With Nemo and Naikaku, this should be quite the show. I'm also interested in those newer bands.
Heard good things about Qoph.

Nik Turner's Space Ritual!

(May 31, 2007)

Storybook Farm will be transported into the realms of inner and outer space on Saturday, September 1, when Nik Turner's Space Ritual takes the stage. Turner is best known as one of the founding members of the seminal British progressive / space rock outfit Hawkwind. Turner was a member of the band during their heyday in the 70's and again in the mid 80's and is responsible for many Hawkwind classics including "Master Of The Universe," "Brainstorm," "Sonic Attack" and "Silver Machine." In 1994 Turner formed Space Ritual for further explorations into space rock. The ProgDay lineup will feature Turner along with ex-Hawkwind member Paul Rudolph (bass and vocals), Mark Powell (guitar), Sam Lohman (drums), and Galaxy Girl (keys and effects). Space Ritual has put out several albums and performed numerous memorable live appearances in the last decade. The band will be releasing a new live DVD entitled "Satiricon" in the near future. Nik Turner's Space Ritual tours mainly in Europe, so this will be a special opportunity for fans in the U.S. to catch a rare stateside appearance. The band will perform a mix of classic Hawkwind and newer material that feature Turner's unique brand of musical mayhem.

Factually inaccurate ....

The name of the band is SPACE RITUAL ... Nik Turner is the prime mover, lead singer and sax/flute player.

Sonic Attack was written by Michael Moorcock; Silver Machine was written by Bob Calvert. Turner performed on them, but was not 'responsible for them'

No he didn't. In 1995 he released an album called 'Nik Turner Space Ritual' which documented his 1994 solo tour of USA. The band SPACE RITUAL was formed in 2000 when it was called The Original Hawkwind Reunion Band, then xHawkwind before becoming Space Ritual after legal action from Dave Brock.

Apart from Turner, this bears no relation to the current line-up of the band: Nik Turner, Mick Slattery, Thomas Crimble , Terry Ollis, Jerry Richards, Sam Ollis, Chris Purdon, and The Fabulous Ms Angel. In other words, if this line-up is correct, then you are NOT getting the real Space Ritual.

Satiricon was released 6 months ago! It is excellent.

.... just goes to show, you can't believe everything the press tell you!

ProgDay was told by the band to bill them as "Nik Turner's Space Ritual."  ProgDay has to assume that Nik knows what he wants the band to be called.

The wording used in the announcement was derived from material in Nik Turner's press kit.

From the press kit:
How could you go wrong with a mighty pack of songs that included all Nik Turner wrote and co-wrote in his Hawkwind heyday like the bizarre 'Sonic Attack,' 'You Shouldn't Do That,' the bluesy 'Orgone Accumulator' and pen-ultimate milestones such as 'Masters of the Universe' and the huge well-known hit that is 'Silver Machine' for the encore.

As someone who isn't a Hawkwind fan, I'm not prepared to discuss Nik's actual contributions to these pieces. and if there are any inaccuracies in the ProgDay announcement they are certainly not intentional.  However, I think the relevant point here is simply that Nik is identified with these tunes and that they will probably be performed at ProgDay.

The date of 1994 was provided by Nik as the beginning of the band.

There are two lineups of the band.  One is made up of UK residents for touring UK and Europe.  The other lineup is made up of US residents for touring the US.

From Nik's site:
"In 1994 Nik formed the band SPACE RITUAL featuring ex-members of Hawkwind. In Europe the touring band featured Terry Ollis, Mick Slattery, Thomas Crimble, Del Dettmar and Dave Anderson, whilst for live work in the USA the band featured the talents of Alan Powell, Del Dettmar and Paul Rudolph and also toured Japan with violinist Simon House."

Though you are of another opinion, Nik seems to feel the US lineup is just as legitimate as the UK lineup.

Sounds more to me like you and Nik need to talk...

ProgDay 2007 Final Lineup!

The ProgDay organization is sad to announce that due to an issue with work permits / passports for playing in the United States, Nik Turner's Space Ritual has cancelled their North American tour that was slated to begin at ProgDay 2007. All other U.S. dates are also cancelled. We were informed of the situation a few days ago. Nik also sends his regrets as he and the band were really looking forward to playing in front of U.S. audiences again.

However, ProgDay is pleased to announce our last two additions to the lineup for 2007.

FROGG CAFÉ - Frogg Café is no stranger to fans of progressive rock, especially those on the east coast. The Froggs have been tearing up the northeast progressive rock circuit for several years to rave reviews. The band appeared at NEARfest in 2005 and is featured on the outstanding DVD from that show released earlier this year. The band's latest release is the two disc live set "The Safenzee Diaries." Frogg Café began their career as a Frank Zappa tribute band, but have morphed their original material over the years to incorporate melodic progressive rock, fusion, improv, and have even been embraced by the jam band crowd. Frogg Café will perform on Saturday, September 1.

THREE - Fresh off their triumphant US tour with Porcupine Tree, Three encompass an accessible brand of progressive rock that both captivates and challenges the listener. Led by singer / songwriter / guitarist Joey Eppard, Three also feature a relentless twin percussion attack that is sure to rock the farm. The band's latest album, "The End Has Begun," was recorded at famed drum virtuoso Jerry Morrota's studio in New York. The album was released in July on Metalblade records to glowing reviews. Three have also done an extensive U.S. tour with Coheed and Cambria and played countless headline shows over the past few years. Porcupine Tree specifically picked Three to be the opening act on their 2007 tour and after seeing them live it is easy to understand why. Three will perform on Sunday, September 2.

Progday takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 1 and 2, at Storybook Farm near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Visit the website at
http://www.progday.com for more details.

Anyone else thinking of attending? I am trying to go, probably on Sept. 1, because that is when Naikaku is playing.

Hi!

Our band Uzva performed at ProgDay last year, and I just wanted to recommend the festival for anyone, who has the chance to go, but is still uncertain!

A great outdoors venue, intimate atmosphere and a bunch of great people (all of them major progheadsClap)!

Don't forget your shades and coolers, it's hot as hell! (At least for FinnLOL). And, of course, the poolparty at the hotel...yay

Good luck for the festival - enjoy! (And greetings to everyone we met last year - wish we were there again!Star)

Lauri / Uzva (Finland)

By the way, a few photos from ProgDay06 at our MySpace-site - check it out!
