I've been liking what I've heard from Zs, and since I can get their debut cheap, I have to ask people who are familiar with them: Does the debut (or their other work if you haven't heard it) get more repetitive than Nobody Wants to Be (on their MySpace)? Because, no offense intended, progreviews described them as "extremely repetitive," (which would be bad for me) but I haven't heard much of that in the songs except Nobody Wants to Be (which isn't too bad).

My recommendation:  Don't get their 2007 album, Arms. It's very minimalistic and theres not a single song like the ones in their myspace or website (freer and not repetitive). It's not a bad thing, really, but since I know that you don't like minimalism that's why I say it.

It's the only album I have from them, since I discovered then some minutes ago before posting them in this thread.

If I discover something similar to them then I'll show it to you.

There are Circle albums there too, you know? Wink

The sad thing is that I can only listen to that stuff with my eyes since I don't have a credit card, but I do read the reviews there and try to find them in some other place. I really wish I had a credit card just for Aquarius Records. I'll go broke in seconds. LOL

My mommy has a credit cardWink
She says she'll buy any music off of anywhere for me, but I have to give her a buck oer CD. Not a bad deal, but I wish I had my own as well.

Or occasionally I'll buy one of those 50 dollar Visa gift card things at a drugstore and use one of those. great invention!Tongue

They're much cheaper used on Amazon.com. I'm confused by Zs (everyone talks about minimalism, but most of what I've heard isn't that minimalistic--Crimson annoys me more, although the Mimesis sample is a bit much and perhaps too spacey), so I'll probably leave them alone for now, even though it's tempting to get an album for $5 total.

Have you guys heard of A? I only listened because they were the first available in the Experimental section, but the samples sounded good. Although listening to them again I'm not so sure..I annoy even myself sometimes. :)

I remember Adam (Black Velvet) talking about them in the post-rock appreciation thread some time ago and I enjoyed their samples, but I didn't explored further.

EDIT:
I just found out that the song Balk from Zs is like a cover of the song So Far from Kraut masters Faust.

I've finally got around to listening to Henry Cow's Leg End and Unrest (I've heard In Praise of Learning before, plus I have Concerts).  Wow!

Unfortunately my family weren't too keen on them... LOL

Now I must purchase the rest of their albums, including the joint album with Slapp Happy.

Hmmm... with Modern composers I tend to listen to albums in close to cronological order. Cage, just a warning if you don't like one album, there is a very good chance you will find enjoy in another.

His first album was in 1939, you might steer clear of this as modern compositions from this early tend to sound somewhat dated, though historically important. So I would suggest Indeterminacy, this is a collaboration with David Tudor [who I'm a great fan] and Variations. Both display invovative performances from the time ['59 and '65]. I might suggest trying to find some samples before purchasing, as this music is certainly an aquired taste.

I have heard of them, but I still have not brought the album [like I said I would, other purchases got in the way]. I too liked the samples. Be asured if you do purchase the album, the packaging should be top notch. There has been a meticulous effort put into play with all the Die Schachtel albums I own [hopefully this one will be the same].

James, LegEnd is probably my favourite album [I have heard] by the band. I'm still yet to hear Concerts, which sounds like a grave omission on my behalf. In time I will most likely churn though all the HC related projects.

John is going to release his new record in September, a collection of  poems by French Poet Paul Verlaine (sung in French) He played me some tunes that sound great. With Karen Mantler on harmonica and nice orchestrations among them a ghostly singing-saw and Jeanne Added on backing vocals.

John appears equally on a French Robert Wyatt tribute, that is coming out soon (John sings ‘Caroline’ with slightly altered lyrics) and approved by RW himself who likes the record.

…another project: French conservatory students recorded music of ‘Henry Cow’ and ‘Hatfield’ together with Hugh Hopper (bass) and John (vocals). They recorded the medley from the Henry Cow live ‘Beautiful as the Moon/ Nirvana For Mice etc. and ‘Mumps’ for the Hatfield part. John told a quite funny anecdote about the recording. The musician who did the  transcriptions  used the Henry Cow live record with all the live-induced tempo shifts, which were  "accurately" written down as ‘accelerando’ on the partition and played exactly the same way by the musicians, also to be released this year

And at last a new project called ‘Maman’ of John (vocals& lyrics) and guitarist Jef Morin with participations by Chris Cutler and Peter Blegvad, the record is on the point of being released 'Maman : In And Out Of Life' atmospheric Trip Hop not unlike ‘Laika’.

Wow Alucard! Sounds wonderful! Make sure to let us know/where we can read it!

As I mentioned in the collabs thread, I've added Korekyojin at last.

Jackson needs to be added to the discography - I don't have it yet and I haven't been able to find the track listing anywhere. If anybody can fill the gap, please do...

BV - the remastered Concerts (Bob Drake working his magic yet again) is a thing of beauty and an essential addition to any RIO collection. Emusic has it as a download, but it's worth buying in its own right - a very nice package, although EM Thomas' brilliant cover art is shrunk to the size of a postage stamp (a biggish stamp, admittedly) more's the pity.
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Robert Wyatt, Gloria Gloom

I agree with Chris, the remastered Concerts is a must!  Lots of juicy live music, including Wyatt and Krause singing together.  Very impressive!

Oh... I will add it to my next ordering list, once my Muffins albums have come in. I will definitely by a hard copy, don't like those mp3 sites. With any luck a store near me might have it in stock.

I listened to a couple of records by Finnish band Wigwam this weekend. Now the 1974 record 'Being' is outstanding...pure RIO, delicate woodwind arrangements reminding  Zappa's Uncle Meat period with Henry Cowish vocal parts. The other Wigwam records I heard so far are also good but in a different style , more blues jazz prog. 'Being' is just a must, interesting lyrics too BTW.
