Topic: my future band Posted: August 27 2004 at 12:04 |
i so badly want to start making music. i'm brimming with ideas. i'm
learning guitar now but i'm still not good enough to start making what
i want to, yet. i can sing pretty well and am already writing lyrics but
i don't just want to sing. i want to reach those points with my
instrument where all there is is the music and that feeling of being
completely free. when i get reasonably good at guitar (good enough to
not need any more help) i think i'll get piano lessons and eventually
start playing keyboards and organ etc... i just wanna be able to play
it all now *sigh*
one day i'm gonna be in such a great band. just you wait i'll have
influences like Yes, Caravan, Camel, Steve Hillage, Ozric Tentacles,
Nektar, Genesis and all the greatest but i'll definately have a big
personal sound too.
one day

That's really great to hear! Especially that you're so motivated! Most people I know who wanna be in bands, are always keeping it a dream. Me included. Just believe you're gonna do great, and don't lose hope!
What kind of guitar have you got? I play, but am pretty sh*t at it still.
I also really wanna be able to play piano, but I'll never get around to learn it I know myself too well. I'm the most inpatient person ever

If you're a musician, play music and it will all happen! Make that guitar sing - play it like an orchestra and never stop practising - especially the basics
Play your music to others, bearing in mind the all-important phrase "You can please some of the people some of the time..." - but always write what you feel, and try to avoid writing what you think others might want to hear, unless by doing so you'd really annoy someone in your own group.
Lastly, music is a fickle mistress but the payback when you get it makes it worth all the effort!
...or just ignore my demented wafflings and do your own thang - Good Luck!!

My only advice is to embrace your influences and learn from them, but dont try to write songs that 'sound like ..' something else, or are based on something else. Its difficult to be 100% original, but the collective weakness of all the bands I ve been in (drummer) was the songwriting. We always ended up writing songs that sounded like what we were listerning to at the time. It seemed to happen without us thinking about it. Our guitarist was very good, but as writers we were somehow inhibited. Shame, but we had fun anyway
Take the advice of danbo and certif1ed: 'Keep it up' and 'Write what you feel'
All the very best, onslo!

Hey I'm with you buddy. I've been playing piano for 6 or 7 years now and I've already written some songs and sequenced them into midis. (I'm 14)

no no no, i don't intend to try and sound like anyone. i intend to do
what Yes did... to make very uninfluenced music. but i suspect that i
occasionally will create something that resembles some of the mentioned
bands. only since i feel what they play.
also, back in December i had what i would call a spiritual awakening.
so my music would end up being very spiritual and truthful. i'm gonna
try and make my music contain as much energy and truth as possible.
and the guitar i play is the guitar in my signature. an Epiphone ES335
(otherwise known as The Dot). i also have a hand made spanish
classical. oh and someone gave me a Squier Strat for free because they
were left handed (don't ask).
anyway, thanks for your encouragement, brothers and sisters!

It's tough sh*te to stay completely uninfluenced'cause if one thinks that they sound original/unique are always gonna sound like somebody maybe more like some of the obscure bands. Everytime I play somethin'a bit trippier end up soundin'pretty much like SONIC YOUTH. Maybe it'll be easier to have a more original sound and strummin'pattern than anythin'else for most music has been invented sayin'that, introducin'elements that weren't used before may create a brand new trend. Good luck with all that my pal!

i think when you make anything there will always be someone out there
to try and put a label on it. but it's not about what they think. i'll
stay true to me and disregard what anyone thinks. i don't know... i
just feel that i'm destined to say something in this world.

It will also be a matter of takin'onboard other people's criticism and suggestions, which if one can take those two smoothly, the whole process of gettin'better and bein'appreciated will come along in no time. Hence havin'far too much ego won't do anybody's any good, believe you me,but learnin'from others can turn a novice into a brilliant player one day!!!!!!!!!!!!In addition to all of this it is vital not givin'up one's ideas for the mere sole commercial purposes, basically one must do what they really wanna do regardless!!!!!!!!!!!They're gonna kill me off now.......ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'll never sell out. and i know a lot people say that but i know i
wont. i'm a very spiritual person and don't believe in the importance
of money or any physical things.
but even prog rock doesn't seem so straight from the heart these days.
almost like people are afraid to COMPLETELY drop all fears and make
purely what is from the heart. some people can do it today though. but
not as many people are doing it as the 1970s and 1960s.
