Dude, here's one: "Hey, is that your Balzac, or are you just glad to see me?"LOL

SmileDanbo & Dude: Thanks for not getting upset with me for getting serious back there, but prog is thoughtful music.Ermm

Dude: ClapMath or technical knowledge is knowledge too, of course (and still valued). There are many kinds of intelligence; but some (reasoning, communicating, etc.) are becoming more valued than others ("hands on" intelligence, etc.). How many of our kids can realistically expect to make a living as rock stars, or pro athletes?

Humor is the source of happiness and we all need some. Ouch, I just caught my Balzac in the CD Rom drive.

I think it could be time to start a double entendre thread all of its own. This is the 2nd thread I've looked into where the ghosts of Sid James & Kenneth Williams have reared their heads (OOO-EEEER.....)

You know, us progholes may listen to thought provoking, complex musical structures, appreciate good cinema, and spend time reading high quality novels, but give us a knob joke or a fart gag and we're rolling in the ailes....

Nice to know I'm in like minded company

Has anyone else here noticed that today's pop culture is stupifying its fans? By putting out thoughtless mass-produced music, eMpTy V has succeeded in bringing the masses of youths down to the level of conformist thugs! Simply ask any punk what's cool, and he'll say Eminem or some other form of anti-music. Ask him why he (the performer) is cool, and they will tell you it is because everyone is watching them on MTV (Mass-produciton TeleVison) They should notice that the amount of fans says nothing whatsoever about the talent of the musician. Fortunately, I've been able to convert some of the more sensible ones over to prog, but there are still many who believe that there is nothing worthy outside their anti-music. I pity them. Oh wait... I don't.

The problem is, that they are not intelligent enough (or just too lazy to take the time) to understand prog rock. It took some time for me too to appreciate music from Zappa and Beefheart, or Pink Floyd. But it is so rewarding!!!

Danbo, Dude, Jim, et al: The title of this thread no longer suits its subject-matter. This at last leads (perhaps inevitably) to the creation of another Thread, which will grapple with the immortal Frank's big question: Does humour belong in music?

(Apologies offered in advance to the Americans among us for the British spelling of "humour.")

How can you hate Rush? I mean, I understand Geddy's voice and all, but the music? I've heard the Geddy's voice argument so many times from different people and I think it's absurd. The same people listen to Prince or something. I think Rush is probably the most sci-fi oriented but just because they involve space doesn't mean that other bands who don't can't be labelled sci-fi. I tend to regard fantasy and sci-fi in the same category as do many people. As soon as that happens then you get into a whole bunch of other bands like Gentle Giant and Yes and perhaps Led Zeppelin (LOTR allegory is evidence).

Alan Parsons Project has a tonne of sci-fi imagery in their music as does Pink Floyd but I do think Rush takes it.

I also play a D and D card game called Warlord. I used to play Magic the gathering and we'd put on "Tales" or "In the wake of Poseidon" or "Saucerful of Secrets" and have a few games. I hate Magic now. Warlord is where it's at.

It's the same guy. Great minds think alike.

Q: Is this the way to Hampton Court?
A: Yes, but personally I wouldn't wear my jeans that tight!
(OOOhh matron, a bed pan)

Mind you my favourite double entent appeared as a cryptic clue in a Private Eye's crossword: "Listen intently to a physical impossibility"

Anybody know the answer (5,2,4,4)?

Go back to the thread (but it has almost completely unravelled now), wrt to the  most literal interpretation of prog bands/SF creditability - it has to be Hawkwind  surely, because the best selling, British Sci Fi writer Michael Moorcock got very involved with them in the mid 80's, writing and performing with the band, live and on album.
