1) Cynic - Mixing jazz, death metal, some middle eastern influences and a whole sh*t ton of virtuosity, Cynic were far and away the ultimate statement prog metal has ever made.
2) Death - The founders of death metal, Death started off as a pretty simple band with some pretty killer riffs. Chuck worked on his playing constantly and as he improved, he used a revolving door line up to keep up with his new skills. By the end of Death's 7 album run, they were playing a very technical brand of prog death metal, and tearing new assholes for chumps and chumpettes everywhere. 3) !T.O.O.H! - The czech are f**king insane. There is no way to describe this music other than bizarre, so I won't even try. Pick up Order and Punishment to hear the most inventive and progressive metal this side of 1994. NOW. 4) Isis 5) Mastodon 6) Opeth 7) Sikth 8) Demilich 9) B...TA 10) Atheist No real order aside from 1-3. |

Prog Metal is something that I am slowly getting into. I like bands like Tool and Opeth a lot and also Green Carnation, Katatonia, Pain of Salvation but any recommendations would be appreciated

I'm pleased at the diversity of bands being mentioned in this thread.
That being said, a couple of bands I don't think anybody's mentioned who I would place in the absolute upper tier of the prog-metal world are Maudlin of the Well and Hammers of Misfortune. The former are as perplexing as they are brilliant and encorperate all kinds of styles into their music, the latter quite simply kick ass. |

Well, I never realised porc tree was a metal band? I have foabp and besides a couple heavier riffs I would never consider them metal.
I listened to some of our samples to pain of salvation, and I must say it sound quite bad? Whats that all about?

With regards to Porcupine Tree 'In Absentia' and especially 'Deadwing' are probably heavier but I dont think I would consider them a prog metal band.

I don't think anybody mentioned To-Mera yet. They're an absolutely great, new band from England, mixing polyrhythmic metal with haunting female vocals.

If you're looking for darker, heavier stuff new Tool and any Opeth kicks ass. New Dream Theater is more metal too than the older stuff in my opinion and rocks hard.
Meshuggah can hit the spot too although occasionally they're a bit much for me to take. Not sure if they're PROG metal but Lamb of God kick serious ass as well and are relatively accessible for casual metal fans. I used to be into Mastodon despite the brutalizing vocals but after seeing them botch live I've lost a certain amount of interest. |

Which song was it? From what I've heard, their oldest stuff("Remission" etc.) is a lot harder/"uglier" than their newer stuff("Leviathan", "Blood Mountain"). I dare say they're perhaps the best prog metal band nowadays. Blood Mountain is nothing short of a masterpiece. |

Is "crap" really the right word to use in this context?

Well, I don't know how you're defining "casual" here (I guess I could be a casual fan of metal, as I don't listen to or like much outside of prog metal), but I don't find Lamb of God the least bit accessible. Their music is way too heavy for my taste, I don't like their lyrics, and their singer sounds awful (this is all just my opinion). And the reason I'm familiar with them is because my brother likes them a lot. |

yeh i guess that was worded poorly...when I think of really difficult metal to listen to, stuff like Nile comes to mind...I hate the whole screaming instead of singing bit, but I think Lamb of God has more to offer than most metal bands I've heard in terms of composition of their songs. there are certain songs that I can't listen to at all but I do enjoy some of their stuff and they put on a great live show minus their alcoholic singer
