Some of you might know the website cdbaby.com ... in the next few weeks I'll post some recommendations of albums which are available on that website.
NOTE: Instead of most other online cd shops cdbaby.com offers extensive high quality samples ... simply click the "play all files" button in the left sidebar of the album pages ... that's one of the reasons why I chose to create a thread about this particular shop: You can listen to my recommendations. The other reason is that cdbaby.com is a really fair company in regard to the artists ... at least I have heard nothing but good things about them. ![]() You can also have a look at a dynamic chart of cdbaby albums on my website: http://progtology.com/home/charts.xhtml?chart.source=cdbaby (currently that list is not very long, but it will grow and then the filter options of the chart will come in handy) Let me begin with this album: Beyond Twilight - For the Love of Art and the Making (2006) Brilliant "prog metal for people who don't like prog metal". ![]() Edited by MikeEnRegalia - May 15 2007 at 09:30 |

Another one:
Panzerballett - Panzerballett (2006) also quite heavy, but rooted more in the Fusion domain. ![]() Edited by MikeEnRegalia - May 16 2007 at 11:13 |

^ Thanks!
![]() Now for some retro prog: Anglagard - Hybris (1992) Anglagard - Epilog (1994, re-released 2003) Hybris seems to be permanently out of stock - but you can still listen to the samples. ![]() Edited by MikeEnRegalia - May 16 2007 at 11:12 |

Here's a really interesting rock/fusion album:
Bryan Beller - View (2003) For those who don't know Bryan Beller: He's best known as the bassist of Beer for Dolphins and the Mike Keneally Band. ![]() Edited by MikeEnRegalia - May 16 2007 at 11:12 |

cdbaby is amazing. You can get somewhat well-known bands, as well as the most obscure stuff possible.
My roommate recorded an album in his apartment studio last summer, and it is available at cdbaby. http://cdbaby.com/cd/adamlaw Not entirely prog, but check it out if you like Satriani-style guitar stuff. |

^ Listening to it now ... sounds very nice, really much like Satriani. A bit like Engines of Creation, only calmer.

Well, speaking of bands on CD Baby who sound like Porcupine Tree and Radiohead, I'd check out Ambo. One of the two guys in the group composed the soundtrack to the computer games Myst and Riven. Also has a slight country coloration to it.

Just bought the following from CDBaby:
Afenginn - Retrograd Afenginn - Akrobakkus Invert - Invert Invert - Between the Seconds Invert - The Strange Parade Not cheap, but not expensive. Oh another album you can get from there is: Astrid Proll - Astrid Proll (but I got my copy direct from Noisex Records). I also like the fact I can use PayPal on there, it saves all the hassle with debit cards. Edited by Geck0 - June 03 2007 at 20:11 |

Haha, this thread's gonna make me go broke. I don't know whether to
![]() ![]() I recently found out about this fine website, my first order of 5 CDs came about a week ago. Here's some stuff to check out: Skywhale - World at Mind's End (remastered in 2006) http://cdbaby.com/cd/skywhale I can't get over how good this album is. Loving every one of the tracks a lot. Their description of "eclectic, soaring, melodic, progressive, jazz rock fusion" works well. Unfortunately the samples don't do it much justice, but still definitely worth a try. Deluge Grander - August in the Urals (2006) http://cdbaby.com/cd/delugegrander Fine album from members of the fusion band Cerebus Effect (whose three releases you can also get from CDbaby). Fusion-esque symphonic rock. Check out the reviews here. Echolyn - As the World (1995, 2005 release) http://cdbaby.com/cd/echolyn8 Great album from Gentle Giant inspired symphonic prog group Echolyn. Check out their other albums on CDbaby especially Suffocating the Bloom (which I've yet to hear myself) and Mei. Black Bonzo - Lady of the Light (2004) http://cdbaby.com/cd/blackbonzo Nice hard rocking retro-prog. I've been told it is similar to Heep, though I've yet to hear a Heep song so I couldn't verify that. I've been listening to it this week and I quite like it. I'll be making another order of 5 soon. Certainly I'll be getting the Astrid Proll album, if Chamberry and Geck0 recommend it then I'm sure it'll be good. I'll also be trying to complete my Echolyn collection as well as checking out the recommendations here now. Thanks for the thread, Mike. |

Nice one, Speesh! It's not quite a 5/5, but it's at least a 4, almost 4.5 for me, so I hope that doesn't put you off!
Astrid Proll will just get better I believe. I'm greatly looking forward to their next album. |
