I'm more worried about Shoji Hano's vocals more than anything. In the album credits it has drums, vocals next to his name. Does anyone know if he was the singer in High Rise or just drums? As I'm not to fond of their vocalist.

"RIO" stands for "Rock in Opposition" - for more information, look it up on the site [someone on the team is working on a more complete def. at the moment, but the one up now should give you an idea.

Not heard any Boredoms yet (although they're in the pipeline), but from what I have read, I'd go for Vision Creation Newsun, Pop Tatari or maybe their most recent one Seadrum/House of Sun.

^^^^ Boredoms are like a band that likes to fool around and make music as well. Some of their songs are just plain "wtf?" while others are pretty high on adrenaline. They're very weird and personally I find it hard to describe them (perhaps lack of words in my vocabulary). Their earlier albums are pretty much like what I said.
Their later releases have more emphasis on rhythm and repetition. They also have a more trippy sound. They're main influence in these albums are definitely krautrock and seeing a Can album as your avatar you might enjoy their later releases more. From the albums I have from them I can recommend: Early material: Chocolate Synthesizers Pop Tatari Later material: Vision Creation Newsun EDIT: I'm not very good at reviewing, but maybe my Boredoms reviews could help you decide what album to get. This reminds me that I haven't reviewed Vision Creation Newsun yet... Edited by chamberry - June 17 2007 at 22:11 |

Pop Tari and Chocolate Synthesizer are apparently their best from their early, crazy period, and the others are from when they got more spacey. There are some songs on their Myspace, and you can also listen to them on Pandora.com, and Allmusic.com has reviews. I have Chocolate Synthesizer, and it's supposedly their more accessible release, and it's pretty good. I haven't listened to it that much. Friday the 13th is pretty good, but as I said before, the second time through it was hard for me to listen to it by itself. But it made killer background music. :D |

Yesterday I did an interview with John Greaves at his John is going to release his new record in September, a collection of poems by French Poet Paul Verlaine (sung in French) He played me some tunes that sound great. With Karen Mantler on harmonica and nice orchestrations among them a ghostly singing-saw and Jeanne Added on backing vocals. John appears equally on a French Robert Wyatt tribute, that is coming out soon (John sings ‘Caroline’ with slightly altered lyrics) and approved by RW himself who likes the record. …another project: French conservatory students recorded music of ‘Henry Cow’ and ‘Hatfield’ together with Hugh Hopper (bass) and John (vocals). They recorded the medley from the Henry Cow live ‘Beautiful as the Moon/ Nirvana For Mice etc. and ‘Mumps’ for the Hatfield part. John told a quite funny anecdote about the recording. The musician who did the transcriptions used the Henry Cow live record with all the live-induced tempo shifts, which were "accurately" written down as ‘accelerando’ on the partition and played exactly the same way by the musicians, also to be released this year And at last a new project called ‘Maman’ of John (vocals& lyrics) and guitarist Jef Morin with participations by Chris Cutler and Peter Blegvad, the record is on the point of being released 'Maman : In And Out Of Life' atmospheric Trip Hop not unlike ‘Laika’. Has anybody here heard ZNR? Their only album, Barricade 3, is quite avant-garde, and several of the pieces would fit quite comfortably on Meet the Residents. I was startled when I found that they aren't on the Archives here.

There's actually a second album, Traite de Mecanique Populaire, which is even better than the first. They will be added, but biographical info and photos are hard to come by.

Excellent news, and those projects sound highly intriguing. I look forward to reading the interview. Incidentally, did you interview him in English or French? When we met him at Carmeaux I got the impression that his French was extremely fluent.

You're one lucky fellow, that's for sure. I wish I was invited round Robert Wyatt's house... I also look forward to reading the interview. Good work! |

Chris,
I did the interview in English, even so Greaves French is excellent (it's easier to transcribe and I don't have to translate everything) BTW seen the lack of infos about 'Barricades' it would be interesting to interview Hector Zazou .
