I disagree with Mr. Corea.  It is Jazz in that it has a jazz elements, but it also has rock elements so its not REALLY jazz then is it?  It is equally Jazz and Rock otherwise it would be known and felt as Jazz or vice versa.  I mean its the same with punk rock, prog rock, rap rock, etc.  Yes it is all rock, but there are other elements involved and so it isn't just rock then is it?  I could make a pizza bagel, but that doesn't mean its actually a pizza.

Smacks of Wynton Marsalis revisionism - he claims jazz is America's classical music, and so when he play it as classical music it ain't jazz? The argument falls apart by the number of jazz musicians who have used all sorts of other musical genres mixed with jazz and called it jazz. Jazz has and always thrives and evolves by having b*****d children - and simply there are probably more sub-genres in jazz than any other form of music.  'Pure jazz' whats that then - what King Oliver played or wrote Scott Joplin wrote or the gospel songs sung in the cotton fields......?  Incorporate Latin in jazz and it aint jazz chick ? A counter arguement is in Brian Glasser's biography of Joe Zawinul, stating rock rock was the last great jazz evolution.

Is a less corrupted form of rock , rock'n'roll, which  grew out of C'n'W hybridised with jumping jive - black jazz dance, which grew out of........................

The only pure form of music is the heart beat , the wind blowing through the trees, wave crashing on the shore.........

A bit sentimental there, Dick, is the first one I read from you, very poeticWink

Anyways I think Nina Simone says something on the same stream "Jazz is a white term used to define Black people. My music is Black Classical Music."

I do to.  Weather Report's first self titled album has always been the basis of my judgement on other jazz artists.  That's my rooted album per say but then again, I haven't listen to jazz or jazz fusion very long.
