Today's addition is the next item in a series of classic (but lesser known) Prog albums I planned to add a while ago but somehow never got to it. As the saying goes, better late than never:

AKKERMAN, JAN ~ JAN AKKERMAN
WEA 242360 (Barcode: 022924236020) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1976 Released: 2000
5th album by the eclectic Dutch guitar genius Jan Akkerman recorded at the same sessions that produced the album Eli, but using a set of different players. This was Akkerman's first step into the world of Fusion, which would be his main area of activity for the next few years. He invited the phenomenal German keyboards player Joachim Kühn (a friendship and cooperation that was to last for many years), the Italian drummer Bruno Castelucci and percussionist Neppie Noya - all three were very active on the European Fusion scene - to take part in the recording and the result was a mixture of instrumental Prog and Fusion with brilliant soloing all over. Akkerman wrote all the music, which includes some of his best fine crafted melodies. The album also served as a basis for creation of the Jan Akkerman Band, which performed all across Europe and was later recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival (his next release). Essential for Akkerman and Focus fans.

CURVED AIR ~ PHANTASMAGORIA
WARNER BROS. 26194 (Barcode: 075992619424) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1972 Released: 2000
3rd album by the legendary UK Prog band Curved Air and unfortunately the final one by the original incarnation of the band, which included the founding members Darryl Way on violin, Francis Monkman on keyboards, Mike Wedgwood on bass, Florian Pilkington-Miksa on drums and of course the divine Sonja Kristina as the lead vocalist. Additional guest musicians are also present, playing mostly brass and percussion instruments. Although the two previous albums (Airconditioning and Second Album) are both masterpieces, this one surpasses them both and is considered the strongest of the three. Way and Monkman (as usual) composed the music and it includes some truly visionary effects, like tape loops of Sonja's voice and inventive use of synthesizers. Definitely a classic of the genre and one can certainly say that they went with a bang! Future incarnations of the band would be nowhere near the original even though the band tried to re-form several times.

Today's addition is the first of two new Israeli releases, which prove again that Israel is slowly becoming an important source of great contemporary Prog music:

REALEAF ~ POSSIBLY NOT
PRIVATE EDITION ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
1st album by a new Israeli Prog group Realleaf and an incredibly strong and surprising debut. All four members of the group: Yuval Goren (vocals and guitars), Omri Azaria (synthesizers), Shay Bashan (bass) and Gal Hochberg (drums) play several instruments and the music and lyrics is credited to all band members. Although influenced by many classic Prog acts, their music is very unique and well developed. The vocal parts (sung in English) are scarce and most of the long tracks are instrumental with an emphasis on the synthesizer sounds, which ornament the music with very interesting electronic sounds resembling (but not imitating) the Space Rock of Hawkwind and early Gong. The sound is intentionally retro, which creates an atmosphere of a 1970s recording, something the Israeli Prog seems to specializing in. The bass player does a splendid job (especially on the fretless bass), gluing the music together and filling the empty spaces. The drummer provides just the right amount of drive to push the music forward, without being bombastic. All together a formidable addition to the ever growing Israeli Prog legacy and definitely something the local scene can be proud of. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Today's addition is the second of two new Israeli releases, which prove again that Israel is slowly becoming an important source of great contemporary Prog music:

ROCKFOUR ~ MEMORIES OF THE NEVER HAPPENED
ANOVA 002 (Barcode: 7290011799021) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2005 - 2006 Released: 2007
Israeli group Rockfour has been the dominating force on the local scene since the early-1990s. Although basically an Alternative Rock outfit, they have changed styles and genres with every one of their albums released over the years, moving between Psychedelica, Prog, Classic Rock, Retro and even Avant-Garde. The sound of the group is completely unique and all their albums sound as if a British band recorded them in the late 1960s (nobody hearing their stuff would ever guess these are Israeli musicians recording in the 1990s or 2000s). Although the band performs and records predominantly their own music, they have often included in their shows (and sometimes recorded) their interpretations of classic 1960s material by their favorite groups like Love, Zombies and especially Pink Floyd (see Side Note). This album presents the three core members of the band: Baruch Ben Izhak (lead vocals and guitars), Marc Lazare (bass) and Issar Tennenbaum (drums) with Yaki Gani (keyboards) and some guest musicians performing a set of new songs sung in English (they have been using English lyrics for several years now), recorded partly in the US and partly in Tel Aviv. The result is an outstanding album sounding like a lost treasure from the 1970s, full of beautiful songs and excellent instrumental work. It is quite certain that this album will achieve the same international acclaim as the last few Rockfour albums, which have been praised by top music critics like Ritchie Utenberger and others. Absolutely deserving wider recognition, I hope this album will open new gates all over the world for this great group.
Side Note: Rockfour have always had a soft spot for early Pink Floyd and they recently won the Arnold Lane Contest organized by David Gilmore, in which bands from all over the world submitted their versions of the Syd Barrett's song (see Gilmore's web site for details).

PENTANGLE ~ ONE MORE ROAD / LIVE 1994
HUX 089 (Barcode: 682970000893) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1993 - 1994 Released: 2007
Pentangle, the finest of the many UK Folk-Rock bands, went through two distinct life cycles. The original band, which was active between 1968 and 1972, left us a wonderful legacy of 6 splendid album released originally on the legendary UK folk oriented Transatlantic label and reissued (and expanded) on CD by Castle. That period was also documented by the release of the original band's BBC recordings on the Hux label in 2004 (The Lost Broadcasts 1968-1972). In 1984 two of Pentangle's founding members singer Jacqui McShee and guitarist John Renbourn reformed the band again and kept it active till 1994. This second incarnation of the band started off with the five original members but later on went through many personnel changes until the final version of the band crystallized around 1989 and kept together till 1994. This last version of the band included Jacqui, John and three other Folk-Rock veterans: Nigel Portman-Smith (bass, piano and vocals - ex Magna Carta), Gerry Conway (drums - ex Fotheringay and Jethro Tull) and Pete Kirtley (guitar - ex Alan Price Set, Griffin, Riff Raff and many other bands). The second Pentangle recorded also 6 albums, three of which were recorded by the last lineup above. Alas these albums are almost completely neglected and have been out of print for many years. This beautiful album brings us splendidly remastered versions of the last two Pentangle albums: One More Road - the last studio album and Live 1994 - their swan song. There is hardly any need to recommend these masterpieces to a serious Folk-Rock fan. Let's just be grateful this material is available again and enjoy every minute of it to the fullest. Brilliant!

INCREDIBLE STRING BAND ~ ACROSS THE AIRWAVES
HUX 087 (Barcode: 682970000879) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock
Recorded: 1969 - 1974 Released: 2007
Incredible String Band was one of the most bizarre phenomena on the UK Folk-Rock scene. Formed in 1966 by two folkies Mike Heron and Robin Williamson the band carried on until 1974 with ever changing lineups and kept releasing albums and building up a cult status. They were quite unique in their approach to music, expanding the basic folk roots (both UK and US) into Psychedelic and World Music areas as well as Brechtian cabaret. They always preferred experimentation and hippie attitude to music perfection. The band often included members with very limited musical abilities (girlfriends, roadies and dancers) with off-key singing and seemingly sloppy musical approach, but thanks to the extraordinary songwriting by Heron and Williamson it all worked out magically. One might put the ISB in the same camp with other weird Folk-Rock based ensembles like Third Ear Band, Tyrannosaurus Rex or Comus. This album is of immense importance as it collects for the first time recordings of the ISB BBC sessions recorded between 1969 and 1974. As with all other matters, ISB approach to their BBC appearances was quite different from most bands. They used the sessions to perform new material, which was mostly not included on any of their albums, therefore making most of the music included here available for the first time. For all ISB fans this is quite a revelation of course and they'll surely be delighted to put their hands on this album. For people not familiar with ISB output, this is a wonderful opportunity to try them out. Recommended.

WAKEMAN, RICK ~ LIVE AT THE BBC
HUX 085 (Barcode: 682970000855) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1976 Released: 2007
By the time the two concerts featuring Rick Wakeman and his English Rock Ensemble were recorded, the young keyboards wizard had already behind him a list of achievements that few others manage to accomplish in a lifetime. Wakeman played on endless studio sessions for the top UK acts, was a members in two seminal Prog bands Strawbs and Yes and composed and recorded a series of musical epics of grand proportions: The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table, White Rock (the soundtrack for the Winter Olympic Games) and most recently his first album with his English Rock Ensemble: No Earthly Connection. The two concerts recorded for the BBC were a part of Wakeman's promotion tour of the last album. With Wakeman's enormous array of keyboards and the six-piece English Rock Orchestra (Ashley Holt - vocals, Roger Newell - bass, John Dunsterville - guitar, Tony Fernandez - drums, Reg Brooks - trombone and Martin Shields - trumpet) produced a truly awesome, powerful orchestral sound, which suited Wakeman's dramatic compositions perfectly. The music includes excerpts from all the Wakeman's solo albums mentioned above, as well as material from the last album. Although the two concerts include some parallel material, each performance is quite unique and therefore none of it is redundant. This is undoubtedly Wakeman's finest hour ever and considering the great sound quality of these recordings perhaps the best live album he ever made. Quite honestly this album is more or less the essence of Wakeman's output and except for fanatic Wakeman fans is quite sufficient as his spot in one's music collection. Definitely most wholeheartedly recommended!
Side Note: Unfortunately things went pretty downhill for Wakeman from that point on. Although he is to this very day one of Rock's most prolific composers, his totally unrestrained policy on releasing his albums, which resulted in a monstrous (I stopped counting a long time ago but they must be well over 200) amount of albums, which totally destroyed his credibility. Sure there is a lot of great music in those albums, but none of it was innovative or neoteric enough to make any difference. Overproducing can be disastrous and unfortunately Wakeman is a living proof of that.

NUCLEUS ~ HEMISPHERES
HUX 078 (Barcode: 682970000787) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2006
Led by trumpeter / composer Ian Carr, Nucleus were not only the most important UK Jazz-Rock ensemble but in fact one of world's pioneers of the genre. Carr created Nucleus to take the next step in his already well-established Jazz career. During the 1960s Carr was a co leader of the Don Rendell / Ian Carr Quintet, one of the best UK modern Jazz ensembles. However by the end of the 1960s Carr felt a need to change his direction and move into the Rock influenced Jazz-Rock Fusion. Following the steps of US pioneers of the genre like Gary Burton and Charles Lloyd and UK ensembles like the Graham Bond Organization, Carr put together a group of the best players on the UK scene to create Nucleus. The band was an instant success and a revelation, soon to be recognized as the leading force of the newborn genre. The first incarnation of the group included (in addition to Ian Carr who played trumpet and flugelhorn) Karl Jenkins on electric piano and oboe, Brian Smith on tenor and soprano saxophones, Chris Spedding on guitar, Jeff Clyne on bass and John Marshall on drums. Between 1970 and 1971 this lineup recorded three fabulous albums: Elastic Rock, We`ll Talk About It Later and Solar Plexus, which belong to the absolute classics of the genre. This album includes two live performances of this incarnation of Nucleus, recorded almost a year apart. The sound quality is truly amazing and the performances are stellar. Most of the material is taken from the a.m. three albums, but previously never released tunes are also included, which makes this album even more important. This is a prime example of European Jazz-Rock at its best, alive and kicking. Absolutely essential listening!

MATCHING MOLE ~ ON THE RADIO
HUX 083 (Barcode: 682970000831) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene
Recorded: 1972 Released: 2006
Although Matching Mole existed for barely a year, they are still considered one of the most important Canterbury scene bands and their musical legacy achieved legendary status over the years. Formed in late 1971 by Robert Wyatt, who left Soft Machine dissatisfied with the Free Jazz phase the band he founded was going through at the time, this new band was much closer stylistically to the Soft Machine Jazz-Rock period, which recorded Third. The original lineup included (apart from Wyatt) the ex-Caravan keyboards wizard Dave Sinclair, bassist Bill McCormick and guitarist Phil Miller. Pianist Dave MacRae joined later, playing alongside Sinclair and when Sinclair left he stayed on as the resident keyboards player. The band recorded two excellent albums: the self-titled debut Matching Mole and Little Red Record. Following the band's split by the end of 1972, Wyatt started his solo career and Sinclair and Miller went on to form Hatfield And The North and National Health, the two most significant Canterbury bands ever. The Cuneiform label released two albums with live Matching Mole material in the 2000s (Smoke Signals and March), but their BBC sessions reminded unreleased until now. This is the first time that the BBC sessions, recorded between January and April of 1972, can be heard by the numerous fans of the band, myself included. Both the quintet and the later quartet versions of the band can be heard. The music is of course phenomenal and needs no further recommendation, something any Canterbury fan around the globe will surely agree with.

SOFT MOUNTAIN ~ SOFT MOUNTAIN
HUX 084 (Barcode: 682970000848) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene
Recorded: 2003 Released: 2007
Ex-Soft Machine members Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean and John Marshall continued during the 2000s to keep the SM flame alive by leading two SM-related groups: Soft Machine Legacy (with guitarist John Etheridge) and Soft Works (with guitarist Allan Holdsworth). During the 2003 Soft Works Japanese tour Hopper and Dean contacted two Japanese Master musicians: keyboards player Hoppy Kamiyama (Gong Family) and drummer Yoshida Tatsuya (Acid Mothers Temple) to create an ad hoc quartet called Soft Mountain. The quartet engaged in a one-day recording session, playing completely improvised music, the result of which is presented on this album. The brilliant music is a mixture of SM related free Jazz-Rock and more Jazz oriented free blowing improvisations. The performances are highly spirited and the virtuosity of the participants is plainly evident. Every SM fan should have a field day with this wonderful addition to the extensive legacy of the group's music.

Today's addition is the most important (for me) addition since the Jazzis Web Shop started. As you can see this is a NEW JAZZIS RECORDS RELEASE! I stopped releasing new CDs 12 years ago and now I decided it's time to renew activity on this front. It is not surprising that the new release is by Harold Rubin - my favorite Israeli Jazz musician. The new Jazzis releases will be packaged in an exquisite and prestigious beautiful mini-sleeve packaging, as suited for a high quality product. I hope everybody will enjoy this one:

I have met Harold Rubin twenty years ago, when he approached me with a proposition to release the debut Zaviot album on my newly established Jazzis Records label. This opened a friendship and a cooperation with lasts since then. I learned to appreciate Harold's music and love it dearly, not only as a producer of many of his albums but also as an avid Jazz listener, and his constantly changing music and outstanding talent have been a constant source of joy and inspiration. Harold is such an astounding musician and such a unique voice that his creation stands out like a torch in a dark night. Totally disregarding trends and fashions, genres and pre-conceptions he is able to bring into being a completely original music of staggering beauty and deeply moving emotion. Although it might sound inappropriate, in my opinion Harold is one of the most important Jazz musicians worldwide in the last two decades. As someone who has access to almost every Jazz album released anywhere on this planet I'm completely convinced that he has very few peers of matching quality and surely none whatsoever on his instrument - the clarinet. This album documents the music recorded by Harold with his trio (Shmil Frankel - bass and Ram Gabay - drums), which includes (as usual) young Israeli players. The trio is Harold's preferable platform, as it allows on one hand plenty of interplay and co-creation and on the other leaves plenty of space for individual statements. Most of the music was written by Harold, who also uses his voice (and sometimes lyrics) to express his emotions as an alternative instrument. Of course Harold is also a great graphic artists so I was only glad to use his drawing of the trio members on the front cover of the sleeve. To those, who are familiar with Harold's music, this will be one more magnificent addition to his outstanding legacy. Those, who are unfamiliar with his music, have now a new chance to get to know something they have been missing in their lives. Any Jazz fan around the world, who has never heard a Harold Rubin album, is simply ignorant of the most important Jazz voice on this planet.
