This was unbeknownance [I'm sure this isn't a word] to me, which label is looking at doing this?

I know there was fleeting glimpse of Soliel Zeuhl reissuing Archaia, I'm sure if me rallied hard enough we could get somewhere.

I'm highly doubting we will ever see reissues of the Eider Stellaire albums [unless there is a radical change in heart].

This was unbeknownst [I'm sure this isn't a word] to me, which label is looking at doing this?  In the mailing list of Wayside it was said so. When I get the next one, I'll post it here. This will be a sure purchase (along with Maneige's two first albums being reissued).

Something I forgot about...

Whilst chatting to Alain Lebon of Soleil Zeuhl at the RIO festival, I asked about the 'unreleased' fourth Eider Stellaire album. He had not heared of any unreleased material and suggested it was probably recorded rehersals - the two tracks are just extended versions of tracks on the first album, so i think he was probably right...

He mentioned there is a slight possibility of a second release of Archaia, and also said that Dun - Eros, Potemkine - Triton and Eskaton - Adeur were shortly to be out of print ! He had brought all the copies he had left to the festival and said the masters had been lost making any later reissues unlikely! Cry

I forgot to ask him about that one unheared of band that appeared on that compilation - what was the name? Ehovhe?

Also, he gave me a promotinal copy of Mix City -On Track from his label... This may be a further example of  "Lounge Zeuhl" !

Damn, I'm going to have to try and order those in sometime sooner than I was expecting. Maybe the store down in Melbourne could order them in, they didn't really know anything about Dun when I asked before . How have you enjoyed Triton? iirc you hadn't listened to it much last time we talked.

haha... I remember the parallels to Eider's third album [mainly the lounge Zeuhl connotations>. You listened to it much? Anything worth checking out? Might have to borrow it sometime.

I've yet to hear Dun, so I need that album!  It's not fair.

I do have all of Potemkine's albums, but not on CD, I'll have to give them another listen before deciding how much I need them (well, Triton anyhow).

I only know one Eskaton album too.  These albums  desparately need re-releasing, so it's  a shame the  master tapes have been lost.  Ouch

I was listening to Potemkine last night. Potemkine has an interesting history, started by two brothers inspired by Mahavishnu and the Fusion wave, they were later joined by their other two brothers. Triton features all 4 and contains more leanings to the contemporary classical than fusion, which i personally enjoy more than the fusion/zeuhl of the two EPs Foetus and Mysterie/Rictus, parts of which are included in Triton.

Triton i quite like and is a more contemplative form of zeuhl than the energy driven Eider and Eskaton. Triton has depth and I need to listen to more.... Something I keep finding whenever I put on one of the cd's I acquired at the festival... I played the Slapp Happy/Henry Cow Desperate Straights album for the first time since the train to Paris after the concert and had forgotten how good it was!

Magma is playing in NYC on the 23rd.  What lineup of musicians will I be seeing?

No, they're playing a club in NYC called Club Europa the 23rd.  I guess that means they play the 24th at nextfest.

I've recently gotten a craving for Zeuhl that is still not yet quenchable.  Thanks to most of those blogspot links posted on pg 77 (and http://zeuhlmusic.blogspot.com/), I've been able to satisfy myself.  So far, I've acquired:

Eider Stellaire - I
Eskaton - 4 Visions
Happy Family - Happy Family
Kultivator - Barndomes Stigar
Magma - Kobaia
               - 1001 Degrees
               - MDK
               - Kohntarkoz
               - K.A
               - Live
               and several boots
Mosaic - Ultimatum
Ruins - Pallascthom
            - Symphonica
Shub Niggurath - Les Mort Vonte Vite
                              - (1st cassette)
Weidorje- s/t

Koejihyakkei - Ahngerr Shispa

where should I go next?

Probably my favourite sub-genre. That is a very good start, which covers a lot of ground.

Ok some suggestions for bands you have already listened to.

Eider Stellaire - second album is a must, their third is quality sometime thought of as lounge Zeuhl. There best material comes from their unreleased live material. If you can track it down I think you will be very happy.

Koejihyakkei's 2 (ni) is nearly to the standard of Ahngerr Shispawhere, some rank it as their best.

Magma still has plenty of fine releases for you to check out. Such as:
- Christian Vander - "Wurdah Ïtah"
- Live/Hhaï (Köhntark)
- Retrospektïw I-II
- Theusz Hamtaahk - Trilogie

plus many other live releases.

Next are some other bands you should be checking out if you enjoy the genre.

Potemkine - I would suggest starting with their album Triton, they play a jass-fusion based Zeuhl.

Pseu - A later day Zeuhl album, which relives the glory days. Think a modern day 4 visions.

Archaia - An essentail, through hard to track down. Haunting masterpiece somewhere between Krautrock, electronics, tribal and Zeuhl.

Dun - Everyone I have talked to has been rapt with this album, while the Zeuhl influences are evident, probably closer to the RIO sound.

I think that sound be enough the sink your teeth into for now. If you need any more information on any of these recommendations feel free to PM me.

I managed to acquire Koenjihyakkei's Ni (aka Viva Koenji!) on CD, but have yet to listen to it.  I'm still hopelessy waiting for Angherr Shisspa to turn up in the post... I may have to e-mail about that again.  If it doesn't arrive, I'll get my money back and try and get it elsewhere.

Had much luck with Angherr Shisspa, james? I recently listened to 2[ni] [or whatever other like to call it]. Still need more listens to make concrete comparisions.

Does anyone have a copy of this? I would be very interested in hearing some thoughts, sounds amazing.

Utopic Sporadic Orchestra

This a short article I wrote to inform all the Magma fans of a side-project of Magma that has been rarely discussed:
UTOPIC SPORADIC ORCHESTRA .
Written by Jerome Schmidt
If you know more about it (or better if you have any recording of this), PLEASE, contact me!
Based on infos given by Olivier Fromentin, Jean Martin and Marquee Magazine #048 (one advice: buy it!).

The Utopic Sporadic Orchestra has been founded for just one gig in 1975-1976 for a Jazz Fest (Nancy Jazz Pulsations), that is to say in my hometown, even if I was not yet borned...

It consisted of a huge orchestra which played De Futura during 40 minutes! Wow... From this show, there are only 2 minutes broadcasted on the local TV (which I don't have) and also the complete concert on audio tape but noone has it except the jazz fest chief who doesn't want to give it anyway:(( Believe me, I try to have it but...

So it consisted of the following musicians and the list is REALLY impressive:

Bass
Janick Top (MAGMA)
Marc Berteaux
Tony Bonfils (HAMSA)
Bernard Paganotti (MAGMA)

Contrabass
Didier Levallet (Perception)
Barre Philps

Guitar
V. Raux (HAMSA)
'Gorutz' (MAGMA)
Christian Escoude (CONFLUENCE)
Fred Frith (HENRY COW)

Keyboards
Gerard Bikialo (MAGMA)
Francois Cahen (ZAO)
Michel Graillier (MAGMA)
Siegfried Kessler (PERCEPTION)

Drums
Christian Vander (MAGMA)
Bernar Lubat (pre-Compagnie Lubat)
Andre Ceccarelli (Yvan JULIEN Orchestra)
Pierre Moerrlin (Percussions de STRASBOURG)
Jean-My Truong (ZAO)

Vibraphone
Robert Wood

Violin/cello
Jean Charles Capon (CONFLUENCE)
ZB. NAMYLOWSKI (POLISH ALL STARS)
Claudine Lasserre (QUATUOR MARGAND)
Alto
Francoise Douchet (QUATUOR MARGAND)

Violin
Michele Margand (QUATUOR MARGAND)
Marie-Frabce Viaud (QUATUOR MARGAND)
Didier Lockwood (MAGMA)
