Topic: Gavin Harrison Wins Best Prog Drummer Poll Posted: May 20 2007 at 18:03 |
A little birdy informs me that Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison has won the "Best Prog Rock Drummer" award in the prestigious Modern Drummer awards:
Anyone who has heard Gavin's contribution to Porcupine Tree's last albums will know what a colossal talent Gavin is. One of my favourite Gavin moments is on the DVD "Arriving Somwhere" his performance on Hatesong is stunning..

I was impressed with his performance last year when I saw him for the first time in D.C.
I get to see him perform again in 2 days! He's a great drummer and deserving of the award.

Thats great for him, but I don't think Modern Drummer could really be called prestigious.

Who else was nominated though, that's what I want to know!
I prefer the late Pip Pyle, as well as Tatsuya Yoshida and John Marshall.

all you need to know is that WHOEVER else was nominated Gavin won.
Remember that PT are hardly a major band in the US (#63 in US chart best position) so for Gavin to win anything is major recognition.

Oh I know that, I'm not doubting his skills at all, I was just curious as to who else was nominated? Does it show the top 10?
I'm curious, that's all.

yes, we know......
Seriously I was told that he won, that's all, but in reality I cant verify it apart from trusting the source 100%..
I would imagine he beat the usual suspects; Portnoy, whoever plays for TMV, the guy from Tool, maybe even Peart, Bruford, Moerlein,Vander.....who knows?

BTW, Modern Drummer is the oldest Drum Magazine in existence, so therefore its awards are prestigious...

No doubt also contributed to by his work on Jakko Jakszyk's 'The Bruised Romantic Glee Club', a 2CD release from late last year/ early this year, the contributors to which reads like a current 'Who's Who' in prog. If you like GH's playing, look into this one folks.

That's a great album, mrgd. I have a signed copy by Jakko himself! I must give it some more listens actually.

I agree GeckO, like most good prog albums , it's a grower and not just the first disc of mainly Jakko's originals. The second disc of those reworked Prog obscurities also really grows imo.

October 8 at the State Theatre???
That was my first time seeing them, and he absolutely blew me away. Glad to see him getting some more recognition.
