there are more lesser known vendors as well.

If I find some European store that has those titles, I'll let you know.

This is definitely very helpful, thanks a lot. I try to only get single albums at a time so I can properly get into them, so I'll start with DAAU's "Domestic Wildlife".

Recent additions in Avant-rock (sorry for slowing down the pace, my job has to come first... LOL):
Ne Zhdali* from Estonia
Triple Zero (000)* from France and related to Shub Niggurath
Salle Gaveau from Japan and who were at the last April RIO festival (thanks to Adam for adding them)

And others of interest are:

And of course, the most important of all - Epica*
(kidding about that last one, of course...)

Nice to see you've not lost your sense of humour, Assaf! LOL

I did start a bio for Afenginn a while back and I'll try and make an effort to finish it soon.  Then I'll add them.

I've also started writing out questions for that future interview.

Well, I am not sure it should be in avant-rock and Adam thinks the same. Unless some other team wants this one (say, Art-Rock for instance), then we'll take them. (we're not saying not prog, just not in avant-rock).

Anyway, anyone can look at our chart here:

great additions. Salle Gaveau look interesting, and I remember searching for information on 000 a few times without much success.
