I don't normally pimp stuff by I was listening to this album be Everything, Now! "Bible Universe" and found this site. They are an Indiana band and sound like Brian Wilson meets Frank Zappa via the Flaming Lips or something like that. Anyway, they have some tracks on their My Space page
http://www.myspace.com/everythingnow
and on my website
http://www.musicalfamilytree.com
which is an archive of quality Indiana music from the past 30 years. Starting with punk through present really. All free with streaming players and history, etc. Check it out since I think you might dig it.

You should have created a topic and put this in either the "Get The Word Out" or "Unsigned Bands" section.

Two albums today:

The first is by  French folk band I added recently called TROISIÈME RIVE  which released one album called Banlieues.
I'll skip the bio I wrote and give you the review written by Oracus (Nikolaos Mavrikakis)

— First review of this album —

4%20stars 4.5 Stars More than an excellent addition to any prog music collection

I don't know why Assaf think that this is not a must have album. I think that Banlieues is brillian melancholic album that will fulfil in maximum your prog folk expectations.

The first think that grab your attention is the wonderful deep and sad voice of Jean- Pierre Balland that reminds me Dominique Le Guennec from Mona Lisa. But Jean-Pierre Balland's voice is softer and even more melancholic. The second wonderful ingredient is the accordion playing that adds a marvelous folky sad feeling in the album. The music is excellent composed and performed and there are not weak points. I must mention the amazing acoustic guitar playing that accompanying the devine voice of Jean-Pierre Balland. The electric guitar playing some wonderfull gentle parts also. For the first time after along time my neck hair stood up after hearing the desperate growl in the end of the title track. Incedible. You have to listen this obscure gem.

I just think it's a very good addition to a prog collection, albeit not a necessary one. Enjoyable, melodic, semi-cheerful semi melancholic with nice accordion that brings to mind la chanson Francaise.

The second album is by American progressive metal/rock band I also added recently called GRAYCEON which released this year their s/t album.
Background:
Grayceon was formed in 2005 by Max Doyle and Zack Farwell from Walken and Jackie Perez Gratz from Amber Asylum but is also involved with and has played with many bands (the list is at the end of this passage). They played together and liked the result and decided to keep on going with it and wrote new material. They recorded a demo in 2006 which they sent to several record companies, finally to catch the attention of Vendlus Records through which they released their first s/t album in March 2007. They have toured the US and Canada with fellows Giant Squid (with which Jackie has played before. Look out for Giant Squid’s page here in PA) and they are planning further tours for the rest of 2007.

I'll give you the two review by Ruben and myself:

GRAYCEON — Grayceon

Review by chamberry (Ruben Dario)
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Psychedelic Prog & Post RockTeams

4%20stars Taking the progressive metal genre one step further.

Grayceon are one of the newer prog acts that came out in these recent years that stay true to the progressive rock sound without doing anything that has been done before. This characteristic reminds me of the symphonic prog band Deluge Grander in the sense that they bring new ideas to the table without alienating the listeners.

This is perhaps the first time I've seen a line-up like this in a prog metal genre. Here we have a trio of guitar, drums and a cello! It may look strange on paper, but the cello adds so much more to the sound that it wouldn't be Grayceon if it didn't had it and more if we're talking about Jackie Perez Gratz who has been in bands like Amber Asylum, Giant Squid and contributed with bands like Neurosis and others. The instruments blend evenly and beautifully to create their eloquent and elegant style of progressive "metal". None of the members try to show off. They sound like a single unit and that's one of the good qualities the band has. Also, they don't use effects of some sorts and this gives the album an organic and concrete feel.

The songs very alot in mood and tempo, but they always have a certain theatric feel thanks to the cello and the wonderful vocal duet of Jackie and guitarist Max Doile. Although the vocal parts aren't the main focus in their music it certainly adds to the overall feel and mood of the album. Their music in the longer songs (3/4 of the whole album) flow smoothly while going through various themes and tempo changes without sounding jagged or pasted. Also, even in their heavier parts these guys still sound bearable for people who don't normally listen to metal, but at the same time they get their feelings across nicely. From the mournful moments with the soft guitar and cello to the rabid moments with the drummer, Zack, giving all he's got., Grayceon has no problem showing us what they want us to see and feel. All is done with a certain finesse to it that makes it even more enjoyable. The highlight of the album is definitely their 20 minute epic (the only word suited to describe this wonderful composition) "Ride". It's really amazing how a simple trio with no more than one instrument each and no effects of sorts can makes this song so colorful and vivid. It's thrilling, full of life, marvelously composed and expressive.

Trying to write their sound in paper isn't an easy task, but the emotions I get while listening to this can be clearly seen. This is easily one of the best releases of this year. People who aren't normally into progressive metal should really give Grayceon a try and also everyone who's looking for the ones stretching progressive rock farther, Grayceon are one of the bands making it happen. I won't give this album a 5 stars now only because for me to give it the highest rating it needs to stand the test of time, but I won't feel bad giving it a 4.9.

Innovation at its finest.

GRAYCEON — Grayceon

Review by avestin (Assaf Vestin)
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Discographies Editor & RIO/Avant Team

4%20stars This album has very quickly leaped into my favourite albums list… Not the typical progressive metal, so don’t be deterred. Read on to know more.

It is thanks to Ruben (Chamberry) that I got to know this band. Listening to their Mysapce samples, I ordered it through The End Records mail order service (The Omega Mail Order) along with their friends and tour mates (and a band that Jackie played with) Giant Squid (look for their band here in PA).

I wish there was something different I could listen to, something to have my brain listen to and get away from all the ruckus of everyday life, the stress and anxieties and drift upwards to some other place… Thankfully, there are bands like Grayceon to help us achieve just that. Obviously there are other great bands that do just that (and I have several favourite bands which so just that), but with Grayceon I get a different experience, a combination of elements from various sounds/influences/sources to create a sound of their own, a marriage of rawness and subtleness, compositions that have freedom to evolve in several directions.

Only 3 musicians here, yet the music in this album is full, rich, filled with a vast array of emotions, delivering mesmerizing musical textures which are at times aggressive and raw and at other times soft and delicate. Grayceon is a talented trio of Jackie Perez Gratz (electric cello, vocals), Zack Farwell (drums) and Max Doyle (guitars, vocals). They have been compared in sound but mostly in spirit to several bands, but it would not do justice with their music to do so, as they manage to be in a position where it’s a difficult task to describe their music. It can be said that it draws influences from several sources/bands, but their sound is all their own.

While only containing four tracks, tracks 1, 3 & 4 are rather lengthy and track 4 can even be considered an epic in length and structure of the track. Track 2 is sort of the antithesis of those other three songs, but it is still very much in line with the album, albeit much heavier, more aggressive and rapid. The other three tracks have a more dominant contemplative spirit, which doesn’t mean it does not get much more energetic throughout the song.

Grayceon offers appealing flavours for different and varying tastes. Some post-rock textures, some sludgy-metal (but of a lighter flavor than others in this field), some good old crunchy riffs of metal (with the occasional drum beat that remind me of the heavier side of metal), and great epics which are amplified in their effect by the magnificent use of the cello by Jackie and the vocal harmonies of Jackie and Max Doyle. The cello and guitar are used both as background and as solo instruments together and alone, which is another interesting aspect of their sound. They have the ability to create compelling music, long epic tracks with mesmerizing textures and vocal harmonies, alternating between a soft sound to a rapid and even raw sounding part in which the drums go wild.

With the tracks in this s/t album, you go on a “Ride” (as is one of the song titles) which passes through different emotional states between tracks and within a track (melancholy, pensive, rage and whatever else the music conjures in your mind). The songs, except for Song For You, start off calmly, with the guitar acoustically feeling the surface, as if testing whether the area is clear and it can begin to get louder, playing seemingly unrelated notes, trying to formulate a tune. And as you listen to the album more times, you realize that it is all pre-thought of, and they pretty much know where they are going, and that these are not totally random played notes, and they lead the way to the main theme or themes (as happens in Ride and Into The Deep). It develops (mostly slowly) into the bigger picture (meaning the main theme of the music) with big emphasis on the melody and the vocals which accompany it at times. This is where the majestic touch is prevalent. If you take Into The Deep, what can be seen as the chorus part is made of the guitar and cello playing together an ascending repetitive pattern later followed by Jackie’s high and delicate voice in a descending pattern that balances the previous part. The guitar has a Crimsonian (as in King Crimson) sound and style here (Red-era) as opposed to the more metallic sound in other parts. I must say this description does not do justice with the music, but it’s the best I can do with my limited verbal skills (or rather lack of them). While the long 3 tracks have this majestic feel when coming to their occasional chorus, Grayceon has a raw and free spirit feel to them, which are probably due to the 3 instrument lineup, their unique sound. This freedom feel, is one attribute I love about their music. I feel that the music is such that it can develop in multiple ways, play in opposite and contradicting manners and cover a vast array of musical “fields”. This is why I am very eager to hear where they will go next in future endeavours. The music goes beyond metal and rock, takes what elements it needs from both and moves on, progresses further. Therefore, the term progressive is most suitable. The end result is compelling, engaging and most of all, beautiful.

The future seems bright for the band, and it is very interesting to hear how their next album will be like. For now, we can rejoice with this excellent release which is more than just an excellent addition to your music and “prog” collection.

Today, I'll mention two bands, of metal flavour, but each with a uniaue sound.
One is in PA and the other not yet.

The first is Greek band DOL AMMAD. I have their 2004 release Star Tales in which they call themselves Electronica Art Metal which is indicative of their sound. A choir of women and men singing in alto, sporano, tenor and bass, accompanied by the band which has both metal and electronics in its sound. Very dynamic and intricate, at times a bit pompous, but well done (there is one song which reminds me of another band which I can't recall now... a power metal band...). In any case, you get a heavy dose of both metal and electronica.

Here's their bio from their website - http://www.dolammad.com/

"DOL AMMAD is the brainchild of composer-keyboardist Thanasis Lightbridge who formed this innovative band in 2000 trying to blend his many influences of electronic, metal and classical music. The result is a highly descriptive, unpredictable and artistic sound that is totally fresh and original. The vocal tasks of DOL AMMAD are taken over by a 12-part classical choir consisting of members of one of Greece’s best youth choirs and are all professional musicians. The band describes itself as “Electronica – Art – Metal” and in 2002 DOL AMMAD were presented and interviewed in the Music University of Thessaloniki Greece for giving birth to a new music genre!

DOL AMMAD released 2 demo CDs in 2001 and 2002 which were incredibly well received by the metal world.

By the end of 2003 and during the first half of 2004, DOL AMMAD arranged and produced their much anticipated debut full album with the inclusion of drummer Alex Holzwarth of RHAPSODY and SIEGES EVEN. The drum recordings took place at the famous “Gate Studio” in Wolfsburg Germany under the production and engineering skills of Sascha Paeth and Olaf Reitmeier.

The rest of the recordings, mixing and mastering took place in Thanasis’ personal project studio “Theeta” in Thessaloniki Greece by him and sound engineer Argy Stream.

The debut DOL AMMAD album is entitled “Star Tales” and features 12 tracks of operatic and progressive fantasy metal lasting 62 minutes.

With a sound reminiscent of AYREON,DOL AMMAD are highly recommended for fans of highly original progressive metal. "

The second band is Stolen Babies. You can listen to them on myspace.
Here's an excerpt of their bio from their website:
"Stolen Babies have been described as playing quirk-goth, prog-pop, metal, cabaret, punk, art-rock, thrash, industrial and "I don't know what the hell fun songs". With an energetic live show, they would just like to think that their music is fun to dance and fall down to."
You can read the rest there.

Hey guys,

This is a recommendation of my album, which may initially turn off most but please first  consider my proposal. I'm about as big a fan of prog rock/metal as anyone so I know what goes into making a great album. I recommend giving "Dissonance Rising" a listen. You may be surprised. It's a small nod to classic prog-rock while at the same time bringing something fresh to the table. If you want to download individual songs to get a taste of the 72-minute concept album then I encourage you to download "Children of Machines", "Of Endings", "Dream for a Prisoner" or "Millions".

Here's a link to the official thread on PA- http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=38118&PID=2514469#2514469

Mods, if this post borders on some policy violation then I apologize. But I simply can't find any other way of getting the word out. And I'd much rather enlighten the members of PA before anyone else. If you guys dig it please respond to the other thread and let me know!

Thanks

Here's a review I made of a promo cd that was sent to me of the band Variant and the album is Beyond Jargon.

Here are two links to read about them and listen to their music:
http://www.myspace.com/musicbyvariant

Variant – Beyond Jargon

This album presents good rock, with progressive tendencies, psychedelic touches which at times evoke a 60’s sound, but without sounding dated or as if they are trying to revive it.

The sound is very clear and “open” if you understand my meaning. Jerry Wengert’s vocals suit the music very well, mostly relaxed, pensive, smooth and soothing even when singing about horrible things the lyrics describe. The musicians are doing their part very well, and do not fall to the trap of trying to show their abilities at the expense of the music.

Each song has a basic theme but they do stir away and introduce variations into each of them, keeping things interesting and this is also where the progressive edge comes in, with for instance the changing time signatures, alternating between different sounding parts, giving way to each musician to have his “say” in the forefront of the song etc.

The lead and rhythm guitars have a lovely crunchy sound, playing psychedelic textures (Carrin’ Carrion for example) but don’t dominate the music and leaving room for all instruments to “express” themselves. At times the guitars have this heavy metal sound (think 70’s heavy rock/metal). You should also take notice of the bass work, which is done in a restrained and adequate fashion, making its presence when needed and retreating a bit thereafter.

The album goes in several directions in terms of style. I already mentioned the psych-rock aspect and the heavy metal parts. There are also songs which have a more modern rock approach (Going). All in all, this is a good mix of old and new, bouncy and tranquil, solo instrument focus and group effort. Each track has its identity and contributes nicely to the flow of this concept album.
However, the main aspect of this album as I see it is creating sound textures and atmospheres which place the listener in a somewhat dark and even weird set. This is not music to dazzle your brains with technical ability, but rather engage it to motion with its often shifting and dynamic nature. Even though there are faster and more energetic parts in the songs, the impression I get of this album is of an album that is more of a laid back album, with a ponderous set of mind which has good “intermissions” in the form of the more rapid and vigorous parts.
My two personal favourite songs here are None So Blind and Going.

A fine debut effort, very well performed, dark with moderation and overall an album with good balance. Recommended

I would like to suggest UK band Spritualized be featured in the reviews, principally on the back of their 1992 debut CD 'Lazer Guided Melodies' which is psychedelic space rock which reminds me of early Floyd. There are some ambient sections but also some guitar-driven rock tracks. One of the highlights is 'Shine a Light' which builds out of an ambient section to a huge wall of sound.
Subsequent works are less prog although 1997's 'Ladies and Geltemen we are Floating In Space' still outprogs OK Computer to my ears.
The music is the work of Jason Pierce, with the remaining line-up changing frequently over the years.
Apologies if the band has been discussed previously , or even discounted as non-prog, but I would be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

I would recommend everyone to check out the band KEKAL (prog/avant-garde metal with electronic influence). They just release a new album (their 6th album) called "The Habit of Fire" and it's a really an AMAZING album not to be missed by prog rock fans, but they are very unknown in the prog scene, due to the fact that they started out as a melodic death metal band and switched direction on 3rd or 4th album.

http://myspace.com/kekal

The profile at Progarchives.com looks a bit old. Hope someone could update it.

Today two recommendations:

The first is a band that I suggest for inclusion in PA and they should be in soon.
It is the French band named Yang which is lead by Frederic L'Epee which you might recognize from... yes, Shylock and Philharmonie.
Let me direct you to some reviews about their only release called A Complex Nature from 2004:
This is one great album, sure to please those who want crunchy guitars and complexity.

The second band I'll mention is one I added today after a long hiatus. It's the American (PA) band The Red Masque
Read here about them and also listen to samples:
They will release a new album this year, towards the fall and I hope to bring you an interview with them later on.

What do these two bands have in common?
Nothing, apart that Yang have a track called Le Masque Rouge/The Red Mask in their album (track 7).

Have a good week.

(Oh, and read the two recent interviews I did with Panzerpappa and Dave Murray - Deserts Of Traun. A coming interview will be with Italian band Gecko's Tear - no relation to James).
