What are Boredoms like?  What albums would you guys recommend?  

^^^^ Boredoms are like a band that likes to fool around and make music as well. Some of their songs are just plain "wtf?" while others are pretty high on adrenaline. They're very weird and personally I find it hard to describe them (perhaps lack of words in my vocabulary).  Their earlier albums are pretty much like what I said.

Their later releases have more emphasis on rhythm and repetition. They also have a more trippy sound. They're main influence in these albums are definitely krautrock and seeing a Can album as your avatar you might enjoy their later releases more.

Pop Tari and Chocolate Synthesizer are apparently their best from their early, crazy period, and the others are from when they got more spacey. There are some songs on their Myspace, and you can also listen to them on Pandora.com, and Allmusic.com has reviews. I have Chocolate Synthesizer, and it's supposedly their more accessible release, and it's pretty good. I haven't listened to it that much.

Friday the 13th is pretty good, but as I said before, the second time through it was hard for me to listen to it by itself. But it made killer background music. :D

Yesterday I did an interview with John Greaves at his Paris home, and as soon as I have transcribed the tape you will have some nice stories about Henry Cow and more…so already some news :

 

John is going to release his new record in September, a collection of  poems by French Poet Paul Verlaine (sung in French) He played me some tunes that sound great. With Karen Mantler on harmonica and nice orchestrations among them a ghostly singing-saw and Jeanne Added on backing vocals.

 

John appears equally on a French Robert Wyatt tribute, that is coming out soon (John sings ‘Caroline’ with slightly altered lyrics) and approved by RW himself who likes the record.

 

…another project: French conservatory students recorded music of ‘Henry Cow’ and ‘Hatfield’ together with Hugh Hopper (bass) and John (vocals). They recorded the medley from the Henry Cow live ‘Beautiful as the Moon/ Nirvana For Mice etc. and ‘Mumps’ for the Hatfield part. John told a quite funny anecdote about the recording. The musician who did the  transcriptions  used the Henry Cow live record with all the live-induced tempo shifts, which were  "accurately" written down as ‘accelerando’ on the partition and played exactly the same way by the musicians, also to be released this year

 

And at last a new project called ‘Maman’ of John (vocals& lyrics) and guitarist Jef Morin with participations by Chris Cutler and Peter Blegvad, the record is on the point of being released 'Maman : In And Out Of Life' atmospheric Trip Hop not unlike ‘Laika’.
