Which artist`s record collection would you like to check out?
I`d like to see what Larry Coryell has accumulated over the years. His own recordings reflect so many styles from interpretations of Bop standards to Beatles covers. He`s also explored Classical and ethnic music as well. I recently read an article in "Classic Rock " where Ian Anderson was asked what he had in his collection and he said mostly classical music recordings. Ozzy and Lemmy both like the Beatles. I read somewhere that one of Jan Akkerman`s heroes are ZZ Top. Some don`t even really listen to other music. |

Coincidentally an article in last Saturday's Time colour supplement, in part covered this, talking with the son of James Taylor and Carly Simon. SOmething like 45,000 albums!

Mike Patton's. That would surely be an experience worth the while.
I can imagine there'd be a lot of noise and avant-garde stuff in there, but I've also heard some of his favorite artists are Frank Sinatra and Sigur Rós. |

Mike Portnoy, I have heard he has quite the collection. Arjen Lucaseen also collects rare prog, and Akerfeld has already been mentioned. Im interested to see what the guys from Yes have, I guess I would mostly find Classical and Jazz... but who knows...?

Well El Bothy, I have been on Arjen Lucassen his wonderful 2 level farmhouse for an interview, during that interview I asked him about his personal taste, then he showed us a room that was loaded with LP's (everything from Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Triumvirat and The Beatles), indeed he is a collector of rare albums, he also had a huge video collection with some very rare footage like him playing with Vengeance in The Hague and Barry Hay as special guest (later the famous Golden Earring singer would appear on Ayreon his first album The Final Experiment).

John Zorn apparently nixed his kitchen to store his records. That's enough to hook me!

In past interviews, with Iron Maiden's Steve Harris and Bruce Dickinson, they have both stressed their prog roots and namechecked many classic prog artists - a few of which have tunred up as IM cover versions on b-sides.
Reckon their collections contain a few gems.
I'm sure I read an interview recently that Deep Purple's Ian Gillan, owns quite a few. Around 10-20 thousand I think it was. Imagine that!

I've heard that many famous musicians, when asked about their collection or about their favorite artists, say "I'm too busy making music; I don't have time to listen to other people's records".

I *think* I remember John Lydon saying that once on the radio or TV - but we know that is far from the truth, he just didn't want to admit to it in public until he needed to prove his musical credibility. Any musician who says he never listens to other peoples music is telling great big porkies - of course they are listening to other music.
