I love their album A Natural Disaster. I'm not so fond of their older albums. But true, they should get more public attention than they actually get...

You might be dissapointed if you think they are Prog Metal. Their last albums are not even metal their are atmospheric rock, but don't be fooled their albums are really good. To me they never were progressive. Anyway who cares. |

Relax, dude, I'm teasing you! If that's what you made the thread for, why call it Anathema... Underrated? It could have just been an Anathema appreciation thread. I do see Anathema coming up all over the place on this site, anyway. I thought what I said was perfectly useful. EDIT: As to them being progressive or not, I don't think I would have put them into prog-archives myself, but I do think they make fantastic music, regardless. I was surprised at first that they were included on the site, since most of their stuff sounds to me like ambient doom-metal. But genres are so hard to define. Anathema is a fine band, they certainly deserve more recognition, than they actually get.

Very cool band, although I used to like them more than I do now.
Antimatter is a band in a similar vein. |

i find antimatter a lil too "Alternative" for my taste... nonetheless they are a great band... Anathema on the other hand somehow managed to find a strange balance between so many styles of music that it made it hard to classify them within a certain genre... actually may be that's the reason they're considered "prog" in PA

C'mon mate... the band is absolutely amazing & yet they have no record deal, at least they produce music that is 10 times better than the "music" produced by those on Roadrunner's label

I just could not get into them. I bought 2 of their cds and I made sure they were ones that did not have death metal vocals. Like someone else had said, the whole cd seemed to be a dirge. I need some dynamics.
Roadrunner were cool in the 80's but they lost their way. Unfortunately the music business is a business and they have bills to pay. What I do not like about them has made them successful. I feel your pain though. I have enjoyed bands and cannot figure out why they don't have a deal in the U.S. (back before imports were so cheap) or why they don't have a deal at all. Skyclad comes to mind. |

I just got into this band and I think they're great. Actually, "Parrisiene Moonlight" (Judgment) is playing right now....but they're not infallible. I have this same tendency with Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, etc. I want to believe that everything they do is great. I've been trying to leave that mentality behind, and just discover new music for musics sake, not for the band's sake. |

A few years back I was really into A Fine Day To Exit. Really loved it. Loved it so much in fact that I bothered to burn it as a recommendation for someone, along with a few other albums I also liked at the time. I remembered this a year or 2 later and the person said they hadn't had time to listen to it .
Good, because I chucked it on again and realised how mediocre it actually was. Still couldn't recall a track for the life of me. |

Let me put my thoughts on it.
Being a huge fan of the band since I discovered The Silent Enigma and Eternity (their best IMHO), I own all their albums now and have made my mind about this band a long time ago. Unfortunately, inspiration stops after Judgement, and this is not because of the non-metal sound. It's because of the repetition. A Fine Day to Exit still sounds a bit better than A Natural Disaster, but this latter one is indeed a DISASTER in my opinion. I consider everything from A Silent Enigma to Judgement as at least excellent. And if I 'forgive' them for their earliest releases (being the initial ones, a band progresses through time after all), I can't do the same for their latest two outputs. Seen them live on the 'A Fine Day to Exit' tour, I was somewhat disappointed, with the new tracks sounding so empty on stage. Peace |

indeed underrated. Alt4 and Judgement are one of my favorite albums of all times.
Can´t wait for the new album, it sounds promising.
I would describe them to some1 as Radiohead covering Pink Floyd? Not really that prog for the most part, and often regular song structures, but that doesn´t matter.

A fine band for me. This means I will enjoy listening them if someone will put their CD into player... but I'd seldom do it bt myself.
Yeah... Their first demo An Illiad Of Woes has a really cool name... as well as Crestfallen...

Well, I can't say they are underrated when you look at some great bands that are not even featured in PA, or another ones that don't get a lot of attention, specially, by the way, on the death/doom metal area, and Im pretty sure the same thing happens with another genres.
What I dislike is the kind of attention received by bands such as Sigur Ros, Cult of Luna, goodspeed you black emperor! and other ones that may suggest something different, but not artistically innovating or challenging...
Of course, Anathema should get more credit, I don't know if the same amount on the prog area, but definitely on the metal one..
