SOFT MACHINE
![]() CARAVAN was only good the first 4 albums with Richard Sinclair on board; when Pip Pyle tokk contral control, it was utter s@!t
HATFIELD AND THE NORTH were brilliant, but released only 2 albums but so good
GONG is sometimes uneven.
I don't know of a bad ROBERT WYATT album; i am not talking about his political views (which i don't share) but the voice and the music are unique and always of great quality
KEVIN AYERS has not been mentioned on this list>

Out of these, i like the Soft Machine I have heard the most.
Caravan 2nd
Robert Wyatt was the worst for me though, I really disliked Rock Bottom (the one time i was able to sit through it)

I voted for Robert Wyatt, rather than Soft Machine, which may sound surprising, but that's me!
Soft Machine kept more true to his Canterbury roots, whilst Soft Machine leapt headfirst into the realms of jazz rock/fusion, which as much as I love it, isn't really what Cantebury Scene music is. |

NATIONAL HEALTH are definitely the best BAND. Their two studio albums are unmatched in their variety, good humour and musical sophistication. Purely and simply prog at its most colourful!
Of course all this doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the Softs, the Hatfields, Gong or Caravan: all throroughly enjoyable bands (most of the time). Of the Canterbury solo artists, I think Kevin Ayers is the most likable, but Robert Wyatt has produced the greatest masterpieces. Oh, and, by the way:
Febus, don't you enjoy FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT, or even LIVE AT FAIRFIELD HALLS? Edited by fuxi - June 03 2007 at 12:34 |

You mean Pye Hastings. Pip Pyle was the drummer for Hatfield/National Health/early Gong. I find that For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night to be a superb album with a new line-up. It has more of a "rock" feel other then their early jazzier stuff, but it's still Caravan 100%. I also find Cunning Stunts to be a great follow up to that album. It's basically part 2 to For Girls... Oh btw, I voted for Caravan ![]() |

All of the above are very good
I do miss the inclusion of Cos and Picchio dal Pozzo. Picchio dal Pozzo has been my favourite of the last few months. |

Febus, don't you enjoy FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT, or even LIVE AT FAIRFIELD HALLS?[/QUOTE] Nope, i bought ''FOR GIRLS..........'' don't like it, the best part is when they make a cover of Ratledge's soft tune
Yes, pye HASTINGs, not PIP PYLE (rip)....i guess i had a momentary lapse of reason!!
No i don't like the weak , very thin vocals of P. Hastings (Sinclair was the man!)

Precisely because Pye Hastings' vocals are so "thin", I find them moving. On "For Richard", for example...
